Doctor's Certificates were issued by the State, or, In Mexico, Benito Juarez signed one for Great Great Grandad Dr. W. P. Hatchett's brother. They were given to men who "Read Medicine" and served an aprenticeship under an older Doctor, studying textbooks at night. Dr. Hatchett was licensed in Texas and was said to have attended the University of Cincinatti Medical school. I have his book of formulas and perscriotions for common ailments- (I think it is his- or copied from his by Great Grandmother. ) and he was also a pharmacist, a minister, and a land speculator. I understand the U. of Cinn. cannot produce a degree completed by him , but there have been all kinds of ways it could be missing now. My first Stephenville Doctor, Dr. Naylor, also did dentistry. Don't think he did major surgery, but he and Dr. hatchett made rural house calls.
