This is a copy of my article published in the California State Genealogical Alliance Newsletter. I have also submitted it to several national genealogical publications. Talk to your society and spread the word to our fellow genealogist. Together we can make this happen. A Month Dedicated to Family History October as month dedicated to celebrating family history continues to be discussed among genealogist and family historians across the country. We can make it happen beginning with at grass roots level with individual and collective effort. Individuals can present ideas and suggestions of ways to promote the importance of family history to local and national organizations and volunteering to lead or serve on committees to spearhead the effort to implement those ideas. Possible activities might include some of the following; PBS stations were receive notification of the June release of Ancestors II about March 1. Since we will need to contact our local PBS station to encourage the series be aired on our local channel we could suggest the timing be September into October. Schedule an Introductory to Genealogy Workshop in your community. If possible this could be scheduled in the local genealogical repository. Request local libraries feature displays of Family History material during the month of October. Contact editors of local publications to request that they do a feature on Family History during that period. Contact area Museums, Historical, Ethnic and Religious Organizations suggesting they might do a display, newsletter article, or program highlighting important role of families have held in the history of our community. The program for meetings schedule in October could be a presentation by a popular local personality who can do a presentation related to the History of Local Families. Contact the local Family History Center to determine if they may be scheduling classes or activities during October. Local societies might volunteer to co-host a Family History Center open house. Local Bookstores could be notified that October is Family History Month and suggest they might display various books dealing with family history. Contact local service clubs and organizations volunteering to provide a speaker for an October meeting. We can contact the Board of Supervisors, local Mayors, and Chambers of Commerce requesting they declare October as Family History Month. The array of ideas to promote family history is limited only by the imagination and dedication of those engaged in making things happen. As with research it starts at home. Begin with a committee with an innovative chairperson to explore the possibilities and develop a workable plan. Involve as many members as possible, calling upon them to volunteer their special skills. Be prepared to support those who agree to participate. This may involve providing posters, writing articles for the media, providing speakers, and possibly even writing the official proclamation. Genealogist and family historians have a proven record of success of cooperative efforts. A month celebrating family history will increase awareness of our accomplishments and can highlight the importance of knowledge of the history of one's family. Heightened awareness is likely to increase interest in research and perhaps encourage additional support for records access. Jonelle Ellis Russell <[email protected]>
Hi everyone, I am trying to find out more about the man Walter Humphreys, also known as W.S. Dane during the time he spent in Tx. . William R Coulter/Colter was an ancestor of my husband. Thanks, Betty AFTER EIGHTEEN YEARS Mr Walter Humphreys Comes clear on an Indictment for Murder that has been Hanging over him. On the first of July, 1875 Walter S. Humpreys, shot and killed William R,. Colter in this County. The killing occurred at Tallokes in the old store still standing there. Mr Humpreys was then a boy of nineteen. He left at once and went to Texas and has been living there ever since. At the Nov, 1875 term of Brooks Superior Court The grand jury of which Fleming B Walker, now dead, was foreman, an indictment was found against him for murder. Mr Humpreys was present at the term of court just passed, pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the commission of a lawful act without due caution and circumspection, paid a fine of $300, and the indictment against him is now a thing of the past. The affidavits of *B.W. Dodd, Jordan Baker, C.D. Edmondson and aleck Curles, all of whom were eye witnesses to the killing, were produced in court and they fully exonerated Mr Humpreys charge of murder. Upon reaching Texas Mr Humpreys took the name of W.S. Dane by which name he has been known ever since. He has been in business for a number of years at Chilton, Falls County, Texas, and has prospered. He married in Texas and now has an interesting family of a wife and five children. He left Thursday for his home at Chilton, and when he reaches there his true name of Walter S. Humpreys will be taken up and the assumed name of Dane will be dropped. On the day he left Mr Humpreys had the FREE PRESS to print a hundred copies of the following which he will use at his Texas Home in explaining why the name he has been known by for the past eighteen years is now changed. In 1875, Walter S Humpreys, known as W. S. Dane, shot and killed one, W. R. Colter of Brooks County, Ga. This case was called at this the May term of Brooks Superior Court and disposed of, the evidence showing that Walter Humpheys acted strictly in self defense. Walter S Humphrey's Mother ands Father are still living in this county. He has four brothers and one sister living here also. His father is a farmer and his brother J.T. S. Humphreys is also a substantial farmer. His brother W.S. Humphreys is a lawyer and is the current State Senator from this district. His Brother's A. S. Humphreys Jr and J.S. Humphreys are physicians practicing in this county. Walter S Humphreys and his family enjoyed the esteem and respect of the citizens of this county. While here Walter Humphreys met a large number of his old friends who gave him a hearty welcome and who would be glad to welcome him move back to his old home county of Brooks.

