When trying to view the census records, it sends you to footnotes, where you have to have a membership...BUT you need to register and for one month some items are free to look at.
In summary: The Family Search PILOT site: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html is being phased out and all databases being moved to the Family Search Beta site: http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/ which is now requiring a log-in in order to access the site. This new site has open access to MOST databases with your free log in and password BUT: Some databases require a Premier Membership in order to view the images. Premier members are : ANY members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints OR Anyone who assists the Family Search project in Indexing records... at least 900 points worth per quarter... through their indexing project. Until just a few hours ago, the Texas Death Certificates had been classified as a Premier Membership database and most of us could not view the certificates any more. That database has now been removed from the restricted list and can be viewed by anyone who registers (for free) to use the site. I'm still getting a LOT of "Image temporarily unavailable" messages but I'm no longer getting the "You must be a premier member" notice. I'm having the best luck (at least for now) at the link below: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html This was my link for accessing the Pilot site before there was a Pilot site and we were testing the search functions of the database. Most of the images still seem to be on this site. It is awfully tempting to stop at 901 points and wait until the next quarter but if everyone did that we'd never get the project completed. I do feel your pain Lynn and there should be some kind of retroactive credit such as... anyone with 10,000 points or more gets the first year free regardless of what quarter they were accumulated... after that 900+ points must be accumulated in the most recent quarter. That would be some way to pay back the early indexers for their contribution up front. They don't have any more access than any other web surfer. I contracted for the site myself from a service based out of Nevada. The Fannin County Genealogy Society pays the annual fee. It is the same company where the TXGenWeb purchases their space but only the site owner (not the sub-sites) can run a database, so I chose to pay for separate space rather than become a free sub-site under the TXGenWeb. Hi Suzie, I know that Fannin website is part of TXGenWeb, USGenWeb, etc. Who provides the storage sites for all of this? I wondered if the LDS has access to all or any of our contributions to the individual county websites. Don
Don't blame you one bit, Susie. My personal objection is that even though I have a total of *35,667 points* for the indexing I've done, I am not a "premium" member since I haven't accumulated 900 of those in the last quarter. Therefore I am unable to access several images which I need to see, regardless of all the hours I've spent indexing. Suzie, for several months I've been experiencing problems seeing some images. Over a period of several weeks, more often than not, I was unable to open up and review the images. I wrote the help desk and got a response, recommending I start transcribing documents. Obviously, a decision has been made that if one wants to review documents, one has to "contribute" by transcribing documents prescribed by LDS. Gosh, its too bad the LDS accept data from their members, including obituaries, that were copied from my database but are unwilling to apply that research as a contributory factor. Obviously, I'm not playing by the "right" rules by contributing data to help individual LDS members with their databases for "sealing" purposes. The Family Search Indexing Project is a commendable effort. The LDS anticipate having ALL of their microfilms digitized by the end of 2010. Getting all those images indexed to make them searchable is expected to take YEARS. Getting people to index records in exchange for access to the images is an excellent plan to get the project growing exponentially. My objection to being required to index is that I already volunteer 7 hours a week to keep the Local Family History Center open... and that seems to count for nothing. I feel as if I have been kicked in the teeth after years of service. Wonder if the center will stay open when I stop showing up. If the state allowed the filming I doubt that they have now backtracked. "Texas has recorded deaths from 1903 to the present, plus about 250 registrations from the 1890s-1939, and nearly 2,000 delayed registrations of death from 1890s-1990, as reported from obituaries and probate records. " Texas death records are closed for 25 years, per the Texas Department of Health. So what the LDS is/was offering are public records, I believe. *** see below Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston, Texas Thank you for contacting FamilySearch concerning image unavailable messages in collections.
