I have several family connections to early Texas and wish to explore my family in Erath Co., TX. My great grandmother was Nancy Elizabeth Howard, b. 1837, Nacogdoches, TX who m. James Carroll Rogers in Stephenville, Erath Co., in 1857. They were married by Justice of the Peace Dooley, reportedly one of the early marriages in a log cabin that later burned. Nancy's sister was Mary Carolyn Howard, b. 1836, who married William Franklin Stephen. My grandfather, Thomas Pitts Rogers, was b. 1866, in Limestone Co., TX but was married to my grandmother, Florence Virginia Womack, also in Stephenville, TX. I also believe that Nancy and Mary's brother, Leander Guy Howard, lived in Erath Co. My distant cousin, Homer Stephen, now deceased, reported that he was buried in an unmarked grave in Erath Co. Our Howard "cousins" are now trying to find any information on Leander or any of our Howard family. I would love to hear from anyone who recognizes th! e names any of these early TX settlers.
