I've sent your question to my mother, Linda Herring. Besides being an Erath County decendent, she is a school teacher and was just telling me the other day that she has a ton of Texas History stuff she is bringing home from school. She is retiring after this year (in 4 days!) and is cleaning out her classroom. "The Trail Drivers of Texas" There is just a small line mentioning other good cowboys in a story by Fred Sutton of Oklahoma City called the Chisholm Trail, F.E. Herring of Elk City is mentioned. Thanks... wondering if there was any Herring or Hightowers listed in that book? dh
Is there anyone with the name of Jim Haile?
There is also a book called "The Trail Drivers of Texas" originally published in 1924. It is a fascinating compilation of oral histories from about 300 Early cowboys. It was re-published by the University of Texas in 1996 and can be found in most book stores. I checked but there wasn't a Huckabee in the index. Tami Ramsey Dublin, VA
No, those names are not familiar to me, but there are so many Thorntons that there are lots of them I don't know!! LOL I'm not sure when my grandmother's family left Stephenville, but I know they went to Lamb County (Littlefield) and set up shop there. My great grandparents owned the Thorton Cafe there. During the depression,,,,,the govt gave out grants to artists,,,,,writers, etc to go and write stories about their local area. One of these writers was Angie DeBoe who wrote about the indians in Oklahoma. It's her books that we all now read telling the history of the Indians from the east coast to the settlement of Oklahoma. I also found other stories about Texas,,,but this was years ago that I read them,,,,,it would be worth looking them up again. The govt has all these stories written by their grantees. eva
Tyler, I would love to hear any of Pappy's (Avery Huckabee) stories that you can recall. He was a facinating man to me. He died about 4 yrs after my husband and I married but we visited him several times and the last time he was about 85 yrs old. When we arrived we couldn't find him and we called out to him.. and he answered.. and we just kept calling and following his voice.. finally found him on the roof of his house making a repair... He was an amazing man. dh
Hi, Ever hear of MILES THORNTON? He was retired from Texas Highway Patrol early and was head Coach of football and Basketball at Walnut Springs High Schol. They had outstanding teams and his son GLEN and 3 McCARTY'S got football scholarships to College. Glen graduated when I was Principal and he was in the group we carried on a Senior Trip. Miles remarried to the daughter of a Dr. Calhoun- wANDA, Who had inherited her dad's Calhoun Ranch where there were Indian Burial grounds on top of one mountain and another Indian Burial Grounds in a valley nearby. also. JENNA THORNTON was a sophomore in Stephenvolle High and lived with parents in Chalk Mountain- Plainview area on their ranch near Moore families. I was a Senior that year, and they had a scotch- irish famil;y party with ring games for all ages, mostly single, while parents sat under trees and made ice creasm, then we all ate together and listened to Country folk band music played by rural amateur musicians. We rode the same cus, and she had a 1 or mote bus ride. Oscar Parham owned his School bus and contracted to Stephenville High for student transportation. He ran about 100 miles a day, and between Runs he worked at Stephenville International Harvester tractor and truck House. MR. PARHAM WAS RAISED in Chalk mountain and knew about the cavern entrance which was filled in by locals who were tired of loosing hounds who chased Bobcats into it. The part visible today has rock overhand which would be dry shelter for a few hundred sheep."Bull"ADAMS, a retired Rhodes Scholar, also found 4 indian burials under one overhang of hill creek. this was where homer Stephen's uncle lived when he ran the ox cart supplies from Waco to Fort Graham and Fort Griffin . dh, I used to live in Morgan Mill and knew Avry very well, although I was much younger. I have been on hunting trips with him in south Texas. He sure did have some good stories. Tyler Pryor
My late husband's grandparents were William Avery "Pappy" Huckabee b. 1875 AL, d. 1962 Morgan Mill, Erath Co. Tx., married Lamora Elizabeth Herring, daughter of Mark Herring and Malissa Francis Hightower. All of these were early settlers of Morgan Mill area. I have heard many stories about them, and would love to hear more stories. What I really want to find is a book that was probably written in the late 1950's about 'old time cowboys'. A young man came to Ft. Worth, Texas and interviewd "Pappy" Huckabee about his life as a real cowboy as a young man before and about the turn of the century ( late 1800's and early 1900's). I was there when the young man came for the interview but I didn't get his name or who he was from. And I did not hear the interview. If anyone knows the name of the book etc, I would be ever so grateful to know this and where I can get a copy. I have heard that "Pappy" actually was on trail drives on the Chisholm and Goodnight trails. I would like to have this story for our grandchildren and no one in the family seems to know who it was that was writing the story. Thanks for any help... dh

JoRtta, Tracing my tree if find I am of the Nicholas Pryor and I think The was related. Tyler Pryor
The surname Pryor, could they have ancestor's in Vernon County Missouri in the 1860 or 1870 time frame? My husbands great grandmother was Mary Agnes Pryor whose father was Daniel Pryor. JoRetta
Pat Pryor is our family Doctor in White Rock Clinic in Woodway. his wife was Pres. of Midway School board in the past. I left his Secretary an E mail from you. Not sure he got it. Concerning Sonny Boy, he was a living legend when we played pool in Stephenville or Hico. He was sometimes present- but not often enough to keep Winos from drinking Vanilla Flavoring or Cardui or Percy Medicine before they passed out around the corner from Majestic Theatre. I still think he did amateur boxing and later became a deputy- not the one who became the judge. Also, who was the man who Ross Wolfe paroled out of Huntsville Prison to be his mechanic in the Nursery shop? In the 1940's several of us teenagers who worked part time at Nursery on winter breaks, used to stop in nursery or fields for lunch. When we did, we heard the mechanic crank his souped up V8 and drag out to Jake and Dorothy's or the Onyx or the Ace Cafe. He made thje corner by Tarleton Monument around 60 mph and took a minute oir so to get actross town. he was paroled because of the WW2 extreme shortage of mechanics- many overseas. The man was a Master Mechanic- but National Speed limit was 45 mph, which was enough for those bootleg cheap retreads and mexican parts and booted tires. So far as I know, the mechanic lived a respectable life and kept his nose clean otherwise.
