Hi, Col. Honzie Rogers was retired Military when he became President of the Walnut Springs school board. Some put his name Rodgers- not sure - as some Texas Germans lived in the area. Womacks lived there- I had always thought they were Norwegians, from the Womack Hall and Lutheran Church between Clifton and Whitney- One flew the German Republic Flag in WW 2 while his son was overseas fighting Germans- or was it WW1? Dad taught some Womacks in Harmony School near Meridian where the entire first grade spoke Norwegian- they soon learned English ., without English as a Second Language or any Federal Proigram. Then I learned of Womacks in Rev. War and one marrying a Hatchett cousin in Bosque County. Honzie Rogers had a bayonet scar across his chin and upper neck from combat days. Barber Ira Hurley drowned while untangling hooks in the Bosque- Jackson Hole- Jackson Crossing area or just below-, and a tree fell on him and held him under - no wind that day. . "Aunt" Lela Belcher Hurley said that Honzie knocked on their door at dayligit the day of the funeral. He had some breakfast makings and told her to let him do the cooking and housekeeping the day of the funeral > He proceeded to wash dishes and cook for family and best I remember, he missed the funeral taking care of the house and meeting those who brought food. "Aunt" Lela and my Great Aunt Etta Robinson Moxley were cousins and liferlong friends- Lela in her Walnut Springs Greenhouse and Aunt Etta was in Fort Worth, but they visited a lot when we lived there. The Euloth Family was their kin and lived across from the Walnut Springs Cemetery. Lela and Etta had shared an apartment before they married- either in Stephenville or Johnsville. Aunt Etta was a descendqant of Rev. "Choctaw" Bill Robinson, once half time pastor of Stephenville Foirst Baptist and Dublin First Baptist. Rev. Robinson and Great Great Grandad REv. & M.D. William Pinckney Hatchett were organizers of chirches in Hico and Pony Creek and Dr. Hatchett orgasnized 17 other churches from 1845 to 1890. His son organized the Selden church, where Dr. Hatchett retired. Oner of Aunt Etta's Daughters - Elbertine Moxley, married Marvin Shannon, the Blind Fort Worth Attorney and part owner of the Shannon Funeral homes and ambulance services in Tarrant County. Marvin once played golf with Bob Hope at the Colonial Country Club charity benefit. - Marvin had his Caddy to put down an orientation board for his toes and tell him the distance to the next hole Elbertine's young brother, J.B. Moxley and I used to spend a few days with Great Aunt Susie Moxley of Indian Creek, near Pleasant Hill Methodist Church- or "Chigger Hill" to the older generation. Great Aunt Susie would take us to Indian Creek above the Bosque, build a campfire, and fish or sleep all night. She would tell us the Bible stories about Daniel, Shadrack, Meshack, and Abendego of the Bible and how their Kosher diet made them more clear headed and fair skinned with no acne or skin blemish, The wise men who ate the King's food were not fair skinned and were not wise thinkers.They were killed when Daniel interpreted the King's dream. and they could not. A fishing trip like that will be rememberred a lifetime, along with riding her horses and doing her farm chores with no running water or electricity. Somehow it was different from home. She lived on the family owned farm or where she taught or attended College all her life. You asked about the Strouds- Some Strouds were of Scotch- Irish Background- possibly with deeper German Roots. In Malone , Texas, where Coach Henry "Hank" Stroud of Walnut Springs was born, the name was spelled legally STRAUCH- and the older Generations spoke German but some Coaches knew him as STROUD. he became a School Supt. in Hill County Schools AND kept his dad's Malone- Bynum Blackland Farm.
