Hello Thanks for writing. This is very interesting History. My line of Kings are from Bottom to top: Josephine King married Jackson H. McElroy. Her parents were William King and Winnifred Hardie King. They had 13 children. Josephine Sarah Mary Laurvicy Theophilus James Argent Aurora Frances Arena Georgeann Katherine Elizabeth Nancy Susan Armenta William Robert Edgar Lee King Jennetta Belle William's parents were Bennet and Mary "Polly" ? King. Bennet king was from S. Carolina and moved to Georgia. William was in Stewart County GA and Dale County Alabama before coming to Texas. William had some siblings, I only know of John Jehu and Hiram. Josephine died at age 29 and is buried at Hico TX, Winnefred is buried at White Church Cemetery close to Glen Rose TX. William left her and last 2 children and they never heard from him again. Some say he went to Oklahoma. Thanks again for the info. I appreciate your going to so much trouble for me. Hi, Which Kings? In the Txerath Archives is a note which indicates that Dr. King of Tarleton was not related to the King Family of the former Missouri Governor King, whose descendants were attorneys and ran the King and Brauer Title and Abstract on the east side of the Stephenville Courthouse Square. They were apparently Sevier Distant cousin of the Wyly family in Erath County. Nancy Sevier, daughter of Gov. and Col. John Sevier of Tennesse and leader in Rev. War Battle of King's Mountain, North Carolina was the sister of Elizabeth Sevier, , the mother of Sarah Hawkins Clark, who married James Rutherford Wyly in the Governor's Mansion(? Marble Springs Log Cabin ?)when Col, Sevier was Governor at Knoxville. he had 17 children. One was killed at King's Mountain Battle by Maj. Patrick Ferguson's Loyalist Tory Militia. Nancy married Walter King, B. 1764, Virginia. He and Seviers ran a Sullivan County Iron Works, Tennessee. . One of this family was engaged to Sam Houston when she died. Children of Nancy ands Walter were 1. Walter King, left Tennessee Descendants. 2. Amanda, B. 1798 and married in MissouriHusbaands were a Bayless and a Brazeale, who was killed in Misouri by a Mormon group. 3. Gov. Austin Augustus King, B. 9/28/1801, Tennessee MarRied 1. NANCY HARRIS ROBERTS, 2. MARTHA WOODSON, . He buried in Misouri and as a District Judge had sat on the trial of Navoo, Mo. Mormons before they started to Utah. Gov. King had10 children. His sister was head of the House when he was Governor. William's son William m. a Pence in Mo and a Clark in Stephenville, Texas. 4. William Rufus King, 5. Maria 6.Sarah 7. Nancy 8. Louisa, b. 1811, married a Cox, he died and she married his brother. 9. and other children are listed of Gov. King- with several descendants in Erath County, Texas. next Generation-Thomas Benton King, m. Clara Bingham in Erath County and was a Stephenville Teacher, and Judge appx. 1900He was in Texas Legislature, 1919. Austin Augustus King #3 was a Stephenville Newspaper publisher and never married, several more pages of Kinf Descendants in Erath County- too many to list tonight. They should be in the Sevier or King family trees in Rootsweb. Some rumor says that these Kings were related to the owner of the King Ranch, who left Missouri as a Merchant Seaman from a Missouri port- but this has not been positively documented.Supposedly a Shipping Company did some financing of the King Ranch. I also had a Cousin on Wyly Line- MATTIE ROBERTS SOMERVILLE who died in 1990's and I have her records from West Monroe, La. of her Alabama- Ga- Miss. Lon Latta was James Alonzo Latta. He was born in Kentucky and had other family in the area. He was married to my grandfather's sister, Hollon Bryan. They had one child, Millard Ray Latta, and they had a foster child or adopted child, Belle Hanley. Lon Latta married Mary Dennis in 1907 and I know that he was living in Fort Worth by 1910. I am also very interested in information about Lon Latta's Bar. Lon Latta bought property jointly with some of my Bryan family members and also bought and sold from my grandfather and great-grandfather. My grandfather, Redic Bryan, may have worked for him as he was a saloon keeper in Comanche County in 1900. I don't think that he had the means to purchase his own saloon at that time and I have wondered if Lon Latta owned that saloon as well. I really appreciate the information on the Allard genealogy. I already knew most of it, but still it was nice to refresh my memory. I'm still wondering, though, about Lon Latta's Bar and fine cigars. Where was the business located, and what type of business was it? And who was Lon Latta? Many thanks, Donna
