    2. MS DEBORAH L WOOLF
    3. Kay, I missed your original post but I have a collateral connection to BRUMBELOW/BRUMBELOS. One of my great uncles, ie. Chana MULLINS md. Leucy KEITH whose mother was a BRUMBELO. I have several generations back on the BRUMBELOs and from memory they came from TN. BTW,the name Chana can be traced back to Chana BRIGGS who came from SC. Many of his descenants carry the name as a 1st or 2nd name.. ..so if it appears in your tree anywhere, esp. if you're from Erath Co. let me know.....we probably have a connection. COOKS are also related, Chana's sister Sarah Eliz. MULLINS md. into the COOK family. I can dig this up if anyone has an interest. Her first husband died and she later md. HEIDLEBERG. While I'm tossing out family connections two of the MULLINS md. BRAMBLETTs from this area. Great granpa William Henry "Willie" MULLINS md.Sarah Parthenia ADKISSON whose surname often shows "N" instead of an "S", and "T" instead of "D".....Sarah's parents and several sibs are buried at Old Dublin and Dublin Cem.'s Am I getting close yet to anyone? <G> DEBBIE

    3. Still can't find Bertha Arnold's family on computer, but think she wasa Higdon before marriage. Dolly and Ross Higdon and the Arnolds used to come out on weekends from Dallas and help Aunt Susie Moxley. Great Grandad had Arnold grandkids somewhere down the tree- not Arendells. One Arendell would have been their uncle. Concerning the Marks family, guess you knew Dr. Marks of Marks- English Hospital in Glen Rose, Texas, 1960's About Cook families- two Cook Brothers, barbers, in Glen Rose, bought a load of lumber so a driver-owner could repair his truck and go home. Out of this grew the Cook Brothers Lumber and Building supply in Stephenville. Bud Cook lived or lives in a climate control allergy free home by Dr. W.P.Hatchett's 1900 2 story mansion, restored by Bud Cook. His daughter married my second cousin David Carey, who lives on next farm south and owns from there east to Duffau Creek, where 3 to 5 families used to live. David's son finished High school last year and is working in Stephenville now. David's wife's sister, (a Cook) married James Nolan of Selden. Will check back if I can straighten out the Arnolds, but they were Great Grandad George Milton Moxley's descendants, and separate from Arendells, unless you know something I don't. See you later if I find details Charles Wyly On Wed, 05 Aug 1998 08:46:09 -0500 Mike & JoAnn Brown <mikeb@dfw.net> writes: >I am searching the surnames of >Mefford,Arendell,Bolling,Manahan,Marks,& >Cook. >I have alot of information on the Meffords & Bollings.I really need >help >on the Arendell, Marks,Cook & Manahan families. All of these families >lived in Erath County, some as far back as 1850. > I would be more than willing to share my information with others. > I am also seeking information on the Davis,Sanders & Lott families of >Erath & Bosque Counties. > Any information on any of these families would be greatly >appericated. > Thank you, > JoAnn > > _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. I believe it was Salmon Brothers who ran a store- groceries and or dry goods in Hico, Hamilton County, Texas when my parents used to grimd feed and shop in Hico. Not sure about Stephenville. Seema they had Duffau, Erath County Roots- that was the first train station in Erath County south of Thurber up on I-20 West- Okd U.S.80, The Bankhead Highway, or Lancaster Avenue section in Fort Worth was called The Great White Way . Aman in a business in Arcadia, La. told me 3 years ago that his cousins lived in Duffau and Hico, Texas. he claims the town is named by a group of Germans in a wagon train from Hico and Arcadia and Lake Hico, La. The operator of the Hico Billy the Kid museum claims it was named for Hico, Kentucky. I can find Hico, La. on the map but not Hico, Ky. There was once one. Perhaps they left Kentucky, stopped north of Arcadia, and did not like the Black- French and Indian intermarriage of those who were already there. The Ku Klux Klan has shown up in Hico, Texas and Arcadia, La. and Kentucky. I asked the man if Clyde Barrow, who had Hico connections and used to camp out on Bosque and Duffau Creekas a kid, if Clyde and Bonnie might have been hunting kin when killed at Arcadia, La. He smiled and said no more. Guess you saw the one about John Wilkes Booth recoverring from a badly infected leg in a cabin still standing between Hico and Iredell, then tending Bar in Granbury, as Jesse James supposedly did. Booth died in Enid, Oklahoma Grand Hotel with TB or similar and an overdose of pain medicine. His dental records matched, according to Enid folk. This was on Unsolved Mysteries on TV but I heard it several years before that. Booth was redheaded. The soldiers who buried a man in his grave back east stated the man they buried was not red headed. He came to Hico with help of a friend hunting Dr. McNeil. A Dr. Mcneil was in Stephenville. His grandaughter Daisy married one of mom's Stone cousins and they shared a Rest home Room together a few years ago. Dr. Mcneil had problems of doing surgery on stray Stephenville Boars found in his garden, much to the shagrin of the hog owners. Confused yet"?? No telling what stories the first Salmon Brothers in Hico knew. Loretta is supposed to have died on October 22, 1875 in Erath County, during childbirth. She had 8 other children before her death. For over 20 years, I have been looking in Erath County for any grave for her. Can someone help me to locate her grave?

