Lana, Take a look at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/txsearch.html Usually, you'll get too many results using just a surname, but try "Doe John" with one space and "Doe John" with two spaces and you'll usually get vital records from the sixties on for anywhere in the state.
