Yes, I would like copies of the pictures that you have, but in the body of your message is a reference to Rosetta's obit. Since my problem is tracking her roots I would have a high interest in seeing a copy of the obit. I also would be interested in any other info that you may have regarding Rosetta. Given that W.B. was so prominent I have had few problems finding data on his descendants. I have no info about a nephew, Rolins Stewart. I do, however, have the 1850 Fayette Co. I use Denmark as the country of origin since when Thomas Oeding emigrated to Texas, the part of present-day Germany he came from was actually controlled as part of Denmark at that time, although the Oedings were and are of ethnic German extraction. However there are a great many Oedings in Denmark presently, some of whom I met when I traveled to Copenhagen in 1995. I will try and do some digging on Franz Heinrich Oeding to see if I can find anything. Let me know if you ever find anything and I will do the same. Thanks, JT

There was a George Weyand family that lived in the Nassua community near Round Top that draft age children during the time of WWII. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mkB.2ACI/139.4.1 Message Board Post: Hello, Jon. In case you aren't aware of our connection, your grandmother, Elva (daughter of Paul Oeding), and my dad, Earl Grasshoff (son of Ida Oeding Grasshoff) are cousins. I see in my records that you are Rodney's son; I've talked to Rodney several times through the years on different occasions where I've run into him. Regarding Thomas Oeding's ancestors, I was told by your dad and/or someone to whom your dad introduced me (I think she was a Carby, or was it Marsh?) that Thomas' dad was Franz Heinrich Oeding. We know that Thomas was born in Schulau, which I believe is now part of Hamburg, if memory serves me correctly -- I haven't looked at this in quite a while. In fact, I think your dad told me that he visited there years ago. But that's all I have definitively. I have found something interesting, however, although I can't verify a connection. Looking at the applications for naturalization in Fayette County, I found one for "Franz Henry Oeding" in 1894. The document indicates that he emigrated from Hamburg and arrived at New York on Sept. 22, 1888. Could this be the Franz Heinrich Oeding who is Thomas' father? If not, there sure are a lot of coincidences. Furthermore, looking at the Texas Death Index for 1903-1940, there is a listing for a Franz Henry Oeding in Gonzales County on May 30, 1935. I've looked in the Gonzales Daily Inquirer for an obituary about that time, but found nothing. I haven't pursued this Franz Heinrich (Henry) any more, but further investigation might tell us if he is Thomas' father. On the other hand, maybe you or someone else on your side of the family already knows this, and I've just been in the dark on this for many years! I, too, would be interested in knowing more about the Oedings back in Germany. You mentioned Denmark; do you know of anything specific there?

I don't have a map of precinct 6, but I did look for names of people I think lived in the Black Jack Springs area in 1880 and they all came up as precinct 5. The Fayette Heritage Museum & Library might have a precinct map from that time. You can e-mail them at library@fais.net. Black Jack could possibly be Pin Oak or nearby Black Jack Springs, but both of those are west of High Hill. Catholic churches east of High Hill would be Schulenburg and Dubina Catholic churches, and northeast is Ammannsville. South of High Hill is St. John's St. John Catholic Church. However, all of these churches were established later than High Hill and Praha and probably won't have the records you want. An early Catholic church which served the Bluff area north of High Hill from 1856 would be Hostyn's Queen of the Holy Rosary Church. You might want to check deed records for locations if the Kuntschiks owned the farm(s) on which they lived. My late husband's father, Frank Kuntschik, told his children that he was born "at Black Jack, east of High Hill" in 1779. Would this be Black Jack Springs? In the 1880 census the John Kuntschik family is listed in Justice Pct. #6 when Frank is one year old. An older sister attended school that year. In 1881 and 1883 two baby girls were born to the family. Both of them died as iinfants; one in 1884 and one in 1885. They were baptized and buried at the Praha Catholic church and cemetery. At that time the records indicated the family living at Mulberry. Can anyone tell me if Pct. #6 covered that area at that time, or if the family would have moved from Pct. #6 to Mulberry? If this involved a move, where might the older girl have attended school 1879-1880? Also, I did not find baptismal records for any of the other children in church records for High Hill or Praha. Born September 25, 1901 in Schulenburg, Texas to Joseph and Maria Wind, Bettye spent the first sixteen years of her life in this small town attending Catholic schools, doing daily house chores that often times included farm labor as picking cotton, and dreaming of a bigger and better world. Moving to Houston in 1917, she and her sister Peggie immediately found employment as switchboard operators with the telephone company. Soon thereafter she met the love of her life, Calvin Winters Hill, and her dreams began to come true. Bettye and Calvin married January 15, 1921. They were blessed with four children, John, Margaret, Doris and Gloria. The family's bonding years were in Ingleside, Texas where from 1930 to 1945 Calvin was employed by Humble Oil & Refining Company and Bettye was the organizer, chauffeur and doer for! her children and their many activities. She sewed beautifully, making most of the clothes and all of the dance costumes for her three daughters. Bettye was active in the PTA, the Ingleside Women's Club giving book reviews, help open and manage a small ready to wear department in Ingleside's only hardware store and organize and play a solid first base for the Ingleside Boosterettes, the Humble Company's Ladies softball team. Humble Oil closed the Ingleside refinery in 1945 and relocated Bettye and her family to the refinery in Baytown, Texas where she soon became better known as MeeMaw. With a growing family, MeeMaw became even more involved in providing loving direction and inspiration to her children, making a stronger commitment of devotion and service to her church, Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Baytown, and becoming top salesperson in ladies better dresses at the Baytown J.C. Penny store. MeeMaw moved to Houston to live with her sister Peggie Voss shortly after Cal! vin's unexpected death in 1961. The two sisters quickly became insepar able, always on the go, always doing for others and always together. MeeMaw also worked full time in the downtown Sakowitz store as a salesperson in ladies better dresses until retiring in 1972. But she still had things to do and worlds to conquer. At age 72 MeeMaw taught herself to type so she would be more proficient in her new job, along with her sister Peggie, as secretary at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral Church. Retiring again from regular hours in the late 1980's, MeeMaw, with her sister Peggie, continued to remain active in her commitment and devotion to her church and family by attending daily mass, preparing and delivering sandwiches for the less fortunate, and chauffeuring her sister and other lady friends to various church and family activities. In 2000, after a lengthy bout with pneumonia, MeeMaw and her sister moved to the Vosswood Nursing center where they have resided until MeeMaw's peaceful passing. A beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, ! great great grandmother and friend, she will long be remembered by the family and friends for her endearing love and her zest for life. She leaves a legacy of caring and doing for others as a way of life for those who knew her and loved her. In addition to her husband Calvin, MeeMaw was preceded in death by her brother Albert Wind, and in early 1983 by her adored middle daughter, Doris Mae Hargus. MeeMaw is survived by her son John Harvin Hill and daughter Mary Margaret O'Sullivan, both of Baytown; daughter Gloria Elizabeth Hill Gentry and husband Frank of Houston; sisters Gesela (Peggie) Voss and Marian Owen, twelve grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to Bryant Burton Home of Health and caregivers Freda, Lillian, Loretta, Dannette, Tamara , Anuitra, and to the entire staff at the Vosswood Nursing Center. Visitation will ! be from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm Wednesday, March 2 3, 2005 at Earthman Downtown Chapel, 2420 Fannin. The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, 1111 Pierce. Interment will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral Catholic Church, 1111 Pierce St. Published in the Houston Chronicle from 3/23/2005 - 3/24/2005.
