Hi, Hewitt is a city of 8,000 plus and houses are being built 10 & 20 at a time. It was on Old Temple Road out of Waco, but now is surrounded by I-35- Robinson citylimits, Waco on 2 sides, near Woodway and is home of Midway High School, Midway District. Lorena School District has many houses in Hewitt. Two trains a day - 120 cars of Wylming coal fly through to Austin and San Antonio. We join the Waco industrial Park- Coca Cola Minute made international bottlers, Tenneco, Time DC, Huck, M7M Mars factory, and regional testing labs, and many more. Caterillar has a factory in London for large- diesel dump trucks- 5 foot wheels. The second is under construction. They will ship to Mexico and Canada and pay $18.00 per hour after completing their training program at Texas State Technical College (Old Conally Air Base) Conallly and Hewitt area each has a Raytheon Aircraft harness factory or modification plant. We are 3 miles from Waco's Richland Mall. The older Lake Air Mall is the oldest completely enclosed Mall in the State. There are several other factories within 5 miles, including a National PX supply and Pittsburg Paints. Woodway is the Highland park of Waco area- high living standards and codes and completely surrounded by Waco, which now goes past the McGregor airport. , 3 or 4 miles from McGregor. Hewitt has strict building codes and excellent streets. New houses $80,000 to $ 250, 000.00 One next door neighbor is American born jaanese- a retired missionary. Next house on the corner is a Black family. He works for the State. Across the street is a man born in West Germany. down a little is a German, a Syrian P resbyterian, some German Texas born Lutherans, and a Spanish Jehova Witness. Some of the Patel families from India live in Hewitt. Many retire from Fort Hood and start over in this area. Bet a Geneaologist in Killeen - Fort Hood would have fun. Hope this is not more than you asked. With a strip of Waco homes and Woodway, the school District has far more population than Stephenville at present. and Thurber was once 10 to 30 times larger than Stephenville. Many I attrend church with have Erath County or Tarleton roots.McLemores and Warrens and friends owned much of the cotton land Hewitt now occupies. Take care Charles Wyly The old town of 4 or 5 houses still exist. It was named for a Railroad executive - a Hewitt, who located the station here in Steam and Interurban days. The station was recently moved back to the tracks and will be restored as a museum. People who ran the depot and teletype are still living. Earliest settlers were one Wyly, a astor Wylie from Baylor, and the Warren and McLemore families. Hewitt Drive in 12 years has changed from 2 lanes through hay fields to 5 lanes and 6 at shift change. We have had McDonald's, Taco Bell, Burger King, 2 chicken places, Trevenio's and Whataburger built in the last 5 years, all near the High school, which has Marine Corps ROTC for boys and girls.
