Name: Martha Tatum Social Security #: 563805045 Sex: FEMALE Birth Date: 12 Mar 1865 Birthplace: Texas Death Date: 4 Mar 1971 Death Place: Los Angeles http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txfannin/ Gates Hill Cemetery is the main African American Cemetery for Bonham . It is located at the south end of town right on Hwy 78 south. Originally covering a larger area the oldest section of the cemetery is actually under the hwy , though some graves were moved . Apparently 1952 was a year they plowed some under. The majority of the markers were wooden and all of those long gone. Grass fires , time and wood rotting away left most of the graves unmarked in the older section. The cemetery land was the corner of the Henry Gates farm originally ,naming the slope used for picnics and gatherings During that time the white Cemetery was Inglish Cemetery. Sheriff Gates gave the land for a Cemetery for African American families of Bonham. It is unknown how early it was used but it is my guess it was the 1850' - 60's There are many depressions where graves are-- many of them with iris planted in them. Still I was glad to find so many still readable. There were a half dozen stones that were over on their faces from vandalism. We could not turn the stones over due to how large they were. The addition of over 40 identifications of unmarked graves are death records , funeral home records and newspaper articles.
