    3. Posted on: Freestone County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/FreestoneObits/10225 Surname: McNeill, Drumwriight ------------------------- No connection to me. The Teague Chronicle June 28, 1918 Death of Mrs. McNeill Mrs. M.J. McNeill, mother of Mrs. W.R.T. Drumwright, died at 11:00 am last Thurs. at the home of the later. Mrs. McNeill had long made her home with Mr. & Mrs. Drumwright here. About 8 months ago she fell and broke a limb and since that time had been confined to her bed. She was in her 81st year and this accident hastened the end. The remains were laid to rest Fri. at the Winkler cemetery where lies the remains of her husband. Joe.T. Drumwright and family of Wortham and Ernest McNeill of Chickasaw. Okla. were among relatives that attended the funeral. July 5, 1918 In memory of Mrs. M.J. McNeill Gentle toiler her work well done, beautiful soul to glory gone, beautiful life with her crown now won, God giveth her rest. Mrs. McNeill, a beloved mother in Israel was called to her heavenly home June 20, 1918. She was born in Wilcox Co. Ala. March 26, 1838, was married to D.J. McNeill and moved to Texas many years ago. At the time of her death she was making her home with her only daughter, Mrs. W.R.T. Drumwright of this city. After an illness of nearly eight months she passed away as sweetly as a sleeping child. For the first few months of her illness she endured great suffering with the patience and fortitude that surpassed human understanding but her last weeks were filled with painless, and weariness of waiting. Devotion of her family, the tenderness and solicitude brought her every comfort that was beautiful to see. No mother could ever receive more tender care. Indeed a great woman, one of God’s best gifts to this world has quietly gone away. Like Dorcas her monument is in what she did while she lived. She had a simple beautiful faith in God and in that faith she found her strength to live and in that faith she died. Vivid but the outlines of her life but they embrace years of wonderful service for her home, friends, community and her master in so many different avenues, the good and many beneficent results of which only eternity can reveal. A host of friends can likewise testify to the work of her character, to the stability of her purpose, capability of her service and the blessings and sweetness of her friendship. We have all been richly blessed by her presence among us and her memories forever shine to lighten the dark places and encourage us to give to the bearer of the best that is within us. A short but impressive funeral service was conducted in the home by Rev. Francis the Baptist pastor. A large circle of friends and many floral offerings gave testimony of the esteem and devotion in which she was held by the people of Teague. Her tired body was took to remain at rest in a cemetery in Winkler beside her husband who preceded her 13 years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss five children: J.H. McNeill of Altus, Ok., J. E. McNeill of Chickasaw, Ok., W.E. McNeill of Quitman, Texas, R.H. McNeill of Wichita Falls, and her daughter, Mrs. Drumwright of Teague. Besides 36 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren to whom we extend our sincerest, deepest sympath(sic) in their bereavement.

Church south when a young lady, and lived up to the tenets of that church thru life and was ever ready to do unto others as she would have them do unto her. As a friend none were truer, as a neighbor none were kinde. Mrs. WATSON was affable and social in disposition, engaging and interesting in conversation and her visits were always enjoyed by her friends and neighbors. Her last sickness was lingering and her suffering intense but she bore them with that christian fortitude characteristic of him who on the cross quietly said, It is finished. Our good neighbor is gone from us, but she, her kindness, her service to others, her pleasant conversation and grand womanhood will be remembered. Weave a garland of memories, memories intwined with flowers rare. Place it at our neighbors grave and bid it’s perfume linger there. W. E. D.

    3. Charlotte, I will look and see what I can find the next time I go to the paper office, but there probably won't be much if anything on it. Back then they just didn't write stuff on the colored people. I have found this out in my reading of the Obits. There are several obits for the killing of colored people and they explain what happened but then there isn't anything else said about. Ralph Massey was the owner of the Teague Chronicle, our local newspaper. He died a few years ago, but his wife still owns the paper. Her name is Patricia Massey and can be reached by contacting the Teague Chronicle, Main St. Teague, Tx 75860. There was another Massey family that lived in Dew. Ola Mae Massey was a beautician there for years. She may still be there. I'm not sure of the correct town or zip code, because Dew residents receive their mail from either, Teague 75860, Buffalo 758?? or Fairfield 75840. It could be any one of these towns. I don't know if this helps at all. If I find out anything else, I'll get back with you.

    3. Posted on: Freestone County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/FreestoneObits/10216 Surname: McIlveen, Winters, Childs ------------------------- No connection Fairfield Recorder, Fairfield Texas Friday, August 27, 1926 IN MEMORY OF MRS. BETTY MCILVEEN Today we are here, and three days hence we are layed to rest in the silent city. Today this mortal beem communes with it’s fellow mortals and 24 hours hence it ceases for the soul to pass beyond the veil to the here after. On the last Saturday morning Grandma Betty MCILVEEN was taken seriously sick. Her tired frail body unable to weather the storm of weakness and pain soon gave way and she passed from this life on the lords day at 6:30 o’clock in the evening Aug. 22. On the following afternoon funeral services were conducted by Rev. Herbert MCKISSICK and Rev. I. O. DENT in the First Baptist Church. The body was then borne to her family division of the Cemetery and intered while a multitude of sorrowing and sympathitic friends and relatives attended. Mrs. Betty WINTERS MCILVEEN was born in Lowndes County, Mississippi, Oct. 20, 1851, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. P.W. WINTERS who came to Freestone County in the middle 1850’s. She was united in marriage to Dr. T.S. MCILVEEN on her 24th birthday, Oct. 20, 1875. To this union five sons were born. One of who died in infancy. The other four survive the mother and all live in Fairfield. Of her immediate family, one sister only survives. She is Mrs. Henry CHILDS of Fairfield. It was Betty, the mere child who came to this county in the days of it’s infancy and it was Betty, the girl, who saw it grow from a frontier settlement to a populous county, saw and knew this country in it’s far away bomby days before that great rebellion, The war between the States. All honor to those who lived and wrought well in those former years. Grandma MCILVEEN was aquatinted with toil and deprivations with sorrows, heavy burdens and heartaches. Equally well also, was she aquatinted with fortitude, generosity, neighborlessness, cheerfulness and loving kindness. As a young lady she faced the dessert days of southern reconstruction. As a wife of 35, she saw her husband pass from life, leaving her with four small children to support in a time when earning a living was a serious problem to strong men. With the courage known to mothers of the yester years, she did what she could and brought to maturity four honorable men, under difficulty she bore up with christian fortitude. In times of general misfortune she sought how she might help make a burden light for the neighbors. For years she was a devoted and consecrated member of the Baptist Church. Hers was a beautiful and steadfast faith. In it she lived, thru it she looked beyonrd the grave to her loved ones and friends over there in the glorious mourning of the resurrection and by it she came down to the close of life calmly and unafraid. P.D.B.
