    1. Re: [TXFAY] Monument Hill/Dawson and Mier Expeditions
    2. Gina - I have done some research in Fayette Cty. around an ancestor of mine, Thomas Simms, who was lost in the Dawson Massacre. Also, research another ancestor, Elijah Pigott Howland and his wife, Evaline Simms Howland, who resided in Fayette Cty. from 1843 on-. I believe that I have come across the name of your ancestors: Person as living in LaGrange around the years of 1850+. They might have been neighbors of my ancestors! I suggest your look in the 1850 census records for Fayette County and the Probate Records/Deeds in the years 1850+ too. You can find the PR/Deeds at the County Clerks office in LaGrange. The staff there is VERY helpful. Good Luck! Hattie McKinley The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases. - Carl Jung

    3. FYI, an excellent publication on this subject is J. M. Nance's book, Dare-Devils All, Texas Mier Expedition. See also http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/index.html<http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/index.html> for more information. My ancestors were John R. Johnson, Company F, Mier Expedition, Harvey A. Adams, Somervelle Expedition and Capt. Chauncey Johnson, captured by Gen Woll during his invasion of San Antonio in 1842. Both Johnsons were captured and thrown in prison in Mexico. Adams returned to San Antonio. Each survived to tell his incredible story of these times. His mother is Ruby Leola Dean Person. While going through some of her sister's papers after her death (Edna Person Vaden), she had received an invitation from the Fayette County Sesquicentennial Committe to come to the celebration ot recognize the historic and heroic contributions of the Dawson and Mier Expeditions. This is my question. After going through alot of names on the internet, I have not been able to find a Person that was involved with these Expeditions. There is a story in the family that a McDonald side (my grandmothers mother) drew a white bean. How do I find out why she was invited and what was the man's name that she was being invited because of? Please forgive me for bieng long-winded but I cannot find any information. Thanks in advance.