My GG Grandmother Armsted (Onestead Ann?) ADAMS was born at Marlin, TX, 11 Aug 1849, to Dr. Allensworth and Elizabeth (FRENCH) ADAMS. Both died in Rockcastle County, KY. They married 4 Dec 1845 in Texas. I don't know if the marriage took place in Falls Co. Are there any sources available for this time in Texas other than the ones stated in this query? There are references to Dr. ADAMS in "The Handbook of Texas", so we know he was there. He was also referred to in "The Texan Santa Fe Pioneers" by Noel M. Loomis. It states that among the members of the pioneers was the Sutton-Cooke Party consisting of Adams, Allensworth A., Alexander - Lancaster, Ky. Thanks, Maxine

Falls County goes back to a long time ago for me. Westphalia holds many memories. My dear wonderful aunt Helen Maywald lived there for some years as the housekeeper for Father Gideon Stram at the Church of the Visitation. I used to love that place as a child. I hope to head down there this summer to let my children enjoy it as well. Many family members are from Falls Co. or nearby. John Adam Kaiser and Hattie Maywald were my grandparents. Both names are all around that area. My mother, Betty Jean Kaiser is from nearby Ben Arnold in Milam Co. Many family members are buried in Falls Co. as well. I'm always looking for new information or new contacts or family. I seem to recall a really cool antique? shop in Rosebud we used to visit. And Big Red soda! That was another great reason to visit way back then. And that delicious sausage! Playing hide-and-seek in the maizefield, (i don't think we were supposed to be back there though.) Some crazy idea of a ghost of a priest. The memories are too many to count. I would love to hear from anyone who knew any of my family. Hope to see you all soon! Sincerely, Tim Jackson >
Carolyn, My husband is related to Powers, Curry, Huffman and Rogers in Falls County. His 3rd great grandmother was Sarah Smith Huffman Powers. Her first husband was Soloman Huffman and her 2nd husband was Elijah P. Powers. They are buried in Powers or Flowers Cemetery, along with Nicholas Huffman, her son. Soloman and Sarah Huffman's daughter, Tennessee Huffman, married Nathaniel F. Rogers, son of Larkin Rogers and Mary Ann Aycock. Larkin and Mary Ann are buried in Stranger Cemetery. Tennessee and Nathaniel are buried in the Rogers Cemetery in Reagan. I would like to find more info on Sarah and Soloman Huffman. I know they were married in Davidson County, TN. I do not know when Soloman died or where. Great that we can connect. I will be gone Wed afternoon and Thurs morning. Then gone again on Fri noon for a week. I am going to Washington, DC for National DAR meeting. My family in Falls County is the George Morgan family that were massacred on 1 Jan, 1839 at the falls of the Brazos. I am descended through their daughter Sarah Morgan who married Wiley Jones in Clarke County Alabama in 1815. This Morgan/Jones group came to Texas as part of the Sterling Clack Robertson settlement. They came in 1832. I live in Arizona, but have visited in Marlin, Tx. to see the massacre site. The good people of Marlin were very helpful. J.Hatch
The Hudson and Henson families are our links to Falls County. Nellie Cealie Henson b1876, Port Sullivan. Nellie married WT Williams and had several children. After her husband Mr. Williams died, Nellie married R.M. Hudson in Johnson Co TX, 1912. We were told that Mr. Hudson was Nellie's childhood sweetheart and to look in Lott TX to find more information. So far, our R.M. Hudson cannot be accounted for after 1912. Nellie and her family lived in the Central Texas area for the most part of her life. She died in Fort Worth, 1952. Many of her descendants still live in the Fort Worth to Waco area. Successes 1 - Our greatest find was Nellie Henson and RM Hudson's marriage license. When going to the Cleburne court house, looking for a lead, we found their marriage listed in the record book. We were asked if we wanted their marriage license. It seems that they never picked up their original license from the courthouse. As Nellie and RM 's only grandson, my husband was delighted to find this treasure. 2 - When seeking information on Mr. Hudson, we searched for their twin son's birth certificate. Nellie's twin sons were told at the Cleburne courthouse that their birth certificates must have been destroyed in a courthouse fire. New birth certificates were issued with the name they took at birth which was Williams. When we were in the genealogy library in Austin we found the room that holds books listing Texas births-deaths. We found their original combined birth record listed with the name - Two boys Hudson. We got a then requested a copy of the original birth certificate which listed their father as R.M. Hudson, profession - carpenter. We believe additional research in the Falls - Milam county area eventually should lead to more clues.
