    3. Hello , those of you with Erath County grassburrs in your heels, Do either of you know Shucks McCarty, Jay McCarty, Ina McCarty of Walnut Springs and their brother Ab McCarty of the Pettit area? Ab married my wife's brother- in Law's sister, a Burnett from Slapout (Howard, Brown County, Texas. I taught 2 of the 3 sons of Jay- J. Eddie and Little Mack. All 3 got college football scholarships from their outstanding 6 man football playing. I understand that 1/2 of theUniversity of Kansas football scholarships went to 6 man players at one time. JK. Eddie coached at Cleburne and did run a custodial supply house. "Little Mack" coached in Lubbock Schools. Also, I noticed the families of McCarty and Fretwell were linked in the Wyly McCarty tree. According to my records, this Fretwell may have sold the Johnsville Gin to the Riggs and/or Hollis families. Was this the family of Scott Fretwell and his son Cecil? Mrs. Fretwell used to buy groceries in Walnut Springs. While Scott was on a business trip to the Huntsville area, Cecil used to meet usat Buck Little's home to trade motorcycle parts with Herbert, me, and Harold Davis. John Ben Rumph used to ride the bacxkroads with us to swimming and scenic points. As you may know, Cecil broke his foot riding a motorcycle at night and, when his lights failed, he hit a cedar post and broke his foot. He joined the Army during the Korean War and was found dead in front of an American Dugout. All American officers were dead. Cecil had the only bloody bayonet and there were 17 dead North Koreans around him with bayonett stabs. Scott was present in Glen Rose when the Veterans monument was dedicated on the Courthouse square. Cecil was also given the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumsly. It so affected his dad that he was converted at the Cottonwood Baptist Church below Chalk Mountain and never missed a service if he was able to get there. I was told this story by several and saw one Glen Rose newspaper reporting the ceremony. Scott , when younger, back when Clyde, Bonnie, and Raymond Hamilton used to sleep in or near the Johnsville Church of Christ, Scott and family would attend the summer outdoor meetings at the church tabernacle. So did we in the 1930's. He was a good neighbor. Ring any bells??? Take care, Charles Wyly
