    3. Posted on: Freestone County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Freestone/475 Surname: MANNING ------------------------- Mr. Hullum, I've been reading your posts about Confederate Soldiers of Freestone County. I'm interested in finding out more about the government providing a marker for these soldiers. My great grandfather, Reuben Manning, was a soldier in the Civil War. I have a copy of his widow's application for a pension. He is buried in Cotton Gin Cemetery, just outside of Teague. However, his family never placed any kind of head stone at his grave or his wife's. I don't know why; probably finding the money was the problem. Would he qualify for some kind of military marker? I have more information about his service somewhere in all of this "mess" I have in boxes. If he is eligible, I can look through those papers and find out when and where he served. Thank you for any information. Paula

I never heard him speak ill of any one, neither did I ever hear any man, woman or child speak ill of Joe KELLEY. The great crowd that stood with uncovered heads of his grave was mute evidence that his passing brought sorrow to many. He was converted when about 18 years of age and united with the Methodist Church and he lived and died in that faith which takes hold on eternity, that sees beyond a cloudless sphere and a beautiful home prepared for the children of god. Sweet be the rest of our friend unbroken his peace and everlasting his joy in the undimed light of a happier world than this and bye and bye in the fullness of time may he again meet those he loved while here.

Fairfield Recorder, Fairfield Texas Friday, May 15, 1925 IN MEMORY OF F. R. HUCKABY Let us cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees. Stonewall JACKSON F. R. HUCKABY was born July 10, 1847 near Camden Alabama and was the son of J. F. and Elizabeth RIDDLE HUCKABY. His fathers family and a number of other families came to Texas in 1849 and settled some near Butler and some near Fairfield, Freestone County. Mr. HUCKABY’s family, near the latter place. As a young man, Mr. HUCKABY attended school at the young mens school at Fairfield and later at Old Woodland College. After the war, about 1869, his father moved to Fairfield to what is now known as the Old Huckaby Home. He was married Jan. 30, 1875 to Miss Willie STRAIN, daughter of Dr. W. D. STRAIN of Fairfield. In about 1879 they moved five miles east of Fairfield. To this union were born seven children, Two girls and five boys. Three boys died in infancy. Bennie, now Mrs. J. A. MCDONALD, Lizzie, now Mrs. Ples LAKE of Greenville, Fuller and Norwood. Norwood died Oct. 24, 1923. For thirty years the family circle remained unbroken and on Dec. 18, 1908 his wife died. In Oct. 1919 Mr. HUCKABY came to Fairfield and made his home with his daughter Mrs. J. A. MCDONALD at which place he lived till his death, Feb. 14, 1925. Mr. HUCKABY was a Royal Arch Mason, having joined the lodge at the age of 21, and at the time of his death he had been a member of this lodge longer than any other peron living. Probably no man ever lived in Freestone County who had more warm friends than Uncle Frank. He was a useful, honarble upright citizen. Our County has suffered in irreparable loss in his death. A man of fine sence and judement, his cancel in advise will be missed beyond measure. He was a great deer and fox hunter. While on the farm he always had a pack of fine hounds. The writer has enjoyed the hospitality of his home where had a wonderful way of making one feel so welcome. He has also been deer hunting with him, has ridden all night fox hunting with him, but the cheif has passed on. The hunting and fishing ground show no him no more. Peace to his ashes, dreamless and sweetly is asleep. Across his pathway he share his share of lifes shadow had fallen, but brave and fearless every fresh was his faith, every bright was his hope, hopeful and cheerful at all times. He was especially loved by all the young men and of his generous heart is forever stealed the love and sunshine that he scattered through life will abide always in the hearts of his friends. He has been called to that place beyond the stars we are told that there is a land fairer than day, a land where disappointment is unknown, a land where shadows never fall. W. M. C.
