    3. It is said that my Judkins were Black Dutch and it is my understanding that the black Dutch were a mixture of a lot of different Nationalities. Black dutch are also called Mulungeons ( probably not spelled right)but I have been to a web site about them and I have the URL to it, somewhere in this bermuda triangle, It may be in my old Computer. I will look for it tomorrow and send it. 3. Not sure , I only recently discoverred that Major William H.Clark-1757-1843 was the youngest brother of George Rogers Clark and was born in Shenandoah county, Virginia and buried in Hall County , Clarkesville, Ga. was named for the family. He maried Elizabeth Sevier b.1768 who died 1790. She had 4 children. Will recheck the date, but that means that Elizabeth had her first child Sarah Hawkins Clark at age 14, then Elizabeth Clark, John Clark, and Ruth Clark were born. When Elizabeth died, some reports in Sevier Family History say Sarah lived some with her Grandad Gov. John Sevier who had 17 kids - 2 wives- Sarah Hawkins and Bonny Kate Catherine Sherrill. Sarah and J.R. Wyly wer3 married in Knoxville in her Grandad Gov. Sevier's home. She also had an aunt named Sarah Hawkins Sevier in the same home- not sure about timeline overlap in the same home Sarah and Gen. James Rutherford Wyy are buried 1 grave apart in old downtown Clarkesville near the Episcopal church he and Clevelands and sons and a slave or two built for Charleston tourists. Elizabeth had 3 younger siblings. J.R. and Frances Wallace raised one of his Clark cousins. Concerning Black Dutch- I am descended from the same Pennsylvania Yowells as the Yowells in Waco and Coresicana are- Some claim Yowell- Youel- Uhl were German- others claim they were Scottish. One of the Yowells from Waco said they had German roots and had also roots in Scotland. It is not uncommon to see Scotch- Irish with German Roots. Dark Dutch was also a name sometimes used by some with darker Indian Blood. a Youel lady died this weekend here in Waco. 2. Charles A.Wyly
    3. Hello, Some Wylys have two connections to the Graves family tree and my parents were taught by W.T. Graves of Evergreen, near Stephenville. He taught in many Erath County schools and also was a real estate agent in later years. Dr. Doyle Graves was teaching in Tarleton and was Head of the Poultry Husbandry dept when I took a class or two under him in late 1940's. He and Dr. A.J. Spangler and Dr. Autrey were long time Tarleton Ag teachers. Back to earlier Graves- some of the Graves families had lived in the Barbados or Canary Islands on sugar cane plantations before coming on to the U.S. Mary Graves was born about 17444 and married Col. Ben Cleveland, Rev. WAr in North Carolina Militis. Col. Ben had a daughter named Jemima, born to a Mrs. Myers. When Jemima and her two Wyly children and Evangelist Edwards were with a group passing through Cumberland Gap, 1796, when Indians attacked and scalped Evan Eddards then injured Jemima in the head with a tomahawk. Jemima returned to NC area with 2 Wyly and 2 or 3 Edwards children. Someone told Col. Ben she was destitute. He, with Mary Grave's approval, stood and cried and Mary and Col. Ben gave her a Child's share of his land, in East Feliciana Parrish, Clinton, Louisiana- Tippah Mississipi area. She raised Edwards and Cleveland children there son James Rutherford Wyly and his sister Elizabeth stayed back in Tennessee (Once part of North Carolina). J.R. became Ga. Milia Gen. in Florida in War of 1812- leading 700 Anglo and 400 Cherokee against the English and Seminoles . Later, J.R. and a C Cleveland Cousin Gen.Ben Cleveland (Grandson of Col. Ben) and John Cleveland, Uncle of J.R. and Elizabeth, left a few volumes of testimony in Clinton, La. Probate courts,. When Jemima died, her 3 rd husband Daniel Cleveland was trying to edge Jemima's children out, but the land was secured for the best interest of the Edwards and Cleveland Children. Nweither J.R. nor Elizabeth profited from the Louisiana land. Was this ancestors of Gov. Edwards of La. who also paid cash for an Erath County Ranch a few years ago and flew back to Baton Rouge???? J.R. married Sarah Hawkins Clark, granddaughter of Gov. John Sevier- a friend of Col. Ben Cleveland in the Tennessee Governor's home. Sarah's Uncle according to some reports was the niece of the Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition . Another GRAVES - Susannah Graves was either a sister or cousin of Mary . She married part Cherokee Gen Joseph Martin, Cherokee Indian Agent. He was a very good friend of Col. Ben Cleveland . Gen Martin had 2 Anglo wives and 2 Cherokee wives.Several divorces back then which some question. He sold the Traveller's Rest In to J.R. and Sarah for Jesse Walton, a relative and Wylys sold it to the Jarrett and Lucas Families. - in Toccoa Georgia. It is on the Internet as a Georgia State Park and the 3 story Inn is in good shape today. Gen. Martin and Susannah Graves were ancestors of the line of Great Grandad Robert's brother William Clark Wyly and Amelia Starr of Tyler, Texas. William buffing ton Wyly's lineage included Rev. Jesse Bushyhead of Longhair Clan of Cherokees and of the Buffington family and were and are active in the Western Cherokee Capitol of Tahlequah, I.T. (once Oklahoma was formed.) Some of this Buffington family now lives near Bruceville- Eddy Schools . Another on that lineage is Capt. John Stuart. We could not find him in Rev. War records, then I noticed one report that he was the Colonial British Agent to the 5 Civilized Tribes before 1776. I suspect this is the same John Stuart. Confused yet? We will be driving there on I-95. If anyone would like to organize a quickie Graves family gathering between Feb. 12 and Feb. 15, in the Maryland to Georgia area, close to I-95, I would be interested. It could be an opportunity to discuss and share family histories, talk about the Graves/Greaves DNA study, or even get family members to take a DNA test on the spot. If you think you might like to try to gather together some of your relatives and perhaps people from other Graves families for an informal gathering, let me know. I need to make plans soon on when to leave cold and snowy Massachusetts. =============================================== MY PLANNED GENEALOGY TOUR OF ENGLAND THIS SUMMER Because most of the Graves, Greaves, and Grieves families of the world either live in England or originated there, it is important to learn more about them. I expect to be traveling to England (and perhaps also to Wales and Scotland) sometime this summer. The purpose of the trip will be to