    3. My hearing must be bad- Who asked what about Sonny Boy Roberts? and the next message from HJOY- message page was blank. I faintly remember some of the Roberts of Stephenville and Mattie Roberts Somerville of West Monroe, La. was a Wyly descendant and DAR officer and Pres. of Natchitoches, La. Also, I am descended from a Roberts- Grandmother of Great Grandad Dr.W.P.. Hatchett was Jane Roberts, born 1758 in Virginia. Several Roberts families had Hardshell Baptist Roots and some were lay preachers across the Brazos - see Bosque County Primitive Baptist History in a Googloe Window. mattie left me a 2 or 3 inch stack of Roberts research and she told her husband before she died that she now believed that she could connect dots to Brushy Bill Roberts of Hico. The Roberts wo came from West Virginia to Natchitoches, La. by hs own homemade 3 room raft , came on to Stephenville- not far from where jane Roberts was born. Will work on these records more after I shake this Bacterial Bronchitis and get Jeannie over it. WARNING- with one form if one waits 72 hours to se a Doctor, that might be 36 hours too long, if it progresses into the lungs. 3. There is a back corner of West End Cemetery which is overlooked by some amateurs searching for graves. Wasn't it partly used for county pauper burials- may have been one in East End Cemetery which was also not well marked. Commercial mowers sometimes "Loose " field stone meant to be a headstone, usually scratched with a nail or chisel. easier to mow where it was than around it or ruining a mower blade on one in tall grass. Sometimes such graves need levelling. I understand metal detectors and sometimes "Witching" or dowsing with 2 metal rods or a fork of peachtree limb will dip over a grave- or the rods will cross. This was shoiwn one night on TV, and some graves were found. Of course, there are many cemeteries within 15 miles of Stephenville. Remember Dan White and nephew Robert Bagwell who robbed Crockett Ross at his service station near Tarleton on Dublin Hwy? Dan trained Robert , a teenager to run in and rob with a gun and get money and run out to the car he was driving. Problem was, Crocket Ross did not think like McDonald's management of today and resisted. A Selden pastor and Seminary Student was holding Jail services in Stephenville after Dan was given the death sentence. Dan was converted with no thought of appeal- he said he was responsible for Robert's actions and knew he deserved his sentence, but he asked to be baptized. The Selden Church accepted him as a member and the pastor baptized Dan in the baptistry of Stephenville First Baptist. He was executed at Huntsville. Where was he buried? If I made a mistake on a name, please tell me. 3. Still is a Thurber Lake- Fort Worth Sportsman Club owns land near it - possibly lake is on their property. The lake supplied Locomotive and Steam engines around the coal mines. Some have held Family Reunions there- behind the operating Cafe on New York Hill- also a historic site. Lake Cisco & below the dam was - is a popular site for picnics and reunions. The rows of simple cabins on South of I-20 towards Huckaby cutoff from New York Hill was once owned by Rev. Frank Jordan of California and Non Denominational Churches. One set of missionaries went there to live in primitive conditions as Missionary Training for overseas conditions. . Last group I have heard of who lived there were youth- some married & with kids, wh were supposed to get Drug Therapy there. The leader was a Mr. Berg, , now in England and looked up to as a prophet. When at Thurber, their school kids attended Huckaby School. Moms and dads and singles would take a worn school bus to Fort Worth for street missionary work and direct fundraising (?) for the group. They left and bought a 2 or 3 story Building near the entrance to Dallas State Fair gates, where they lived and recruited. The California Churches had cut ties with them during or after the Thurber camp activities. 