Hi, I attended Church at Pony Crek, commonly called by Many, Box Church. I nmoticed the present group useing the abandoned building has a Historic Marker I question . Dr. D.D. Tidwell of Duffau and Southwestern Seminary and Baylor Ubniversity read the history of the Church at their centenial in appx. 1960's. The Church was organized by Bill Robinson of Stephenville and Dublin churches, and partner Great Great Grandad Dr. and pharmacist and Preacher Dr. William Pinckney Hatchett It was organized as a "Church of Christ to be called Pony Creek Baptist Church " and elected delegates to Paluxy Baptist Asociation. Most Primitive Baptists did not attend, even though, like some Methodist and Episcopal churches, had spontaneous, not scheduled footwashings- not as a doctorine but as a sign of humility. A few yards towards Johnsville was the Box Methodist Church and lodge hall and community school, where Great Aunt Susie Moxley taught while living with some Belcher kin. In late 1890's Ben Wyly of Atlanta and Stephenville was an elder in the Methodist Church there - and a member of the lodge upstairs. The first cemetery, mostly Evans kin is in John Rumph's pasture in front- not behind the church. Between there and the Rumph home where John Grew up is the private Rumph- Beach-Gillentine Cemetery, with a rock fence- a few hundred yards from the foirst Rumph Rock home. John is now across U.S. 67 from it. Keep going past Hurley and Riggs community houses and land and down Miller Hill was the last Pony Creek School. Mitchell Crek Church and cemetery are across the road and past the old school ground. The Post office was listed as Pizarro. John Crockett, formerly a partner and soldier with Quantrill and the James Brothers. This has given rise to folk legends of silver coins buried there by possibly Jesse and John. " Post Hole Banks" were common from then to 1940's and longer for a few. More later Charles A.