meet with family members there, gather as much family history as possible, and get participants in the DNA study. Many of you who live in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and other countries outside the U.K., obviously want to find which family in England you descend from. However, at least as important is to find the ancestry of the families in England and how they are related to each other. It is essential to get as many participants in the DNA study as possible in order to establish these relationships. I need the help of as many of you as possible to do two things: (1) For those of you living in the U.K., I need help in finding the best places to hold Graves/Greaves gatherings, publicizing them, getting people to attend, etc. I may need help on where to stay and how to get around. I would also appreciate advice on the best time to have this series of meetings. I don't want to schedule a gathering when everyone is on holiday. (2) Because many people who may be willing to take part in the DNA study may not be willing to pay for the test, money is needed. I am hoping that we will get 30-40 participants, and I certainly can't afford to pay for all those myself. Your generous contributions will be very much appreciated. =============================================== GRAVES/GREAVES DNA STUDY ADDITIONS TO DNA SECTION OF THE WEBSITE (1) As new DNA test results are reported, they are immediately added to the master DNA results table. We continue to get new results. (2) A new group has been added to the master table. Genealogy 336 (Peter Greaves of Greenhill, Norton, Yorkshire) and genealogy 156 (Joseph Greaves and Mary Bennett of England & SC) appear to be related. Other genealogies are almost certainly related to these families, but we do not yet have any participants from those families. (3) A chart has been added for genealogy 336, and some of the other charts have been updated. All existing charts can be viewed by clicking on the links in the genealogy column on the right side of the Master DNA results table. MORE PARTICIPANTS NEEDED If you have not yet returned your DNA samples, PLEASE do so as soon as possible. If your part of the Graves, Greaves, or other spelling, family is not yet included in the DNA study, it would be very helpful if you could either volunteer to participate (if you are a male with the Graves, etc.) surname or find someone else in your part of the family who would be willing to take part. PARTICIPANTS OUTSIDE THE U.S., ESPECIALLY IN ENGLAND It is important for families in the U.S. to have participants from England (or from families in Australia and elsewhere who know their ancestry in England) so that a link with English ancestors can be made. However, it is just as important for family members in England to take part in the DNA study so that the various families in England can be linked with each other. Tradition of connection with an ancient family is nice, but DNA proof of that connection is much more meaningful. FINANCIAL HELP STILL NEEDED All contributions toward the DNA study will be much appreciated. Many thanks to those of you who have already contributed. We especially need funding for testing of descendants in the British Isles, some of whom may be less willing or able to pay the cost. You may also want to consider sponsoring a relative as a way to get a test for your part of the family. =============================================== GFA WEBSITE A number of genealogies on the GFA website have recently been added or revised. I have been promising for many months that I will be revising the website, and adding a "members only" section and other features. I finally decided that I am not going to have enough time to do this all myself, so I have contacted a couple of web designers about doing it. You should finally start seeing some major changes in the next few months. =============================================== GRAVES/GREAVES FAMILY BOOKS All previously published books are still available. More description and ordering information is on the GFA website. The seven books published so far are: ** Robert Graves of NC & SC (a branch from Capt. Thomas Graves) ** Samuel Graves of Lynn, MA ** Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT & Hatfield, MA ** Rear Adm. Thomas Graves of Charlestown, MA ** Deacon George Graves of Hartford, CT ** Graves Families of the World ** John Graves of Concord, MA I was hoping that the book on the Graves families of Randolph Co., NC would be ready by the end of 2004. In spite of the huge amount of effort on it, it will not be finished until sometime this spring. I will let everyone know as soon as I have a definite publication date and price. =============================================== MISSING PERSON Mrs. Linda Crabtree wants to locate a distant cousin, Evelyn Rees (Mrs. Martin L. Rees), previously of Shreveport, LA. They are both descended from John Graves of Concord, MA (gen. 166). If you can help, please let me know, and I will pass the information on to Mrs. Crabtree. =============================================== ABOUT THIS BULLETIN: This bulletin is written and edited by Kenneth V. 3. I think I got those maps from the Chamber of Commerce in Stephenville, are we talking bout the ones that had all the cemeteries, marked with a cross?I have 2 of those maps, on one I take file labels and wrote the name of the cemetery on it, then took that clear plastic, you can get in rolls from Wall mart or some likely place.. I have names written in pencil on the other map, I intend to enclose it the same way. I copied the names of the cemeteries from the Hudson Cawyer books, now we are trying to get new driving directions from the intersection of 6 and 377 in Dublin, since we now have 911, the directions are not workable, unless you know the county well, right now, I have 163 entries , and have about 2 pages to go. This will be a long term project, as we will add historic notes as we find them... Since there were no names on the maps, I sat in the floor of a friends house for almost 4 days, with her and her brother telling me where each cemetery was located, and the name . It took a lot of patience and hard work, to get that. I haven't seen the new maps, but don't think they even have the cemeteries marked on them, Peggy Broughton ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peggy Broughton" <peggyj@our-town.com> To: <TXERATH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2005 1:57 PM Subject: Re: [ERATH] Pony Creek > I have a list of all the cemeteries in Erath County,, that have a name.