    3. ......dad knew a Roy Mefford in Erath County. I am 69 and can't remember much about him except dad said he was a good farmer and well respected. When you mentioned Arendells, we may be cousins. Tom Arendell was one of the first settlers between Selden and Pleasant Hill (Chigger Hill Methodist Church) about 7 miles out of Stephenville south on Canadian- Mexico trunk Route 281- the American Legion WW1 Memorial Highway used for shipping out troops. Seems Roy held a county office, maybe precinct commissioner. Some old histories said Tom Arendell is buried in Hamilton County. I can show you his grave in Erath Countyon the Moncrief Dairy near the Selden Road. His log cabin- one room- was on the north of the present road and my dad's first cousin'husband has moved it to his home a mile northeast of Selden and completely restored it with dirt floor, fireplace, and hanging hooks. He is a retired dairyman and when hot weather, feed, and milk prices used to bother him, he would go set in the cabin and rock a while- still does. When he built his cabin the Indians had returned to the area during the Civil War absence of men, and many Caddo were friendly. Many Whites had Cherokee blood from the Carolinas and Georgia. Most of these were settled farmers, but Stephenville City Park was used by Choctaw and Comanche Indians for camping on their way to Oklahoma after Texas joined the Union. Before that, Pres. Sam Houston declared all north and East of Tyler as Indian Territory. Pres. Lamar said it was not a reservation but no one had to move if they had personal land and were law abiding. Intermarried Cherokee settled down to the Alabama-Coshuta reservation of today. This was one escape from the Trail of Tears before 1845. Rev. John R. Baylor led the Central Texas Rangers (mostly vigilante, sometimes deputized temporarily) out of Stephenville and Comanche and forced all Caddoes and Lipans- farmers with homes- to Oklahoma. He became the first Governor of Arizona. My Grandmother Ida Kathryn (Moxley) Wyly had a sister, Minnie Olivia Moxley, born 1879 who married Minnie Russell Arendell . They had 6 children, Louis, Belle, Ida, David, and Elmo. I have their birthdates and some children. One Moxley married a Darnell. Dorothy Scrimsher Suitt's mom was their daughter. Dorothy is still in Selden. If I am on the right track, let me know and I can send you more. Must stop now ands attend a former student's funeral. 1. Re: [ERATH] Hale/Jones
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Dear Hales, I was born 1929 in Johnsville, Erath County, Texas 10 miles from Stephenville on U.S.67 towards Glen Rose (The sulphur water resort of 1900-1950's)I knew of 3 Hale families- and do not know if they were connected. I attended Johnsville now Three Way) elementary, Selden high 2 years and Stephenville High 2 years. There was a Grover Hale- a deacon at Selden Baptist church where I attended until I was 14 or so. He had a son Halford a year older than I was. I think Halford is still living. They had a farm with a newer rock home just across the cattleguard where the Selden main street turned left to circle the school ground. I think Halford had older sisters. I remember dad talking about Grover buying neighbors cotton for 30 cents per puond, expecting it to go above 50 cents. In 1929 when the European depression finally rippled through farm comodoties markets in Texas, the cotton dropped to 5 cents a pound, when the bankers finally found out what some farmers already knew. Mr. Hale survived and kept his farm. He lived next door to Alfred Scrimsher. His daughter Dorothy can fill you in on the family and I will forward a copy of this to her. You can contact her at Mutt and Dorothy Suitt Route 3 Box 169A (Selden) Stephenville, Texas 76401. There were two Hale sisters in high school at Stephenville High about 1950. They attended elementary school at Chalk Mountain (Now part of Three Way School District). They, the Laney sisters, and Donna Brock and 2 more girls from Huckaby-Oak Dale area were on the Stephenville High girl's Basketball team which went to State finals and later won State. Stephenville girls dating Tarleton State University considerred basketball as childish and unspohisticated. Today most Texas colleges give girls athletic scholarships. Anyhow, this winning girl's team silenced parents who wanted to eliminate Girl's sports as unladylike. Stephenville now has the highest paid football coach and athletic director in Texas public schools, and the Principal gets $1.00 per year more than the coach. The Laneys, Hales, and Donna Brock and friends rode long bus runs and had played with or against each other for 8 years. Donna Brock is now (Dr. I think) Donna Spross, counselor at Lorena High School,Lorena Texas. Her dad had a dairy and an Auto shop on north side of Stephenville. I taught with her for 6 years in Midway High, in Hewitt, Woodway, Speegleville, Harris Creek,, and Waco, Texas (Not part of Waco Schools) I think, if my memory isn't short circuited , one of the Laney Girls or a Hale married a Hill man who moved to Chalk Mountain. He had excellent but old equipment and used to cut Oats, Barley, and Hairy Vetch and Wheat for my dad and others with a a Regular Farmall with no variable speed throttle