TRACIE, I was born in Butler abt 12 miles east of Fairfield 1934. Went to Fairfield School from first through fourth grade. I was named Carlene Killough, Moved to Galveston with my mother after her oldest brother Palham, wife Johnnie Mae (JENKINS) FRANKLIN, children, Billie Jean, Bonnie Joyce, Palham Ray, Jimmy Dale came here the early part of WW 2. I worshiped Aunt Johnnie and moving here, told people I was named after her and my name was Johnnye. I did not have my name legally changed to Johnnye Carlene untill early or mid 1980s. I was surprised when I began researching to see it in the Fairfield Court House. If you are with in driving distance of Fairfield, the Museum has a large copy of the original Freestone County Map. Not long before Mrs. Childs was turning it over to Molly, I purchased two, one for my self and one was given to the Museum. They had not found a place for it when I was there a year or so ago. You can also go to the Texas State land office in Austin on the web to get info about what they have, the records, etc. The cost of the maps were under $20.00 when I last purchased one. I consider them well worth having if you have family and relatives that are original land owners. If you have not visited the Museum, you may be missing out on a lot of history, that you may not be aware of. In a frame on the West wall, first floor there was a picture in a newspaper article on my grandmothers great uncle (Capt. W. B. Waldron) published in the Houston paper in 1934. Out of ten or twelve Waldron children he and my grand mother's grandmother were the only two to survive into their mid nineties. Houston and Galveston papers carried news from all over the state. The Unisersity of Houston Clearlake has many of the old newspapers on mirco film. I don't know if they loan them on interlibrary loan. Do you ever just type in GOOGLE on your web address, then when it says search, type in what you are looking for?? I use it for newspapers, health articles I am not even close to learning the free search engines that you can find almost anything in any state. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR RESEARCHING AND I HOPE THAT EVERYONE USES THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH WILL KNOW THE THRILL OF WALKING SOME OF THE TRAILS, ON SOME OF THE LAND OF THEIR ANCESTORS, THE JOY AND KINSHIP THEY FEEL ON MEETING DISTANT COUSINS, THEY DIDN'T YET KNOW. Hi Mike, Where can I obtain such a map of Freestone county showing the abstracts? Are they usually available in larger libraries such as Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas? Or do you purchase them? If so, where would I buy one? Thanks for your help! Look at a map of Freestone County showing the abstracts. Those are names of the grantees. I have a Republic of Texasland grant signed by Mirabeau B. Lamar to Tobias Dubronner. On the map you'll find the T. Dubronner abstract in the Stewards Mill area. Mike
I found a Meador family living near Currie, Navarro Co. That would have been the family of Thomas William Meador (1827-1898.) He is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Eureka, Navarro Co., TX. Mike
I would like to learn the identities of land grant recipients (individuals, as opposed to institutional grantees) who acquired land in the Freestone County area in the early days. This would include any land grant programs for individuals during the Republic of Texas period and subsequently the State of Texas years during the later 1800's. Can anyone direct me to existing reference materials that are specific to Freestone and its predecessor area of Limestone? Tracie

To anyone who can help, I have an ancestor Jonathon Augustus Reed who went by J.A. Reed. He lived in Freestone County from sometime in ca 1868 through 1879. Sometime in the year 1879, according to family he died. In 1870, he married Joanah Metcalf and by mid 1880 she was remarried to Francis W. Reynolds and living in Wise County. I am looking for anyone who may know what happened to J.A. Reed in 1879 and where he might be buried. J.A. Reed had a brother in law Samuel H.
