    3. Dear Mr. Martin, Check the Erath County Cemetery readings completed since 1990 by Marilyn Ewers. She was born to a Duffau minister Bro. Giesekie of the Church of Christ and married Vernon Mills of Johnsville. when he went to WW11 in the South Pacific. He worked for dad and farmed the Jim English place on the Hurley branch of the Little Duffau Creek in Johnsville. One son is a Stephenville Contractor and one is , or was, a Highway patrolman in Hamilton County area. Would look it up, but I have stirred my records a few times and it just don't seem to come to the top. Will keep looking. 3. The nearest I know to Defore was a Mister Devore who ran the Itasca grain elevator and Itasca Tractor supply. One of John Sevier's sons or grandsons told his family to meet him at Milford, Texas . he rode ahead and checked it to California and came back and said The Milford- Itasca area in Hill County was as good as any he had seen. I attended high school with Preston Hook. He married Wanda Pendleton from Selden. he runs a Stephenville tire store just north of the RR on Huckaby Hwy (Graham Street.) Boone Brown was a Stephenville business man in the 1940's. I think Marclene that I attended school with was his daughter. Another Erath County Brown was the mother in law of Elmer Johnson's wife and attended Selden and Pony Creek Churches. I taught a Brown boy in West High School. - McLennan County. Sorry I can't be more specific, but maybe these might be hints to check out. 3. I think Mr. Hailey cut my hair a few times at Hico. Hugh Heering married Connie (Ripley?) They lived next farm over at Johnsville in 1939- 1940,s. She taught atr Selden and they were very active in Stephenville Foster Home and other Church of Christ activities. They retired in Stephenville selling Real Estates. She was a member of the bandage rollers and quilters who met in Selden Auditorium building in WW2 and I have her name on a quilt they made, He raised peanuts on Great Aunt Susie Moxley's farm on Hico Hiway. EDWARDS- here's a few- connection, if any, not known. Dewey Edwards was Superintendent at Walnut Springs and halpped me considerably. His son Donnie succeeded him. His mom or Grandmom was a Derrick of Selden- Clairette- Stephenville area. EVANGELIST EDWARDS- or Evan Eddards, killed by Indians, 1796, Cumberland Gap. he had married Jemima Cleveland Wyly after James Wyly left her with two Wyly Kids. Col Ben Cleveland of North Carolina Militia and REv. War had some land in Tennessee or Kentucky and they had lived there a year or so. A hunting party was ahead and the Indians attacked, killing and scalping Mr. Edwards and injuring others before the hunting party rescued them J.R. Wyly, age 12 or so, jumpped through bushes into a stream and hid under the bank. Elizabeth Wyly grabbed two Edwards children and hid them in a bush. Jemima then took 3 Edwards children to some of Col. Ben;s land in Clinton , East Felicians Parish, La. I wrote Mattie Roberts Somerville of La.- a Wyly grandchild and geneaologist if this was the family of Gov. Edwards of La. who flew into Stephenville in a private plabe while governor and paid for a ranch with cash from a brief case. She died in 1988 Ice storm of diabetes and heart before she answerred- but she sent me a few pages of Wyly, Cleveland, and Edwards history from Clinton La, court records, when Gen. J.R. Wyly and cousin Gen Ben Cleveland, both of Ga. Militia, and John Cleveland all testified as to family claims and reclaimed the La. land from Daniel Cleveland for Col. Ben's estate and the Edwards children. I am a descendant of SARAH HAWKINS CLARK- A DAU. OF Maj Clark and Elizabeth Sevier who died when Sarah was 7. She told her children and grandchildren in Ga, when she lived with some Wylys who came to Selden and Stephenville that her grandad John Sevier raised her in Sevierville and Knoxville. she was married to James Rutherford Wyly there and they built Inns up and down Tugaloo Turnpike from Tennessee to Toccoa, Ga. where coaches from Charleston and Atlanta crossed hw bought Walton land from cousin Gen Joseph Martin and sold the Traveller's Rest Inn to the Lucas- Jarrett families. It is over 150 years old and is a Georgia State park on the internet- Tales told there to Sarah Clark by her grandad Gen. Sevier then to her grandkids ended up in Erath County. Wish I had listened closer as a child. Their son married an Eddins and a Mitchell descended from Yowell families and Co. Von Moller (Moulder) If any of this rings a bell, I can send some dates & more info. Careful- if you do geneaology long enough you may meet yourself going the other way. 3. The Conways have several pages in Sevier Family History with letters of Gen and Gov. John Sevier of Fort Watayga, 1780.s and Rev. War. One Sevier married a Conway and they, like Wylys and Kings, are listed into Texas. One of Sevier's kids married a Cherokee- John had followed orders to complete the Trail