and an Allis Chalmer Combine when Super M farmalls and John Deere combines would not cut the stuff without constant binding and choking problems. There was another Hale in Stephenville who was a working carpenter and contractor. He built several homes in the Riverside Edition of Stephenville near the Bosque River where a tornado had cleared some scattered buildings and a farm home a few years before. I knew several Cox, Wright, and others who retired from the farm, and bought one of his painted frame houses with wood floors and all conveniences but air conditioners. Some added evaporative coolers for cooling. All had garden Spots. I had no first hand work experience with this Hale. The houses reminded me of some of Jimmy Carter's Habitat for Humanity homes and were wonderful to the generation who lived in log or box houses , carried their water, and had outhouses like most 1930's house in Texas farms had. Some had gravity fed cold water for the kitchen fro a windmill and overhead tank. They heated bath water on the stove or in a stove resivoir, actually part of the stove. "Aunt" Celia Shaw, 112 lived with "Aunt Marthy" and Ed Cox there. She told me she got married when 13 or 14 and sat on a stump darning socks watching Ed cut logs and build their first log cabin and they started marriage out of debt. Habitat for Humanity was actually started in Georgia near the Carter home by the Koinia Fellowship- a communal group similar to Amish, Mennonite, and the Homestead Heritage community near Waco. Jimmy Carter took that ball and ran with it and now Opra Winfrey is running interference for him, in football terms. It's 107 here today- drove by the giant Waco Flea market today and most dealers were gone by 2 pm.In cooler weather Corpus Christi and Houston antique collectors are there buying. Even stray dogs avoided the place today. My cousin planted hybrid hay in our 93 acres at Selden as soon as constant spring rains stopped and it is so dry the seed has nor sprouted. Cattle being sold off are not going to Wyoming, Kansas, or West Texas feed lots or grazing, but, under Nafda- to Mexico feed lots where they spray them with DDT and bad corn. Dairy cows cannot eat the dead corn stalks with a tablespoon of grain on each cob instead of a cup full- It has Aflotoxins. I understand it is legal in Mexico if not too toxic or clay is mixed with it to bind up the Aflotoxin. It isn.t worth cutting. First time in my life I have seen people shred and rake and bail dead corn stalks. A cousin closed his dairy and is now hauling cull and broken Frito and Potato chips to Mexico from Dallas. We now have 10 to 20 Federal Fire fighters, some from Wyoming, and Helicopters stationed in the Barracks the ATF and FBI stayed in during Mount Carmel on the Texas State Technical College on the old James Conally Air Force Base. They are making 2 or 3 runs a day as local firefighters need them. Two farmers not only lost all their grass and fence posts to fire, but each lost over 100 big round bales of hay each in the fire. It burned 30 acres of Cameron Park, the largest City park in the U.S., but did not get near the zoo nor buildings, thanks to the Forrest service service Heloicoptors dipping from the Brazosand their bulldozers. 4 or 5 other local departments also sent trucks to help Waco, but you didn't ask about all of this. Take care and happy hunting, Charles Wyly P>S> If you know any Wyly families, let me know. One in North Dakota , an attorney, goes South to Denver to get warm in the winter. Folks here go up there to cool off. Others in Wyoming, Oregon & Washington State. to California & most Statesback to Georgia & South Carolina. . _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 1. [ERATH] Request for help
    2. John & Brenda Steward
    3. Hello, all. Do death certificates exist for Erath Co., in the early 1900's? I am trying to find some info on my great-grandmother, Lula Bell STEWARD, who died in Dublin in 1913. All I have from family records is that she was supposedly nee BIRD (Byrd), and born around 1882, probably in AR. Her husband, my great-grandfather, Will STEWARD, died in 1906 and is buried at Comyn. If anybody has any ideas, leads or research, I would be most appreciative. My grandfather was 10 when his mother died, and went to live in Navarro County with his grandparents, Robert STEWARD and Sidnie (pick a spelling) OWENS STEWARD. Help! I need HELP! Thanks, John -- “I remember the Alamo, but I forgot where I parked...” Howdy from John in San Antonio!

    1. [ERATH] Another link...

    3. A cousin alerted us to another great site! This site provides live database and image access to more than two million federal land title records for the Eastern Public Land States, dating back to 1820. To get there, go to our "Self Portraits" site at http://www.selfroots.com and scroll about halfway down the page. Click on "Link YourSelf." Scroll down the "Link YourSelf" page until you get to the Genealogy section. It is the second entry there, directly under the WPA link that you may have gone to earlier this week. Not all Eastern states are represented, but you will probably find something of interest in one or more of them that are there. Check it out! Barbara seawolf@selfroots.com http://www.selfroots.com
