My name is Chris Wood and I would like to know all that you know about Augustus Goelzer if you wouldn' t mind to tell me. I bought an 1862 Civil War letter from the at that time Captian A Goelzer of the 60th Indiana Volunteers Regiment Company G to a man in Evansville, IN where he obviously lived at the time. The contents of the letter are interesting but incidental (to me) as I bought it for a gift to my father because it was written from our hometown of Scottsville, KY. I contacted the historical library department in Evansville and was sent the following (and I am trying to get more info from them) "Capt. Augustus Goelzer is listed in the Index of the War of the Rebellion series. The first reference to Series 1, volume 26 lists him with the 60th Indiana, First Brigade under Col. Richard Owen." I have not yet contacted her, but I found today that a lady named Betty Hinton in Chilton, TX seems to be related to him as she says on this sparse genealogy page- htt! p://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/n/Betty-A-Hinton/index.html The letter I have confirms he was an immigrant, and Betty's page says he was from Berlin and died in Scranton, Miss (and obviously lived in Chilton after the war as you said). He is not in the Social Security Death Index, but that is expected as it was probably too early. I don't have membership in Ancestry yet, but there seems to be a immigration report on him and also four newspaper listings which could be war related. If you don't mind, please let me know anything you can about him as soon as you can as I am trying to get a presentation frame put together with the information about Mr. Goelzer's military service and life framed alongside the letter. Thank you.
