    1. [ERATH] Civil War Soldiers System (CSSS)
    2. Tim Seawolf Self
    3. Reposted From: [WESTERN]-List TO: TXERATH-List Hi all: Just read that a new database is being prepared jointly by the Church and the National Park Service, called the Civil War Soldiers System (CWSS). This project will eventually hold approximately 3.5 million names of Union and Confederate soldiers including their rank and regiment. With cross-referencing and alternate spelling there will be approx. 5.5 million names total. The project is slated to be completed sometime in late 1999. It is about 60% completed with some 231,000 names of the "U.S. Colored Troops" already up and running. The records may also, in some instances, contain such information as campaign summaries, cemetery records, prisoner of war records, engagements and monuments. It will be availabe when completed at all National Park Civil War historic sites, other libraries and repositories, including the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. This invaluable work can assist those researching CW veterans in identifying name, rank and regiment. Researchers will still need to send for original records in Washington, D.C., but this could be the key to unlocking unknown information. You can watch the NPS page as they continue to build it at: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ I know I will be checking it out! Hope this information helps those of you out there looking for CW soldiers. Isn't it wonderful when technology is used for such worthwhile and exciting things! Glenys -- >>Glenys Rasmussen<<
