    3. Hi, How far back have you traced this Edwards branch ?? It seems Jemima Cleveland, daughter of the Rev. War Co. Benjamin Cleveland of King's mountain and 99 other battles with no losses. She and James Wyly had two children, Gen. James Rutherford Wyly, Ga. Militia, born Blont Co. Tenn. and Elizabeth Wyly. James married Barbara Fuqua and had no children in Gordon Co. Ga. and Blont Tennessee then married Mary Whittenburger, Pennsylvania Dutch and had a large family. One grandson was CAPT. ALFRED HENDERSON WYLY & his Balch in laws - the East Tesas Redlanders who joined Gen. Sam Houston at Groce's Crossing with other groups the day before a starving Santa Anna was defeated, due to the Rear Admiral Moore of Annapolis then Texas Navy then San Angelo. Admiral and his 4 ship Texas navy sailed direct to the Yucatan State of Mexico. They al rebelled against Santa Anna as a dictator and the two navies kept the Mexican navy barricaded in Vera Cruz, leaving Santa Anna to find empty rivers, not supply ships. The Runaway Scrape and Houston pulled a scortchet earth on Santa Anna similar to the Russians with Napoleon and Mexico. NOW BACK TO THE EDWARDS FAMILY- Jemima (Myers? ) Cleveland Wyly married EVANGELIST EDWARDS OR EVAN EDDARDS ON SOME RECORDS. He was killed in the Cumberland Gap, 1796, leaving 3 Edwards and two Wyly children. He was scalpped in the presence of Jemima and J.R. Wyly , age 12 or so, hid in the water under the bank. Elizabeth grabbed two EDWARDS children and jumpped off a rise into some canebrakes. the advanced hunting party came back and shot the Indian scalping Evangelist Edwards. Col Ben Cleveland , a combat veteran and leader of "Cleveland's Bulldogs or Roundheads", including James Wyly, stood and wept now that he had a chance to help his daughter and she needed him. He gave her land in East Feliciana Parrish, Clinton, La and money. She raised the Edwards children there, but Gen. Wyly seems to have drifted back to Blont County , Tennessee to Landin or Louden (the same town) and lived there until he married Gov. John Sevier's Granddaughter Sarah Hawkins Clark in Gov. Sevier's home in Knoxville, Tenn. then they had children in Tennessee and Georgia, where he built the Tugaloo Turnpike and Inns in Hiawasse, and Toccoa, Ga. where he built Traveller's Rest Inn, now a Ga. State Park and Clevelands lived with or near him. Jemima married a distant Cleveland cousin in La. and when she died the cousin tried to claim her land away from her children. Ga. Militia Gen. James Rutherford Wyly, War of 1812, his firsd cousin Gen. Ben Cleveland and "Devil John", as Col. Ben affectionately called him, went to court in Clinton, La. and regained custody of Jemima's Louisiana land for Col. |Ben's estate. The records, in English but questions in several volumes and answers in corresponding volumes have a load of CLEVELAND-EDWARDS- WYLY history and experiences. Elizabeth was the grandmother of Elizabeth Budd Stephenson of Covington, Ga. also a certified Geneaologist on all these lines. Janie Furman has the above linkage as a supplement to her Sevier- Kay connections to the DAR accepted very recently, just as is stated in Pres. Cleveland's Geneaologies of 1899 for the first tine in recent history. Janie is a Sevier- Wyly- Cleveland 3 rd cousin in New Mexico. Can get you the DAR numbers if you want them. Next Question: was Gov. Edwin Edwards, of La, the one who flew into Stephenvillea few years ago and paid cash for a ranch, of Jemima's Lineage? James Grady Wyly, Neely Plantation, Talula, La. (Under the Vicksburg Bluffs) was desc. from James and Mary Whittenburger. He knew of the Edwards connections. and Louisiana connections. Some geneaologists get red eyed when it is brought up. Confused yet? Some won't go there and others are now being accepted by DAR on the same trail that was repeated to Sarah Hawkins Clark Wyly by her Grandad Sevier and she to her grandchildren while living in their homes near Clarkesville, Ga. and managing Clark land. Gen. Wyly married a Frances Wallace and raised Absolam Cleveland's son John for some years when he were small. They came to Selden , Texas repeating the same stories coverring 200 years., third repetition. Jean Wakefield Riggs told me she used to ride to the Selden(Kay or Stone) cotton Gin with her UNCLE A HURLEY and stop at the coverrred cistern of Grandad's Uncle Bill, or William Sevier Wyly and rock and talk about life there 1867 & before. sHERWIN wOOD, ONE OF oLIVE wYLY'S TWINS NOW LIVES IN THE HOUSE, RESTORED AND ROCKED. The 5 th generation is now living there. Take care Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
