Hi, can't remember his first name, but there was a Hickey who was a barber in Stephenville, Texas . To me he was Mr. Hickey 60 years ago. He sometimes cut my hair. the first name of Jim stickes in my mind. The Texas Agency for licensing barbers and /or cosmetologists in Austin probably has a list of all licensed operators. This Hickey definitely had the keen eyes and high cheek bones so characheristic of many Eastern Indians. WARD- now there's a book. Guess you knew the beloved Woman of the Women's Council who trained and approved the next Cherokee Chief at old Chota or Echota was first married to Mankiller. She fought beside him after he died. Her second husband was a Ward of the Quala Cherokee area of Georgia and North Carolina, south of Gatlainburg. He was Scotch - Irish and they lived among the first white settlers in North Georgia where my Wyly- Hatchett- Cleveland- Clark families lived from Toccoa to Hiawasse & into the Carolinas. Her neighbors and husband taught her dairy and poultry husbandry and better farming methods, which she carried back to the Blue Peace City of Refuge, Echota in early 1800's . I attended school with a Nancy Ward in Selden, Erath County, Texas who had the hair , eyes and light olive skin of many Indians- no connection known, That was 1944-46. I do know , however that the Buffingtons of Bruceville- Eddy , Texas were close kin to Mary Jane Buffington who in late 1800.s married a son of William Clark Wyly of Tyler, Tex. and Ga. in Arkansas and he was on the Tahlequah Cherokee Council and ran the orphanage in 1900. Many Arkansas and Texas Cherokee had Georgia & Carolina roots. Nancy Ward , in Echota, heard her old Georgia friends were having a severe drought so she sent them 300 dogs to eat to prevent starvation. She also sent cattle, which her son in law Gen. Joseph Martin of the Clarkesville- Toccoa area returned to her and said thanks but no thanks. He was an Indian agenttrying to help the Indians and she was helping the Anglos. In Waco and Stephenville , a Joe L. Ward was an auto parts dealer with a Waco warehouse. He retired in the last 10 -15 years- or at least the business names changed. I have taught with Love family members in Waco, Black and white. One recently retired as an Assistant Principal I substituted for another when her baby was born. Taylors were all over Erath and Bosque and McClennan and Ellis Counties that I knew of and taught. Many of the Waco area Black and White and some "Spanish " in Waco claim Cherokee and/or Choctaw heritage. Historically there was a Capt. Kitt Taylor, pre Civil War, who married Amy Artis Wyly in Tennessee and Andrew jackson, a struggling young lawyer, had his first law office in a chair by the fireplace of their home, where he rented a room. "Old Chola" had not yet developed his later selective memory of promises made to native American Americans. Seems the Blue Peace Cities of Refuge for one and all regardless of race or social status, and the Georgia Gold Fields made him forget a lot of treaties and personal promises to personal friends.. If this rings any bells I will look for more info on Mr. Hickey & others.
