Hello, Is there any history or work on the early families in the County? Is there a library there with genealogy look up? My grandfather Rufus Murray Taylor was born in Dublin in 1900 His family is in the Erath Co. Stephenville census for 1900 and before. They left for Oklahoma in 1900 or 1901. My great grandfather was Andrew Jackson Taylor. Looks like he went by A.J. Taylor. His wife was Ella May Miller, I think for the Eastland area. Any ideas links or help of any kind would be great! Nan nanzell@aol.com
Dave Garner lived at Selden and son James marred my first cousin Imogene Carey. James worked for Erath County REA Their son Jim Garner lives in Garland and works - or worked- at the old Chance- Vought Aircraft plant in Gramd Prairie and Imogene sold the Selden Hatchett farm to David Carey. His family also runs THE CORN POPPER in Garland, which employs over 20 people in sales, catering parties, or whatever. Dave Garner bought the Selden 4 line Party telephone lines and switchboard from John Kay, who married Ida Minerva Wyly in Georgia, and John was the first store owner in Selden, across from them. Tom Payne, Ida's brother in law, was the first postmaster and ran the Kay store until it was sold out to Tom Hatchett and Vea Cornett Hatchett. <Some of the above group are buried in Selden ( Hatchett) Cemetery near the Duffau Creek , in former Wyly Brothers Dairy. James Garner's sister was partially physically handicapped and ran the Seden Switchboard where parties on one line called her to switch them to another line- Each wall phone had a combination of long and short rings, or cranks of the Ringer, for a number. Neighbors learned the numbers, and if a neighbor was called and didn't answer, a neighbor would pick up and report the location of the one being called, if they could see him plowing- or gone to town. One line went in To Stephenville. Johnsville and Fairy had some early phone lines, but the Selden one was reported to be earlier than Stephenville phones. Johnsville phone lines may have joined Selden befor emy time, across David Carey's or Johnson Ranch land, Some telephonme insulators canh still be found on fence posts or buildings. No full time maintenance- just subscribers came to do necessary line work. If I am not mistaken, once in the early 1940's my Aunt Capt. Mary E. Wyly, Army Nurse Coprps, , called them once from Australia. This would have made more sense to me if someone in Stephenville called Grandparents to come to Stephenville at a given time and she would call back from Australia, before she left for 2 battle zones in New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon, Manilla and others. She was on the shipping list to go to the Invasion of Japan before the Atomic Bomb made her trip unnecessary. Grandpa had limited hearing due to Typhoid Fever when 12. Dr. Nell Garner, Jimmy Garner's sister, dau. of Mom's Niece, Imogene, now teaches at Baylor School of Medicine in Dallas. She left Stephenville with Dr. Naylor's Daughter for a term as a Medical Missionary in India. Jame's brother included Wayne and Milton Garner. Others have confirmed that other Garners, connection not known, owned a ranch past the Country Club Lake and on the west side of 281.Stephenville Country Club lake , on the East side of Hwy 281was about half way to the park my family called the Garner Lake. Didn't think Stephenville owned 3 Parks- two well outside the city limits. The Erath County Garner Lake and stone shelters and paved picnic area across the lake from 281 , and the Dam was built by PWA or WPA or CCC- (Works Project Administration or Civilian Conservation Corps) Not sure, but the NYA (NYA) may have also played a role . Aren't some Garners buried in Hightower Cemetery??? Before the park closed past Country Club Lake, it had developed to what some Churchgoers considerred a evil place for Erath County kids to stop coming from Mingus or Mineral Wells. Some wanted Erath County Commisioners or City Council or anyone they thought had influence to close it. Either the PWA or The WPA was declared unconstitutional and it was reorganized under a different name after Roosevelt had followed Hoover's plans left in the Capitol in organized boxes to add some judges to the Supreme Court who would be more favorable. Hoover had tried going that direction but the Supreme Court stopped him at every turn and his term ran out. ( That's what the Big Boys told me .) I was told in Erath County Schools that " It Does not matter who gets the credit as long as one does the right thing". Many Politicians do not live by that code of ethics in any party. The NYA also built the nearest building to I-35 in Waco University High School, and it was used by soldiers at the