He married Elizabeth Farris (b 13 Sept 1853 d 25 Aug 1930 in West Point) on 21 Dec 1869 in Franklin, Tennessee. Their 12 children are: Joseph Richard, James Edward, Mary Susan, Lucy Maria, Walter, William Madison, Daisie Gertrude, James Addison, Thomas Morgan, Oscar Sitton, Julia Ann and Joseph L. Three children died at a young age and are buried in Old Plum Grove with their father, they were James Edward, Lucy, and Walter.