of Tears. His grandson Daniel Sevier, on Cherokee rolls, was a Governor of Arkansas. In Scotland, if one was invited to a social function and the Conway Rose was over the door, anyone could speak freely about anything and the one who repeated it later anywhere to an outsider was subject to death at the hands of a Conway. Seviers in Waco, Itasca, and Killeen have the same Family history I do. Source: Sevier Family History and speakers at one Sevier Family Reunion we arrended about 1988 . Tuckers in Hillsboro and West run lumber yards. I attend church with one in Hewitt who is retired Military. Check your internet phone book to find these, or I could send them if they are your line. 3. Dear folks, Don't remember name Morrison in Erath County, but come east from Alexander on the old, now gone, Texas Central Railroad (Katy) , through Hico, Iredell, and Walnut Springs, where the Texas Central Roundhouse, college, hospital, and shops were before Katy moved them to Waco. Half way to Morgan an Earl Morrison lived on a sheep and grain ranch, across the hiway from the RR in a brownstone house. Judy was in high school in the 1960's- her twin brother died on the football field (6 man football) they year before I moved there. She was a cheerleader and basketball player. She had an older brother. Earl was a deacon at Walnut Springs and gave my kids each an orphan lamb to feed. The bottles were soda pop bottle, so a Massey neighbor named them Pepsi and Billy and showed the kids how to feed them. Earl lived near the Morgan- Campbell ranch. Squire Morgan, brother to the owner, was our neighbor. Mrs. Morgan gave me a pendolum clock in their family for over 100 years as a graduation present when I finished my M. Ed. at Univ. of North Texas. Walnut Springs, Bosque County, joins Chalk Mountain, Erath County on the south side of Chalk Mountain ( Three Way School District. ) Johnsville, Chalk Mountain, Pony Creek, and inactive Marble(Greasy) past Skippers Gap to create Skippers Gap consolidated to create Three Way Schools between Stephenville and Glen Rose Districts- pretty long bus routes. PLAINVIEW CHURCH AND CEMETERY WERE NEAR THE CHALK MOUNTAIN SCHOOL. THE CHALK MOUNTAIN LODGE, THE OLDEST ACTIVE IN TEXAS, WAS 3 OR 4 MILES TOWARD GLEN ROSE. Chalk Mountain, Johnsville, and Skippers Gap post offices are gone now. Happy hunting. 3. I forgot to give you Ramsey Information. Someone else also wanted Ramsey info. Bob Ramsey was around 50 when I attended church at the Pony Creek (Box) Church. He and his son Bobby and wife attended there but lived near the Mitchell Creek Church past Miller Hill and Pony Creek School. He was a Deacon. Don't know if Ted was his son or brother. Ted lived near the old Crockett School across from where the Selden Paved road hits U.S. 67. Cedar Point is a few miles farther north There was a cluster of houses across from Ned Gristy, farm. Ted and Billy and Bobby lived there near Elvis Riggs, by the celar Elvis Riggs found Mr. Snow's stepson's head in a tow sack. By the way, a gun did not kill those 3- it was an axe- Let's all outlaw axes. They are too easy to get. ???? When I returned from the Army in 1952 Beth Ramsey was in Tarleton, Ted's daughter. About this time was when Crockett Ross was killed by Dan White ant Robert Bagwell. The teenager who shot him, robbing a station by Tarleton got life- his Uncle was was outside in the car and was later converted and baptized by a Selden pastor who held Jail Worship and I think the Selden Church accepted him, bur he made no appeal and was executed. He had trained his nephew to rob and steal. Another Ramsey, Bob's sister, married Oscar Eades, not long out of Georgia, and a Selden Deacon. One of their daughters, Ruby, is now past 90. She married Glen Kay, who was David Hensley Kay's son. "Uncle Hense" married Lenora Estelle Wyly in Georgia and lived next to Grandad. "Aunt Nora" was one of the 23 kids and 3 others raised by Oliver Cromwell Wyly in Hiawassee and Habersham County, Ga. Glen's brother was Roy Kay who was Supt. of San Marcos Academy. His daughter Velma Kay Hutchins of Houston is a certified genealolgist. Her brother Roy Roland lives in Stephenville now. Jump back- don't know the connection, but Velma does if it is there. The first Tennessee Historian was Dr. J.G. Ramsey who was born at Swan Pond, Strawberry Plains at the Junction of the Tennessee (Holston) and Hiawasse Rivers and the Presbyterian Church - oldest in Tennessee is on the hill there by the cemetery. Only the giant columns and slab remain. The first church was log. The Ramseys built the present 2 story house called Swan Pond before 1830It has guided tours now. My wife's ancestor Jeremiah Jack, my John Sevier, the first Governor and Rev. War Hero who won 45 + battles with British and Indians backing the British, and sometimes White, Gillespie, & Mc Allies ( my wife's ancestors) worshiped at the church (Holston I think - Scottish