Hi, Linda! I was born and reared in Erath County and taught at Venus. We lived on the curve outof Venus on US 67 toward Alvarado. My wife's ancestors in Alvarado and Cleburne included Ash, Clayton, Jack, Gillespie, Riley, and Renfro. I found a name that might be of interest- you are a Conaster descendant. Mrs. Nelda Smith Stone Wilson of 524 West Sypert, Nashville, Arkansas, 71852. She published a Stone family History Book and a Howard County History book. They may have been combined . She sent a photo of a TIM CONASTER and cousin ECTOR WEATHERS, age 17 for both, who (Probably 20 years ago) where Tim was examining a vine coverred headstone in an abandoned cemetery. Nelda says there are many of these in Southwest Arkansas. Some have no names, just a rock headstone, abandoned over 100 years ago when the land owners moved to Texas or farther west. The photo was taken of Tinm Conaster near Antioch, Arkansas. The Bateman Cemetery, containing some Stone, Carey, Copeland and others is now maintained. Engraved headstones had to be shipped down river from S. Louis and up the Red River to the port of Fulton. William Bateman was buried in this area when George Washington was still living- 1797 & his stone is marked. I am seeking Bateman info- some from Mecklenburg County are on the U.S.Census and the Cherokee rolls. After 1884 headstones were brought into Southwest Arkansas by rail. In 1890 some local shops began cutting and engraving headstones. In Texas many were marked in limestone rock with chisels and scratch tools. Some were poured concrete.
