    1. McCleskey Reunion
    2. McCleskey Round-Up 2005 Dear McCleskey Descendant: It's been five years since our last round-up of the descendants of early Americans James or Joseph McCleskey and we're hoping you would like to get together again. The tentative date for the one-day reunion is October 8, 2005 and although a place has not been chosen yet, we expect it will be in the central Texas area around Stephenville. This will coincide with the annual meeting October 9 at the old Rock Church nearby for those who would like to attend that, too. The committee is exploring various locations. Please reply with your answers to these questions -- and any other thoughts you have -- within a week so we can continue planning for a successful "round up" of all the McCleskey cousins. 1. Would you plan to attend on October 8? 2. How many people from your family would attend? 3. Are you in favor of a potluck luncheon? 4. Would you be staying in a motel? Also, we are anxious to hear your ideas and preferences relating to the reunion -- please submit your suggestions to the committee. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, Margaret McCleskey Dolores Reed Bob and Linda Williams This includes any family connected to the McCleskeys. Some of these families are Kiker, York, Adams, Ingley, Jackson. To be added to the mailing list, send your name and address to Dolores Reed Djwreed@aol.com

    3. Hello Clyde Thanks for answering my email. My Russells and Doty also came from Missouri. Harlin Doty had a 1st wife named Sara Clinkingbeard, they had a lot of children and lived in Mo.. I think it was one his children that married an Edmonds. Her name was Martha ? Edmonds. I took a picture of her and her husbands stones. She was the mother of one of our neighbors by the name of Newton Edmonds. He said she was a sister to my husbands Grandmother, Dora Clark. Dora's father died in Monitau County Mo. in a water well accident. Dora's mother and father were married in Laclede County MO. Anyway it was worth a try. Thank you very much for your answer and good luck on finding your ancestors Callie ----- Original Message ----- From: "edmonds" <edmonds01@bresnan.net> To: <TXERATH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 2:51 PM Subject: Re: [ERATH] Off Topic > Hi Calliet , > Probably not. 3. Well we have quite a discussion going on here. My Grandfather Carvin was very proud to be Scotch-Irish. When I was a teenager back in the 1960s, someone rudely scolded my Grandmother Carvin by telling her it was Scots-Irish, not Scotch-Irish. And that Scotch was a drink! I say rudely because she was so embarrassed, the term Scots-Irish stuck with her. My Grandfather maintained firmly that he was Scotch-Irish. The RootsWeb mailing list is for Scotch-Irish. And the list owner had a discussion about how Scotch-Irish is the correct American term a year ago. "If all else fails, I will retreat up the valley of Virginia, plant my flag on the Blue Ridge, rally around the Scotch-Irish of that region, and make my last stand for liberty amongst a people who will never submit to British tyranny whilst there is a man left to draw a trigger. George Washington, at Valley Forge."BTW this is where we live. "There has been some controversy as to the term, "Scotch-Irish." The term "Scotch-Irish" supposedly originated in mid-eighteenth century America to distinguish the Ulster Presbyterian emigrants of Scottish ancestry from other Irish settlers in the colonies. But the first to use the term, Scotch-Irish, was Queen Elizabeth as far back as 1573 when in a manifesto she said "....We are given to understand that a nobleman names "Sorley Boy," and others, who be of the Scotch-Irish race, and some of the wild Irish, at this time are content to acknowledge our true and mere right to the country of Ulster and the Crown of Ireland...." "In America the first to use the term was by Sir Thomas Laurence Secretary of Maryland when in June of 1695, he said; "In the counties of Dorchester and Somerest, where the Scotch-Irish are numerous, they clothe themselves by their linen and woolen manufactures." "And an Anglican minister named George Ross wrote in 1753: "They call themselves Scotch-Irish, and are the bitterest railers against the Church of England that ever trod on American ground."For almost a hundred years the term seems to have disappeared, until the influx of the Catholic Irish during the potato famine of 1845-46. "In order to distinguish themselves and their ancestors for the newly arriving Catholic Irish they revived the rarely used term of Scotch-Irish and it stuck.
