Posted on: Falls County Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/FallsBios/308 Surname: Livingston, McCullough ------------------------- JOE HENRY LIVINGSTON Joseph Henry Livingston was born June 3, 1827. He lived in the Walker Springs area of Clarke County, Alabama. The 1880 Falls County, Texas census stated that he was born in South Carolina, which was a surprise to his descendants. It was assumed that he was born in Alabama. From each census taken during his life it is reported that he was born in South Carolina. He kept a record in his Bible of births, marriages and deaths which has been preserved and helpful in learning more about his lineage. He was married to Mary E. Gill who was born March 11, 1829 in Alabama. Their marriage is recorded in Clarke County, Alabama. A search for Joe Henry as a child has been elusive. We locate him first in the 1850 Lowndes County, Alabama census listed as Henry Livingston living in the home of a Moorer family. Tradition with the Moorer family is that the wife of John L. S. Moorer was a Livingston. Her name is listed as Rixine. We have the will of a Joseph Henry Livingston of Charleston, SC with four children listed. They are Robert Rutherford, Thomas Price, Elizabeth Annis and Erixenxsener Ann R. Livingston. A book, "Livingston and Carlton-Who Are We" published by Carlton gives the lineage of the Livingstons back to Ireland. So we believe that Robert Rutherford is the father of our subject. The listing in the Bible includes Daniel Coleman, age 51, born in South Carolina, wife Sarah, age 45 born in South Carolina, Alien Coleman, age 19, Betty Coleman, age 16, and William, age 9. (The children were born in Alabama.) Since there is a record in Joe Henry's Bible of the death of Sarah J. Coleman, November 3, 1869 age 64 (birth would be March 11, 1805) and Daniel Coleman's death November 21, 1868, age about 70, I believe this would be the mother of Joe Henry and his step-father. All others listed in the Bible are relatives. I don't believe he would list these two names unless they were closely related. In later research, I find descendants of Daniel Coleman and his first wife. Found in the Grove Hill Public Library. "Daniel Coleman died November 21, 1868 and is buried in the Coleman Cemetery in Clarke County, Alabama, and he was born in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. His age at death was about 70." The children of Joe Henry Livingston and Mary E. Gill Livingston are Lawrence L. born July 28, 1855, L.L., born Sept. 25, 1857, Laura Arvy, born May 7, 1861, Joe Henry, Jr., born May 30, 1863 and Lee L, born December 10, 1864. The first three lived to be adults. Joe Henry Livingston enlisted in the 32nd Alabama Infantry April 5, 1862. He was one of thirty-five taken prisoner at Laverne October 7, 1862. However he was paroled the same day at Nashville, Tennessee. He was promoted to 1st Sgt. February 1, 1863. He was captured at Missionary Ridge November 25 and sent to Louisville, Kentucky December 8. From there he was forwarded to Rock Island, Illinois the same day. The next report indicates that he was on the roll of prisoners exchanged February 15, 1865. A card stated: "this man was erroneously reported exchanged." On June 19, 1865 Joe Henry signed the oath of allegiance and was released from prison. The death of Daniel Coleman is made in the bible. Then we learn that Joe Henry witnessed a will January 4, 1867 for his father- in-law, James Gill, Sr. Then his wife, Mary E. Gill Livingston, died May 3, 1872. Sometime after July 1873 when Lawrence was eighteen this family moved to Falls Co., Texas. Lawrence Livingston married Mary Allie McCullough January 8, 1880 in Falls Co. November 31, 1873 Joe Henry, age 46, married a widow, Sarah Elizabeth Moore Mcdonald, age 26 in Falls Co., TX. There were three McDonald children brought into the home. They were Martha, Elisha and Mary. Elizabeth and Joe Henry Livingston has seven children: Ophelia, Thomas Luke, M.O., Moley, Abigail, Susan Clair, and Annie. Annie, Ophelia,Abigail, Susan and Annie lived to be grown and each married. March 3, 1914 Joe Henry Livingston died in Falls County, Texas. We read in his obituary that he was affectionaly known as "Uncle Henry". He was one of the counties pioneer settlers. More details of his life may be found in a book "Livingston Lines" published by his great granddaughter, Elizabeth Williams Whitten.