Thanks Lori I don't recognize those names, but I don't have a lot of Info on the Kings. I have Josephine King, her father William King and his father Bennet King. Josephine had 2 brothers and 10 sisters. Josephine is buried in the Hico Cemetery, no tombstone. If I could find her grave I would buy her a stone. Thanks very much for answering my query. >From the History of Erath County, compiled by the Erath County Historical Society in 1890: Aaron Hardin "H" Allard. Aaron Hardin "H" Allard born February 22, 1837, in Missouri, son of Aaron Hardin and Polly Weaver Allard, who in early 1840's moved to Hopkins County, Texas. In 1856 H Allard came to Erath County about the time the County was organized, met and married Sarah Ann Colbert. They bought 262-1/2 acres in Johnsville Community from the State of Texas at $1.00 per acre, raised cattle and farmed while Indians in this area were a constant threat to family and property. Indians often took his stock, rode around the house hollering, etc. H, a Texas Ranger, was gone from home often; was wounded in the hand by and Indian arrow at the battle of Dove Creek in Tom Green County. The white men were outnumbered and suffered great hardship, lost the battle, were forced to retreat. Mr. Allard sold the farm, bought another in the Rocky Point Community. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge in Stephenville, and Pony Creek Baptist Church H Allard died February 28, 1891 of measles; is buried in the Allard Cemetery 5 miles east of Stephenville, which he had donated to the county previously. Ira Aaron, called Dutch, was born April 29, 1877, died January 1, 1957. February 4, 1903, Dutch married Lura Langdon, daughter of Welcome and Margaret Ross Langdon and niece of Fielding Ross, who was sheriff of Erath County in the 1870's. In 1906 Dutch Allard had a hardware and grocery store in Bluff Dale, moved back to Stephenville in 1910, became partner in B F Compton Hardware, presently Nix Hardware site. January 3, 1904 Virtie Odessa Allard was born to Dutch and Lura Allard; and Virgil Ray Allard, born September 25, 1905; died November 23, 1963. Virtie Allard graduated from Stephenville High School in 1922, the first class to graduate from what is now the Middle School, graduated from Tarleton 1924, taught in Briscoe County school, there married D G Joiner June 22, 1927. He died June 24, 1955. The Joiner's daughter Virtie Verlyn whose history appears also in this book was born April 12, 1932 in Silverton Texas, is married to D C "Donnie" Walker. Joiners moved to Stephenville in 1938 and to Fort Worth in 1940. September 23, 1961 Virtie Allard Joiner married A H Dudley, who is also a native of Erath County and has numerous Bostick and Dudley relatives here; in 1969 the Dudleys moved to Stephenville where they currently reside. I reported in November the sad state of the historic San Antonio Confederate Cemetery which can be seen at: http://www.tarleton.edu/~stovall/Photos/SACSA/SACCleangraves.htm I'm happy to report the San Antonio Alamo Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is organizing a major clean up on March 18th of this year. Below are the details for those who would like to help with either labor or a donation. "The Alamo Camp #1325 cordially invites the Texas Lone Star Greys Camp, the COL John RIP Ford Camp and the Hood's Texas Brigade Camp to join us in cleaning the San Antonio Confederate Cemetery at 9AM on Saturday March 19. We expect volunteers from a number of organizations. Bring gasoline powered equipment and/or hand tools. We will have riding mowers and heavy-duty weed eaters available. Wear hats and bring water. This clean up will prepare the cemetery for the Confederate Decoration Day events scheduled for April 24. You are all invited to participate or attend that event as well. Details will be forthcoming. The cemetery is located at New Braunfels Avenue and Commerce Street (look for the First National flying high!) We are accepting donations to offset the cost of gasoline and