Go to Rootsweb.com archives of Txerath site. The Erath County Poor Farm has been discussed here over the last 10 years. Best I remember it was off Hwy 183 on the right past the RR overpass. It is now either part of the Texas A&M Experiment Farm. or the Tarleton Farm. Wasn't Tarleton College dairy and experiment farm on left of 218 north and east of Huckaby Highway- Graham Street. We used to ride Tarleton busses to the College farm to study cattle judging with Dr. Reed and others as part of our classroom work. The farm once supplied all milk Tarleton used. later Payton Frakes Dairy provided it all- possibly on a State Bid. Payton name was same as Pattons from Patton, Texas between Valley Mills and Crawford. . The Poor farm was for elderly without other income or property opr visible legal means of support. . Texas paid Civil War Vets pension, - I have some of Great Grandad Moxley's envelopes containing his check, with the Confederate St. Anthony's Cross- Stars and Bars flag next to the U.S. postage stamp. Those who lived there were expected to work as much as able, like picking the garden or seeing after chickens and eggs or picking fruit. County Deputies were assinged prisoner Work Details to wwork on the Poor Farm. Can't remember the exact story, but once some prisoners refused to do farm work on the County Poor Farm, and some Deputy handcuffed one to a tree limb on tiptoes while the others worked some. Probably on good crop years the jail shared food from the Poor Farm to keep expenses down. Charles A.
