Fleming J. served in the Texas Mounted Volunteers during the U.S.-Mexican War from August 2, 1846 to August 17, 1847; and he later served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War in Company B, Texas Cavalry, Hardiman’s Brigade, Smith’s Army. On January 14, 1849 in Limestone County, Texas, Fleming James Barton married Elizabeth Julianne Covington, b December 8, 1827 in Tennessee — a daughter of John H. and Jane (Marlin) Covington, who came to Texas about 1846. Fleming was elected Tax Collector and Assessor when Falls County was first organized. He also taught school in the Fish Creek Community (which was later called “Reagan”), in 1856. The four known children of Barton were: Fleming James and Elizabeth Julianne (Covington) John H. Barton, b January 5,1854 — died young. James Fleming Barton (called “Fish Creek Jim”), b November 11, 1856 near Reagan, d 1917 and buried there in Covington Cemetery — married February 24, 1881 to Anna Chapman. William Walker Barton, b March 6, 1859, d 1924 in Louisiana — married in 1895 to Samantha Ann Wise. They had E. C. Barton, James Barton, Lillard (Barton) Poole, Myran (Barton) Midcoff, Connie Bar-ton, and Samuel Jones Barton, b April 29, 1916 in Reagan, d December 19, 1972 in Shreveport, Louisiana, who married in Caddo Parish, Louisiana to Mildred Hanell. Mary Barton, b April 27, 1861, married first to Joe Frazier, had two sons who died, and married second to David ,lohnson and had Annie Lois Johnson.
