There is a very brave man buried in Fannin County. The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five. Could someone in please photograph the tombstone of William Taylor Smith, buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Ravenna. If you could find some biographical information that would be wonderful! A group of Virginia Military Institue alumni are attempting to locate the graves of all of the cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/new_market_database.htm . Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html. They contacted me about my ancestor who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb. ;-) This is what they know about him: Smith, William Taylor (1867) -Rancher William Taylor Smith, Class of 1867: New Market Cadet; Private, Co. SMITH, W.T. Apr.26,1838-Jun.9,1928 Gone but not forgotten I transcribed the IOOF Cemetery - Ravenna years ago and have a few photographs of it. Since then I got a digital camera and hope to return and photgraph every tombstone. I live south of the DFW metroplex, so I won't be there anytime soon. This cemetery has a special place in my heart so I do want to update any burials, etc. to keep it current. It's just my life has gotten very busy and full in the last few years. Since Mr. Smith died in 1928 an obituary might be found in the microfilmed newspaper of the time. Barbara