Presbyterian) in A,M,. and often met at the Ramsey home for social life, singing, and worship. They had come to Tennessee on the same type single trail Daniel Boone used, with a backpack and a pack mule with narrow load. They traded with Nancy Ward and friendly Indians at the Blue Peace City of Refuge (Cherokee) No photos or graven images were allowed in Scottish homes but parent photos and the President's photos on the wall. They had a small window about chair high by the fireplace- about 8" square, glassed- This was the Welcome candle window. If someone was home the candle would be burning and anyone- Indian- Black- or white could come into the kitchen, pull the swinging iron soup pot out, dip some food, and sleep on the kitchen floor- and be gone before the Ramseys needed the kitchen. the next day. Today someone would drop drugs in the pot. They there or nearby told us that if one on the underground railroad saw a Log Cabin Quilt on the clothes line and the center was brighrt red or orange, that meant keep moving, the house was being watched. If the center was black or dark blue it meant come on in and eat. They would have a cellar entrance under a deer hide or hook rug and if someone knocked on the door, visitors hid in the cellar and rug and table were back in place before the soldiers or bounty hunters were admitted. Knoxville area was mostly Republican - some slave owners- just one or 2 and mostly live and let live. Baylor museum workers had never heard this. A teacher at Lake Air Waco school said her family has at least 3 of these quilts with the home fire out- a dark center. Check Greeneville College (Now part of Tuscullum College , ) Greeneville, Tennessee and Blont College (Now Univ. of Tennessee at Knoxville) for family records. Robert & other Wylys are recorded there. John Sevier was a trustee of both- the two oldest west of the Apalachians and both the first two co-educational in the U.S. Not sure te boys and girls took all the same courses- but co-educational.I bet Ramseys had students in one of them. . Seems Geneaology is not a study of lines but of the loops and swirls we did in elementary handwriting. Will quit boring you. 3. Joy, i attended Selden Schools 1942-1944 for the first 2 years of High school and Texas added a 12 th grade that year, between the 7 th and or 8 th and all us who were past that grade were diuble promoted, which allowed me to finish school in 11 years. My principal and main teacher at Selden was Lige M. Fox- he had one arm missing and was teaching when many his age were overseas. His twin sons were Jimmy and Sammy and they had a smaller brother His dad had lived at Tolar. He asked all 9 and 10 grade boys to go home or to a relative or friend's home and get a gun- we were sent out for two days hunting Rabid dogs so it would be safe for the elementary students to walk home, Try that today. We knew the gun was a farm tool to protect livestock and kill hogs and rabid animals of all kinds and kill snakes. . We "put down" our own old diseased pets and horses. It was what farmers did- vets like Dr. Scott & Hennessee were busy saving cows and horses which might have a future. wE DID NOT DUMP UNWANTED PETS IN A POISONED COTTON PATCH WHERE THERE WAS NOTHING TO EAT. Today coyotes would kill dumped pets and eat them in some of Erath,Bosque, and Hill County. Yes, as someone noted, we left houses unlocked, even with guns in them and I never heard of one being stolen before 1950. Every one had one , just like Alaska today. Out of this group came a Throckmorton Sheriff, a Texas Hiway patrolman, Several soldiers- some were Military Police or Shore Patrol, and several teachers. Mr. Fox said his dad was starting home from Tolar about sundown one Saturday, the family were settled in the wagon and he took out a cut plug of chewing tobacco and tried to bite the corner off. he tried again- and again- and held it up in the last rays of sunshine and turned it over. A mouse was pressed into the tobacco and he was trying to bite its head off. Bet that cured his habit. His dad also said he once had a car- many were made after WW1 with car body and surplus Aircraft motors. He kept his gun under the hood. Once a hitchhiker pulled a gun or knife on him while driving, and pretended the motor was missing by hitting his gas pedal, then adjusting his dash mixture control ( like a Model A Ford) the wrong way and the motor died. He raised the hood, reached to the motor, and pulled the pistol on the hitchhiker and put him out and away from the car and drove off. 3. Charles, Thanks for the info on the Keiths. Seems like I descend from a long line of ministers. My Thomas C. Capell, Born August 11, 1834, Died July 3, 1914 was a Methodist minister. My Reuben D. Ross, Born September 26, 1824, Died December 29, 1908 was a Baptist minister. I understand Reuben was one of the first ministers in Erath County and was known as Comanche Rube. Kay