3. Go to Rootsweb.com archives of Txerath site. The Erath County Poor Farm has been discussed here over the last 10 years. Best I remember it was off Hwy 183 on the right past the RR overpass. It is now either part of the Texas A&M Experiment Farm. or the Tarleton Farm. Wasn't Tarleton College dairy and experiment farm on left of 218 north and east of Huckaby Highway- Graham Street. We used to ride Tarleton busses to the College farm to study cattle judging with Dr. Reed and others as part of our classroom work. The farm once supplied all milk Tarleton used. later Payton Frakes Dairy provided it all- possibly on a State Bid. Payton name was same as Pattons from Patton, Texas between Valley Mills and Crawford. . The Poor farm was for elderly without other income or property opr visible legal means of support. . Texas paid Civil War Vets pension, - I have some of Great Grandad Moxley's envelopes containing his check, with the Confederate St. Anthony's Cross- Stars and Bars flag next to the U.S. postage stamp. Those who lived there were expected to work as much as able, like picking the garden or seeing after chickens and eggs or picking fruit. County Deputies were assinged prisoner Work Details to wwork on the Poor Farm. Can't remember the exact story, but once some prisoners refused to do farm work on the County Poor Farm, and some Deputy handcuffed one to a tree limb on tiptoes while the others worked some. 3. CORRECTION- I listed Imogene as a Carey- we had the same grandmother- our moms were sisters. Actually she was the daughter of Tom Hatchett and Ada Carey- Imogene HatchettTom had a type of emphosema from WW1 Pneumonia in Army. He drove truck and hauled soldiers to Galveston troop ships , sick in until the Flu brouht him down. Some were kept in pup tents in Galveston and given medicine there. he recoverred enough to do farm work in field, garden, and livestock, but would have to stop and heave at times. Similar to Dad's Asthma. Most of the Carey sisters and brothers of mom had Smallpox and missed almost a year of school- The pockets were as large as a finger- and as long. If they turned in Bed and burst one, others would form from the puss touching the clean skin. All survived, but some dropped out- in 1918 it was not considerred necessary for farm girls to finish 11 years of school and graduate or test out. Dad roomed with Virgil Underwood in the home where Charlie Neblitt was born. he finished Tarleton and taught one year at Harmony, near , near Meridian. he had studied Spanish but Harmony first Graders spoke one or 2 languages- Norwegian or German. he left theaching and started farming. Mom kept all the books and figured the income tax and he would help on some instructions. Virgil became a well known Vocational Ag teacher. What a change- are you familiar with handwriting not being taught any more? I have a granddaughter who has a scholarship to Texas A&M next year and she nor her sisters can read script writing or do it- they print. The kleyboard has taken over. 3. Mr. Wyly, do you know any thing about a paupers cemetery or poor farm that was in Erath county, It probably would have been around the turn of the century. 2. Charles, You are correct on the name change but in order to change it had to go to the Texas Legislature, I think. Tyler

    3. Yes,,,,now I remember,,,,,,it was part of the Collier Ranch. They have since,,,,,,taken some of their land and developed it into small acreage sites for homes,,,,,,but I have wondered what they did with the lake,,,,,,I have a vague memory of us going there when I was a child. 2. The Lake located about 10 miles north of Stephenville on Hwy. 281 was built by the state as a public works project. The land belonged to John B. Collier, and he gave the land to the State to be used as a park. It was named Garner State Park and was later changed to Stephenville State Park by Special Legislation. The land was to be returned back to the original owner if it ever ceased to be used as a park. It is my understanding it finally was returned back to the Collier Estate due to very much problems of Questionable parties. My wife and I (before Marriage),would use it as our (Pitching WOO). It was a very good place until the roughhousing began. Tyler Pryor

    3. Thanks, Tyler, Will check, but I think the name was changed due to the south Texas Garner State P:ark. Was this Stephenville park one place where boys from Mingus area used to meet Boys from Glen Rose and have a few fights. Glen Rose was once wet, like Mingus, but more famous for Moonshine made there in National Prohibition era and after and deliverred to Dallas and other Speakeasies. West , McLennan County Czech and German" Whiskey Holler" moonshiners also delivered to Dallas in dummy gas tanks under the car or pickup. The $60.00 per gallon profit in dodging Federal Taxes was not unknown, but a local Jury would not ususlly convict them. No one wanter to feed their kin or the county feed them while their dads were on 10 year "Business Trips " To Huntsville. Federal Liquor Copntrol didn't let that bother them. Sopme in West had Roots in Company homes in Thurber and came from Europe to Erath County, paid by TP Coal and Oil.
