Hi Charles This is very interesting. I hope you are saving all these letters you write to the list and put them in a book for your children and grandchildren or donate them to the genealogy section at the library. They are very interesting stories even to someone who isn't related. I am amazed at how you remember all this stuff. Hi, By any chance are you related to the (G>M>)?) Carlton store owners of Stephenville, ? I have a photo opf some of mom's and Dad's age group standing by one of these signs, appx. 1920's. Also, any connection to the Carlton community namesakes outside Dublin or Hico? Also, my Aunt Mary Ella Wyly was a Captain in Army Nurse Corps in WW2 in 6 Combat zones and the hospital set up in New Billibib Prison overlooking Manilla. She was also on the shipping list for the invasion of Japan, before the Atomic Bomb was dropped. She was also in Australia. She is now 91 years of age and in William R. Courtney Texas State Veteran's Land Board Home in Temple, Texas and uses the Scot & White Hospital. the First Texas State Land Board home was built in Floresville, Texas after the Civil War. We now have 4 and, thanks to a recent election , 4 or 5 more are in the State plans to be built with State Land Board Financing. Aunt Mary's grandad Robert Augustine Wyly was born in Georgia and was at Civil War Battle of Shiloh, a 13 year old Drummer Boy- turning soldier. One of his 22 siblings, Capt. James Allen Wyly, was injured and disabled and returned to his farm and tannery very bitter, he went out to his field and buried his officer's sword. Great Grandad Robert and his brother Bill- Bill- William Sevier Wylyrode a saddle horse with the 36 wagon train from Wyly Cotton Yard and Mercantile 4 story Brick in Atlanta, to Erath County, Texas where over half of his siblings came to. Augustine Clayton Wyly was his Uncle and Augustine and Ben Franklin Wyly ran the Wholesale house and cotton yard and farms from Gordon, Cass, habersham, and other Georgia Counties. A.C. and a Edmiston cousin were in Liverpool, England during Civil War for supplies when the Liverpool shipyards were building Confederate Battleships. One was sunk by U.S. Navy in Liverpool Harbor , definitely in British territory. Ben is buried in Comanche County, Texas Augustine lost two young daughters to Diptheria in Liverpool -Mary Troup Wyly and sister and today there is a newly dedicated Confederate memorial Trail where over 40 Americans are buried , including the two Wylys. Guides are available to the trail and shipyards . I can send you more on this from a Bob Jones of Liverpool who has researched and helped develop the trail and, as a retiree, he plays in a Senior Citizens Band to raise money to maintain the trail. If headstones begin to lean, they must be straightened or the British will lay them on the ground for safety. Great Grandad Robert died when i was 8 years old- he was 91, 1937 and when his wife Ella Hatchett died, he married Fronea McGee and then moved to Hico, then to Tulsa,Ok. where they died of Typhoid. In 1936 he had dedicated to Tulsa Tomb to the Unknown Soldier in one of the Morer's Funeral home and cemetery parks. he said that after all that horseback riding in Civil War and from Atlanta to Stephenville, he was saddle sore and didn't care if he ever saw Atlanta again. He had cousins in Tulsa- intermarried leaders of Western Cherokee Nation and still prominent there. There were at least 3 Wagons in the train owned by Black married men who carried the Wyly name and brought their wives and kids in wagons they personally paid for , as well as the horses and neeeds for the trip. They left the Wagon Train between Hico and Stephenville and started a crossroads community near Lubbock. The Texas State Veterans homes are open to any retired or disabled Veteran, their spouses, and Gold Star Mothers (Those who lost a child overseas). If one is on full disability and Aids and Attendants (Not Medicaid) they may have up to $50,000.00 in savings and gain money each month after all expenses are paid. Partially disabled have to pay some- and some drive their car or Wheel Chair to Temple Mall . Contact the Manager of the homes in Temple, Bonham, Big Spring, or Floresville and visit in person and follow his instructions for quick Admission. You can see and read about them through a Google search. It takes much longer to do it all by computer or through the U.S. Veterans Administration. To avoid confusion, it is important to note that McElhaney (with an "e") family of my interest is not to be confused with the family that spelled its name McIlhaney (with an "i") Margaret
I am looking for anyone with information on the following men each of whom was married to Willie Lee McElhaney: Thomas B. Davis, m. 20 April 1892 W. H. Langston, m. 9 January 1899 Riggs T. Roberts, m. 30 December 1903 David Monroe Benson, m. aft. 20 April 1910. Willis Lee and Mr. Roberts are listed on the 1910 census for Erath County. Living with them was Mr. Roberts' son, Kyle, age 14. In 1900, a widowed Mr. Roberts was living as a lodger in the household of W. A. Dawson in Stephenville. His son, who would have been 4 at the time is not listed with him. So far, I have been unable to find any information about the other men. Margaret McCleskey, Arlington, Texas
If you go to Rootsweb home page and put in Riggs Roberts it will bring up a page by Randal Farrer and it lists his parents as John Kyle Rioberts and Julia Rebecca Dupuy and has his 2nd wife listed as Willie I McElbanly. Michaellann
Not to my knowledge. He was born in 1911 after the family moved to a farm near Morgan Mill. By 1930 most of the family had moved to California. Except for one of Wilty's aunts, Willie Lee McElhaney, I have found no record of any of this family ever living in Stephenville. In 1910, Willie Lee was married to Riggs T. Roberts and lived on Race Street. Hi Callie, I do have some distant cousins in AZ but I don't know what their names are. My grandmother died at 98 and had many many great great grandchildren. After my 1st cousins I was not too many of my family. We lived here an all the others were scattered into other states and I just did not know or keep up with them. I have a nephew Randy in OKC but I don't think we have a girl named Patsy. You might ask her if she knows William and Mertie Gibson, Akers who lived and died in Fletcher, OK. Randy would be related to them if at all. Hello Margaret. My Akers family was in Wise County in and around Chico. Their names were Hugh Henry and Mary Catherine Netherland, Akers. Their children were my grandfather William Oscar 1875, Anne Terrill, Flora Susan, Rose Lee, and Hugh Price. They were there from 1873 until 1893. They left Troy, Lincoln County, MO in 1871 for "The Wilderness" in Wise County, TX. They were buried in Dougherty, OK in 1924 and 1926.He was a Methodist Minister of the Church that still stands here in Dougherty. These are the only Akers I have that were in TX. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <mygen@att.net> > To: <TXERATH-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 10:17 AM > Subject: Re: [ERATH] Hello, I am new. > > > > Armenta, > > > > I have two Akers in my data base: > > > > Dorothy Akers married Wilty McElhaney who was born in Erath County. Hello Mr. Wyly, Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston was born in Kentucky in 1803. He was a graduate of West Point. Moved to Texas in 1836 and was in the Texas Army. He entered the Confederacy in 1861 and was killed at Shiloh. He was buried for a while in New Orleans, but the Texas State Legislature requested and was granted to move his remains to the state cemetery in Austin. The noted Sculptor, Elisabet Ney, designed a beautiful stone monument in 1905. I am not sure who his children and/or siblings. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