beginning of the war to train soldiers in certain Technologies. I have substituted as a teacher there in various classes and ISS and seen the letters in the floor on Marble of the NYC or NYA. Johnsville, at about the time of the Federal Programs had turned one Hat and Cloakroom- or mud room today, into a hot lunch kitchen, run by Teacher Aide Cloye Little Sherrod .Our outhouses were separate buildings from the Cloak Rooms and the classrooms. . . Marshall was teaching upper grades and Math and Today, the Jr High where Marshal retired as Principal in Grand Prairie carries his name. I just had a direct inquiry from a descendant of John Crockett's brother, who also rode with Quantrill. John settled in Pony Creek before leaving with his daughter and son in law , a Beach boy from Pony Creek. They went to Quannah, Texas, where some, but not all, say he is buried. His headstone is in Quannah, bit one legend says he was found nearer Paris, Texas shot in his blanket by cowboys on a trail drive whose boss would not hire him. . This one wanted to know of his connection of the Selden and Stephenville Crocketts. I do not have that. Do you? Me, too, but even Greens Creek goes dry enough to stop running above Hico on bad years, but deep pools are left. The Bosque has gone bone dry a few times in my life above Iredell 2where the Dinosaur tracks are on private land. - or above the Junction with he East Bosque near Jackson's hole and crossing. The lake on Greens Creek and several more Erath county dams have slowed the Bosque flooding. Charles. Charles I would presume colleges that teach weather, meterology, would teach this,,,,,,,,but we do have a think tank that does nothing but study this along with global warming,,,,and reports this to the president,,,,,,we have known since the 60's that we were warming up due to added environmental agents that we are producing. And we also know that the earth will shift it axis, that plates move resulting in earthquakes. We also know that the northwest has a potential of a major tsaumi. We spend millions each year studying the earth. That this is affecting our weather. Eva ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles A. John, I brought this to the list's attention some weeks ago and got no response. Last year, the Erath County Genealogical Society had a sign up list for pledges to save access to TEXSHARE. I am willing to pledge again. Margaret McCleskey, Arlington, Texas -------------- Original message from "John A. Hi, Rick, and all Txerath -l members should know about Krakatoa or Krakatau Volconano erupting in 1887, which was heard in Erath County, Texas. The one you asked about- I have never heard the 1816 disaster discussed in any History classes, even in Tarleton, Abilene Christian, or University of North Texas through 2 degrees and a 12 hour start on the third, It seems that we fail to overlook reasons that people moved south and West and try to blame it on politics . I would have moved too. As you know, there were tremors in Choctaw Country which they took as a sign from The Great Spirit to no longer live back east. They moved to North Alabama area near Cherokee land. The earth tremors caused the Mississippi to flow backwards past Memphis for 3 days, and was followed by thousands of trees causing a log jam in the Mississippi, which caused the Cane River to become a river port at Natchitoches for enterring Texas through Nacodoches. Natchitoches, La. was a safer port. Only Flat bottom boats could use the Mississippi until surplus Civil War Ammo and explosives were used to blast the log jams out This was the death of the town oif Jefferson, Texas when the Caddo lake dropped severl feet. There is now a long low Levee or dam between the Red River and the Caddo Lake. To find more go to Google search window and type in "The year without a summer", 1816 Volcano ". It also lists some other eruptions before 1816 which already had a lot of polution and ash in the air. St. Vincent, Manilla, and Luzon preceeded the 1816 disaster and the 1816 one dumped 180 tons of ash and cinders into our air. I only checked the first 10 of a few thousand sites Google found on the 1816 Volcano. WHY HASN'T SOME COLLEGE STARTED A COURSE ON RELATIONSHIP OF WEATHER CHANGES AND vOLCANO ERUPTIONS TO MIGRATION PATTERNS AROUND THE WORLD??? Most Amazon sites on Google say Books on 1816 Eruption in Indonesia are sold out or out of print. Who knows, maybe stories about why people left their homes back east had more to do with weather than supposed family or community strife or political reasons. match the timelines of the eruptions and weather changes to historic events and migrations , then wonder why these are not mentioned in most History courses.
