    2. Betty Colter
    3. Hi everyone, I am trying to find out more about the man Walter Humphreys, also known as W.S. Dane during the time he spent in Tx. . William R Coulter/Colter was an ancestor of my husband. Thanks, Betty AFTER EIGHTEEN YEARS Mr Walter Humphreys Comes clear on an Indictment for Murder that has been Hanging over him. On the first of July, 1875 Walter S. Humpreys, shot and killed William R,. Colter in this County. The killing occurred at Tallokes in the old store still standing there. Mr Humpreys was then a boy of nineteen. He left at once and went to Texas and has been living there ever since. At the Nov, 1875 term of Brooks Superior Court The grand jury of which Fleming B Walker, now dead, was foreman, an indictment was found against him for murder. Mr Humpreys was present at the term of court just passed, pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the commission of a lawful act without due caution and circumspection, paid a fine of $300, and the indictment against him is now a thing of the past. The affidavits of *B.W. Dodd, Jordan Baker, C.D. Edmondson and aleck Curles, all of whom were eye witnesses to the killing, were produced in court and they fully exonerated Mr Humpreys charge of murder. Upon reaching Texas Mr Humpreys took the name of W.S. Dane by which name he has been known ever since. He has been in business for a number of years at Chilton, Falls County, Texas, and has prospered. He married in Texas and now has an interesting family of a wife and five children. He left Thursday for his home at Chilton, and when he reaches there his true name of Walter S. Humpreys will be taken up and the assumed name of Dane will be dropped. On the day he left Mr Humpreys had the FREE PRESS to print a hundred copies of the following which he will use at his Texas Home in explaining why the name he has been known by for the past eighteen years is now changed. In 1875, Walter S Humpreys, known as W. S. Dane, shot and killed one, W. R. Colter of Brooks County, Ga. This case was called at this the May term of Brooks Superior Court and disposed of, the evidence showing that Walter Humpheys acted strictly in self defense. Walter S Humphrey's Mother ands Father are still living in this county. He has four brothers and one sister living here also. His father is a farmer and his brother J.T. S. Humphreys is also a substantial farmer. His brother W.S. Humphreys is a lawyer and is the current State Senator from this district. His Brother's A. S. Humphreys Jr and J.S. Humphreys are physicians practicing in this county. Walter S Humphreys and his family enjoyed the esteem and respect of the citizens of this county. While here Walter Humphreys met a large number of his old friends who gave him a hearty welcome and who would be glad to welcome him move back to his old home county of Brooks.
