    3. Hi, When I was in high school, Mont Thomas was sheriff and his chief deputy was "Blackie" Martin. I think they were in office when a neighbor had a flashback to France and battles of WW1 and killed his wife and daughter, thinking they were German soldiers. A Model A or B Ford patrol car warned us to leave our house with no lights while much of the neighborhood hid in fear. This sheriff may have been a Hassler, not sure. A deputy came back without lights, walked towards our house, and called dad's name, then told us to drive to Selden without lights and spend the night at Grandad's without lights which might attract a shellshock victim. The man was dead at the time, but we did not know it. He was a good neighbor and had worked for Erath County grading roads for years. a local boxer was "Sonny Boy" Roberts, all in Stephenville.Think they were all related, but didn't know Mr. Roberts very well . Dad knew Mont Thomas and Mr. Martin. His son has been on this net a few months ago seeking Martin info. My Uncle Emmett Carey moved to Fort Worth and he and a Jack Martin ran the 23rd Street Garage off North Main near the Old Spagetti Warehouse in the old Armour packing company slaughterhouse. They handled repos and repairs from a West 7 th car dealer and sold them across the street. I worked there a few days while at Convair. Bill Martin was an air force pilot in World War II. He and a friend bought an old bomber, installed a water tank, and flew fresh fish from the coast for the Zuider Zea. he had 2 or 3 restaurants and , after retirement, built the Bill Martin's seafood restaurant and motel and station south of Burleson, Texas. , now run by his nieces or granddaughters. "Son" Martin of Venus, Texas was his kin and had a large garage where he serviced cars, trucks, and school busses. R.A. (Bud) Martin lives at the duffau Creek in Three Way School Dist. and he and wife Fannie are 90+. Son Harley is now an Assembly of God minister in Haltom City and his church did run a rest home. Brother Bud Jr. lives in Cleburne, and daughter married a Robinson. They live at Selden. Bud and Fannie moved from a farm adjoining the LBJ ranch near Johnson City, Texas. Don't know the connection, if any, but Lyndon Johnson's aunt was a Martin. Martin Brothers ran a gas station , wholesale auto parts, and sometimes bus station 1 block from Stephenville Courthouse Square on Fort Worth hwy. The loop around town hurt most business in that area. 1930's into 1970's. George L. Martin was an immigrant from England. he and his wife lived on Glen Rose Hwy about 2 miles from the new loop. Walter Syer, 1862-1937 was an English immigrant fromLongham, England who settled in Skipper's Gap- area of Erath County between Stephenville and Glen Rose. and bought 375 acres of McDermit ranch before the cedar had spread that far , partially due to birds and fences making roosts where open prairie and gravel hills had only post oak groves for roosts. .I know there are probably hundreds of Martins, but maybe these might be a link you need. Sorry I can't remember more. happy hunting Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
