Hello, Some Wylys have two connections to the Graves family tree and my parents were taught by W.T. Graves of Evergreen, near Stephenville. He taught in many Erath County schools and also was a real estate agent in later years. Dr. Doyle Graves was teaching in Tarleton and was Head of the Poultry Husbandry dept when I took a class or two under him in late 1940's. He and Dr. A.J. Spangler and Dr. Autrey were long time Tarleton Ag teachers. Back to earlier Graves- some of the Graves families had lived in the Barbados or Canary Islands on sugar cane plantations before coming on to the U.S. Mary Graves was born about 17444 and married Col. Ben Cleveland, Rev. WAr in North Carolina Militis. Col. Ben had a daughter named Jemima, born to a Mrs. Myers. When Jemima and her two Wyly children and Evangelist Edwards were with a group passing through Cumberland Gap, 1796, when Indians attacked and scalped Evan Eddards then injured Jemima in the head with a tomahawk. Jemima returned to NC area with 2 Wyly and 2 or 3 Edwards children. Someone told Col. Ben she was destitute. He, with Mary Grave's approval, stood and cried and Mary and Col. Ben gave her a Child's share of his land, in East Feliciana Parrish, Clinton, Louisiana- Tippah Mississipi area. She raised Edwards and Cleveland children there son James Rutherford Wyly and his sister Elizabeth stayed back in Tennessee (Once part of North Carolina). J.R. became Ga. Milia Gen. in Florida in War of 1812- leading 700 Anglo and 400 Cherokee against the English and Seminoles . Later, J.R. and a C Cleveland Cousin Gen.Ben Cleveland (Grandson of Col. Ben) and John Cleveland, Uncle of J.R. and Elizabeth, left a few volumes of testimony in Clinton, La. Probate courts,. When Jemima died, her 3 rd husband Daniel Cleveland was trying to edge Jemima's children out, but the land was secured for the best interest of the Edwards and Cleveland Children. Nweither J.R. nor Elizabeth profited from the Louisiana land. Was this ancestors of Gov. Edwards of La. who also paid cash for an Erath County Ranch a few years ago and flew back to Baton Rouge???? J.R. married Sarah Hawkins Clark, granddaughter of Gov. John Sevier- a friend of Col. Ben Cleveland in the Tennessee Governor's home. Sarah's Uncle according to some reports was the niece of the Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition . Another GRAVES - Susannah Graves was either a sister or cousin of Mary . She married part Cherokee Gen Joseph Martin, Cherokee Indian Agent. He was a very good friend of Col. Ben Cleveland . Gen Martin had 2 Anglo wives and 2 Cherokee wives.Several divorces back then which some question. He sold the Traveller's Rest In to J.R. and Sarah for Jesse Walton, a relative and Wylys sold it to the Jarrett and Lucas Families. - in Toccoa Georgia. It is on the Internet as a Georgia State Park and the 3 story Inn is in good shape today. Gen. Martin and Susannah Graves were ancestors of the line of Great Grandad Robert's brother William Clark Wyly and Amelia Starr of Tyler, Texas. William buffing ton Wyly's lineage included Rev. Jesse Bushyhead of Longhair Clan of Cherokees and of the Buffington family and were and are active in the Western Cherokee Capitol of Tahlequah, I.T. (once Oklahoma was formed.) Some of this Buffington family now lives near Bruceville- Eddy Schools . Another on that lineage is Capt. John Stuart. We could not find him in Rev. War records, then I noticed one report that he was the Colonial British Agent to the 5 Civilized Tribes before 1776. I suspect this is the same John Stuart. Confused yet?