other items from those who cannot participate in the cleanup. Checks may be sent to Alamo Camp #1325, 1423 N. Confederate Indigent Families Lists (1863-1865) http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/cif/ On November 24, 1863, the Texas Legislature passed a Joint Resolution stating that the government pledged "support and maintenance of [the soldiers'] families during their absence from home." In accordance with this Resolution, an "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers" passed on December 15, 1863. The Act set aside $1,000,000 annually to be paid the "families, widows, and dependents of soldiers currently serving in State or Confederate forces, or of soldiers killed or disabled in service." Chief Justices of the counties, on or before March 1 in 1864 and 1865, submitted lists of servicemen and the number of their dependents eligible for relief. The County Clerk administered the money distributed to the county for this purpose. Please note that lists were not compiled in every county; those counties are not represented in the index. The information varies somewhat from county to county. While the number of dependents is always provided, additional information may include some of the following elements: name of the soldier; currently in service; disabled or killed in service; unit; acting head of household. Please be aware that only an index of names appears at this site. Linda Mearse has transcribed the records on file in the State Archives in her book, Confederate Indigent Families Lists of Texas 1863-1865. The town official called Morgan Mill- one Morgan, owner and one mill. I have heard many call it Morgan's Mill. Whatever, we are all talking about the same place. Does anyone know anything at all about the Mill? Was it water powered, or powered by steam from a wood or Thurber Coal fire, or was it powered by a mule hitched to a lever, which turned the gears_ Was it a syrup mill, like Alfred Scrimscher in Selden- Sims Creek, a feed grinding mill, or a grain grinding mill? Did it supply needs to Thurber city? On one ranch, low grade coal can be picked up on the surface. At the Selden Cotton gin, if you wanted yuour cotton Ginned, Grandad said you had to feed the wood burning furnace for steam power . When Jerry Scrimscher finally took over, many years later, he had Gas or Diesel power for his Selden and Throckmorton Gins. In 1940's , Thurber coal from a surface pit, loaded with a Ford Tractor and front loading scoop was stored at Tarleton Power Plant during WW2 in case the gas or electric supply failed. The Steam radiators were still in classrooms and the central plant supplied the steam for heat. Conmcrete tunnels joined the buildings , with insulated steam pipes, and the tunnels were once used for students and teachers to take shelter from tornadoes. In 1970 0r 80's, Thurber Coal was mined from an open pit at Thurber and used at Chaparrel Steel in Midlothian- Venus area, on Hwy 67. They held the world's record for turning tons of scrap autos into Construction Rebar, and Medical waste was also burned in the furnace. The historic marker at the Thurber smokestack landmark has a marker which says that there is enough coal known to be left there to supply Fort Worth area with fuel for 600 years. Today, there are 4 to 6 - 100 car trains coming through Hewit or McGregor- with Wyoming Coal for San Antonio Elkectric needs. Will Thurber be back- like Grosebeck coal or the planned Riesel Coal - electric plant? seems most of the interest there now is deep natural Gas. Homes in the Paluxy Valley and in Hill County and some Stephenville homes- some two story, 1900's were heated with a Coal burning fireplace. Those living near RR tracks could sometimes pick up chunks of coal along the tracks. Our home in Brandon, 1970's - 2 story- had a 1 chimney- 2 sided Coal Fireplace with an A Frame inside . Iron doors were missing. We burned wood in it. Sorry, I am rambling. Charles A. Hi, I think there is a Bob Caraway buried in the Indian Creek Cemetery. Dad knew him well and had attended school with him at Selden or Stephenville or Tarleton. He had land, somewhere on the Bosque, I think, between Selden and Clairette? Hi Linda, We are cousins. George Edward Jackson's father and second wife, Nancy Anders, are my great great grandparents.
