I think you have found the Martha Tatum I was looking for! To me it makes sense that Martha would have moved to Los Angeles to live with her daughter after her husband passed away. I also remember a few years ago speaking to someone via email about the history of Gates Hill cemetery and he/she told me exactly what you described. I really appreciate all of your efforts in solving this mystery for me! You guys are definitely God sent. I have most of the Tatums listed including death certificates and census records. I'm trying to figure out Martha's mother's maiden name and it's been very difficult trying to track. All documents I have only list her married name, but I'm trying to find at least one of her child's death certificates that might possibly show it. That is one of many goals I plan on attaining during this journey. Once again I must say with much appreciation...Thank You! It is located at the south end of town right on Hwy 78 south. Originally covering a larger area the oldest section of the cemetery is actually under the hwy , though some graves were moved . Apparently 1952 was a year they plowed some under. The majority of the markers were wooden and all of those long gone. Grass fires , time and wood rotting away left most of the graves unmarked in the older section. The cemetery land was the corner of the Henry Gates farm originally ,naming the slope used for picnics and gatherings During that time the white Cemetery was Inglish Cemetery. Sheriff Gates gave the land for a Cemetery for African American families of Bonham. It is unknown how early it was used but it is my guess it was the 1850' - 60's There are many depressions where graves are-- many of them with iris planted in them. Still I was glad to find so many still readable. There were a half dozen stones that were over on their faces from vandalism. We could not turn the stones over due to how large they were. The addition of over 40 identifications of unmarked graves are death records , funeral home records and newspaper articles. It never rains.... Hope you get this particular mess straightened out soon. Please see: http://www.txfannin.org/book/souvenir/souvindex.html , page 188, regarding John H Brown and his father. I believe the father's name is Anthony, although in the referenced publication he is referred to only as "Mr. Brown". I am seeking confirmation of his name in order to pursue his ancestry. According to this reference, Mr. Brown was a native of Wake County, North Carolina. He moved to Alabama in 1832 for one year, then to Mississippi for 5 years. His wife was Nancy Herring of Sampson County, North Carolina. She died in 1837, apparently in Mississippi. Shortly after the death of his wife, Mr. Brown then moved to Arkansas for 9 years. In the fall of 1846 he settled in Fannin County, Texas and lived there until his death in 1868. As of 1889 which was the publication date of the referenced book, John H Brown was the only living child of the six children born to his parents. The other siblings were not named. John H Brown was born 16 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina, June 21, 1825. He settled in Fannin County, Texas with his father in 1846. On Aug 18, 1850 he married Elizabeth Davenport of Fannin County, Texas. In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate army. In 1869 he took up residence in Grayson County, Texas. The family included eleven children. Four of the children were deceased as of 1889: George W. Brown John R. Brown David R. Brown and Bird Brown Seven children were then living: Robert J. Brown (my g-grandfather) Cynthia A. Brown Martha L. Brown Nannie R. Brown Lizzie Brown Jessie C. Brown William A. Brown. Buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Fannin County, Texas, near Whitewright, Grayson County, Texas, are my ancestors: JH Brown Jun 21, 1825-Jan 16, 1893 husb of Elizabeth Elizabeth Brown Jan 16, 1832-Feb 25, 1905 wife of JH Brown I invite communications with you about this family. I find no BRIDGES there. I'm currently adding tombstone photos which were just taken to the Indian Creek page and am updating the inventory, so they might turn up. However, Nobility was VERY close to the county lines.., adjoining both Hunt and Grayson Counties... so be sure to look over there too. The more obits I process, the more I am amazed how often they jumped county lines to be buried.
