It's still lacking some furniture, but the Fayette Heritage Museum & Archives remodeling and expansion have been completed. The research space is upstairs in a large beautiful vaulted space and, don't worry, there is a new elevator, too. I have found another 'heir of William Alley'. Thomas Alley who died before the Court divided the Spanish land grant in Fayette county in 1854 leaving no issue. He had land in Jackson County, below Hardy's on the Navidad river. His sister Sarah Chaplin stated in the court documents that she was his sister, and she was also heir of William Alley, their father, and she was giving power of attorney to her son Edward Berthe to handle her interest in the property. William Hill (son of Thomas Hill and Mary Alley) was given power of attorney by his Father, Thomas Hill of St Francois County Missouri on Sept 9 1850, and guardianship of his son John Wallace Hill, who was a minor, to handle their interest in the property. Jane Hill, now wife of Isreal McGahan of in St. Francois County Missouri also was represented by her brother William in 1850 and later by the John Wallace Hill who was a minor in 1850. (No mention was made of Charles Hill the brother from which I am decendent) who lived in Fayette County with wife Martha (Ricer) in 1860. Martha was daughter of Martin Ricer and Julia Ann G. Mercer. Julia's father was Asa Simmons Mercer, brother of Eli Mercer who settled in Wharton County. Heirs of the brother John Alley who lived in St Francois County Missouri included Mary Ann Murphy and Amanda Tyler represented in Court by William Hill and later John Wallace Hill.

Gwin seems like a good candidate for sibling. He was in Monticello, Lawrence Co., MS in 1860 and in Bogue Chitto, Lincoln Co., in 1870. Lawrence Co is next door to Lincoln Co. I don't know about the courthouse in Lawrence Co. but the one in Lincoln Co. burned and I could find no old records there some 12 years ago when I went looking. What is your source for the M. Gwin's marriage to Mrs. Lucinda Medris? Any thing other than the obit? I had a friend check the cemetery records that Sammy Tise did of Lavaca County, He showed that Mary Gwin died in August 1869. The 1870 census of Lincoln Co. MS shows that M Gwin married L ? in Nov 1869. Seems a bit soon. F. L. Wallace according to the same records was married to S. J. in Dec. 1869. The two couples were living in the same house. When I visited with Seba Julia (?) Wallace's grandchildren some years back, they knew nothing. What little I have found has been from old newspapers and such.

Wallace's first wife. In the 1870 census of Lincoln Co. MS there is listed Gwin M 62 M W Farmer b Tenn with L 44, F W Keeping H b Georgia; Madaris, Ann (Ame) 60 F B servant b VA; Wallace, F. L. 21 M W Working RR b NY; S.J. 18, F. W. At home b GA. by 1873 they were in Lavaca Co, when the Wallace's son Edward Haywood died and was buried in Andrews Chapel cemetery. In 1877, Seba Julia Wallace died at the home of her parents and was buried in Andrews Chapel cemetery. It appears that after Gwin died his wife married a Benthal and she died in 1910. In the Weimar Mercury dated 26 Aug 1910 was the following: News was received here Wednesday night of the death of Mrs. Benthal, an aged and honored resident of Schulenburg, and grandmother of Mrs. Gus. Baumgarten of that city and Clifford Wallace of Teague. Mrs. Benthal had been in poor health for some time, and but a few weeks ago her death was momentarily expected. However, her condition improved, and she grew better. She grew worse again this week, and the end came quickly, she dying at 7 o’clock Wednesday night. Mrs. Benthal was formerly a Mrs. Gwinn, her first husband being a U. S. congressman from Mississippi. She was a lady of many excellent qualities of both head and heart, a friend to everybody, one whom to know was to esteem, and her death is deeply and sincerely deplored. The funeral will take place at 9 o’clock Friday morning. Our sincere spmpathy (sic) is extended to the bereaved family. It may be that Medris was the congressman rather than Gwin. At least this gives both of us something more to think about.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mkB.2ACI/339.1 Message Board Post: BERNARDO, TEXAS. Bernardo is at the intersection of Farm Road 949 and Bernardo Road, on the south bank of the San Bernard River twelve miles northeast of Columbus in Colorado County. The earliest settlers were German immigrants who came to Texas about 1845 as colonists of the Adelsvereinqv and were followed by other Germans. They preferred to remain where a good number of Germans had established themselves and where frontier conditions were not as trying as in the Fisher-Miller land grantqv in west central Texas, the area designated for colonization. Bernardo was originally known as Bernardo Prairie because of the local terrain. It was also earlier called Braden; several families by that name were among the early settlers. The community was on the main road from Houston to towns and settlements inland. During the Civil War qv it served as a dumping station for cotton being hauled to Mexico. However, it never became a large settlement but remained a farming and ranching commu! nity with scattered homes and farms. Bernardo had its own post office from 1898 to 1917. As early as 1872 there was a local Catholic school staffed by the Sisters of Divine Providence.qv In 1911 it was merged with the Mentz Catholic school, which was in turn replaced by a public school that later became part of the Columbus Independent School District. In 1986 Bernardo had a general store and a volunteer fire department and was a voting precinct with 187 registered voters. Some descendants of the original settlers still lived in the area, although land was being purchased by people from Houston and surrounding areas. In 1990 the population was 155. Folks, keep in mind there are two Cunningham families in Fayette Co and the two aren't related. One is out of Tennessee, the other, mine, began with an englishman, James Cunningham. I done had this dispute with cousins here...even produced census showing the differneces to no avail. Anywho, James Cunningham 1st married Rebecca Fitzgerald, had 9 kids. He later, at abt. 45 in 1863, married Rebecca's sister's 17 yr. old neice by marriage, the widow Lucinda Jane Bolton Jones. James and Lucinda had 10 kids. I am '2nd family'. I got the email from Gayle about Hosea Hammon(d)(s) and deduce from that you are '1st family'. We have no Cunninghams in the cemetery of that name, they are the 'other' C family in Fayette Co. from Tennessee. James Cunningham came over in 1835 at abt. age 17. He was born 11/5/1818. As my hand allows I will send what I have.
