Dear Ms. Maynard, Sorry about the confusion I may have caused. I arttended the 60 year Reunion of the 1935 First Grade at Johnsville. in Three Way Gym and had conflicts the last two years. In 1990 we were all there. I knew Marilyn had discussed some cemeteries and she was apparently reading the ones needed for another book, NOT ALL CEMETERIES IN ERATH COUNTY, BUT FOR THE THREE WAY SCHOOL AREA COMMUNITIES. Her book of 285 pages is entitled Some History of the Johnsville, Pony Creek, and Chalk Mountain Communities who consolidated to for m the Three Way School District, Erath County, Texas by Marilyn Giesecke Mills Ewers 900 Glen Rose, Texas 76401 817-965-4984 1995 Once again my apologies. I also have ccemetery readings for Hatchett- Selden and Indian Creek somewhere. Guess I thought she did them, but she didn't. Thanks for catching my error before it multiplied. My Grandmother was born at Desdemona and often spoke of living at Erath. Her Grandmother Margaret Mayberry was killed by Indians in Parker Cty and buried near Soda Springs. Can you add anything on these families? Many thanks. Larry Oakley
Mr. Wyly - Not to be ugly, but I received a brief note from Marilyn Ewers that says "Dear Ann - Charles is mistaken, I did not do the Erath County Cemetery Inscriptions. Dear Sir : I recognize one last name- Hooker. There is a Hooker Cave between Abbott and West. Most Abbott kids have been through a short section, including Willie Nelson. It is in McLennan County, barely. Mr Hooker ran a cotton gin in Abbott, Hill County, Texas. His grandson whom he raised, was Mart Cole, deceased, who used to raise money for Baylor University. Most entrances to the cave are now closed because of the methane gas danger. it was photographed and published in the Texas Caver. It had a turtle carved in a tree and ORO on a rock nearby. It was a stop for Gold bearing Mule trains from Arkansas back to Mexico. Mr. Hooker's father in law was a Carr- brother to Judge Carr of El Paso who financed Judge Roy Bean. He had a stagecoach stop near the cave. This is near the Abest overpass on I-35. North of Fort Worth was the cave, south of Denton used by Sam Bass. -on I-35. South of Waco at Camp Tahuya is a nother cave with deep cuts in rock in the Boy scout camp done by stagecoaches. Caves were a way to escape hostile Indians and get warm in the winter. This pattern follows to San Antonio and Laredo. The same general path for I-35 follows the ancient Spanish trail, in some of the sorry part of Texas- following the protection of trees and on the gravel ridges between deep black land to the east and mixed farm and ranch land to the west. Many stories of Mr. Hooker and the Coles and Carrs are in Hillsboro, West, and Waco papers. Probably in El Paso stories too. Limestone for Abbott, West, Waco, and Hillsboro were quarried near the cave. The Fellows family I knew lived in Hico, Hamilton County, just across the Erath County line. Janie Fellows and husband live in a new log house near her dad's old White house in Bosque County. - From Hico take Hwy 6 towards Iredell and Meridian, in Bosque County. Can't help with Erath County Taylors, but the retired Principal at Midway High School , Hewitt, Texas is Don Taylor. His dad was a minister in the Amarillo area. Other Taylors in Hewitt and Moody are part of the Vandiver and Guest families of Moody, Hewitt, and Waco. Coleman Taylor was in my Sunday School Class and is now in and out of the Rest home. Roy Garrett ran a service station in Evergreen, Texas on U.S. 67 out of Stephenville towards Glen Rose from the 1920's to 1940's . He was gassed in World War ! and had enpesema . Jerry Parham runs a wrecking yard and used car & pickup lot there now. Herbert B Garrett of Stephenville, my parent's age, married Emma May English. Her dad owned the farm at Johnsville next to my home. On the old dirt load near Littles and Coxes on old dirt U.S.67 there was a two story log house where Aunt Etta Robinson (Moxley) - her family and others whose husbands were away to the Civil War. They shared the house because of Indians passing through to intertribal rallies at Comanche Peak. Some Scouts were seen in the area since the Texas Partizan Rangers(Irish and American) in the U.S. Army were active in German area around New Braunfels, Sisterdale, and Boerne. The women, kids and elderly men had to depend on each other. One Indian was shot by a Robinson wife. The old men went out & found a bullet between his eyes. He had died on a scouting expedition on the North Duffau Creek. He had been tied in a crouched position behind a bush by nother Indian scout so they would be gone when he was found. Herbert Garrett ran a mail route in Stephenville. I attended school with his daughter. Mom used to visit them some. Ring any Bells? We have another treat for you on our "Self Portraits" site. Our friend, Erin Wallace Mangiapane, writes a column for the San Antonio Express-News. We already have a link to her column's Website on "Self Portraits." (Go to http://www.selfroots.com, scroll down the page and click on "Link YourSelf," scroll down that page to the Genealogy section, and click on the link, the first one in that section.) Now--right next to that link is another link to an interview that Erin gave on a radio talk show. It deals with genealogy and mentions the USGenWeb, and it is the first of others to come later which will discuss tips for genealogy research. The interview requires Real Audio 5.0--which you can find easily on the Web for free download (you can use one of our Search Engine links at the bottom of the "Link YourSelf" page). It is also available for a LIMITED TIME ONLY. Enjoy! Barbara seawolf@selfroots.com http://www.selfroots.com
I've been scanning some of The Erath Appeal newspaper from 1899 and 1900 on the http://www.rootsweb.com/~txerath page and have run across what I assume are relatives of Mr. Wyly. Interesting to see the WYLY name in that old nespaper.
Marilyn Ewers has your Gillentines her book "Some History of Johnsville, Pony Creek, and Chalk Mountain . They were in the Pizarro Post office area. /some are buried in same graveyards from Johnsville to Acton, apparently, or their kin- . This apparently includes Hollis, Crockett, Beach, Willingham, Some are buried in a cemetery no longer fenced or maintained in a thick cedar grove on Beach- Rumph land- the old Box/Pony Creek cemetery to the front and right of the church---Not the rock fenced Beech cemetery, nor the Box cemetery behind the church. Marilyn also lista associates of Beach family as Gillentine, Wood, Duke, Evans, Anderson, Rumph, Crockett, & Willingham. Get her book. She has good bgeneral info and has also read all headstones in the county. Across the Paluxy at Acton, Hood County, is the burial site of a wife of one who died at the Alamo. Think it was a Crockett. Between the Chalk Mountain hill and Glen Rose is the Nancy Smith Cemetery, widow of Deaf Smith of Alamo fame. There was a school named Crockett 3 miles west of Box Church, on the prairie west of Hurley and Riggs land. My great Uncle Ed Fleming, Missouri born, taught there. When he caught 3 boys chewing tobacco in the back of the room and spitting through a knothoke, he told them to wash their mouth at the pump. take a fresh chew, and stand with hands on knees and chew and spit 10 times. Each time the knothole was missed, the boy got a lick with a paddle. This school was so rough they ran several teachers off. One young lady, an attorney,s sister, took the job. At recess it seemed they were trying to hit her with the baseball. She tightened her hold on the bat, stepped back, swung, and split the bat. She had no more trouble. Charles, I had forgotten to mention that Two Mts. is the name of a clothing company my cousin's family started in honor of the land they grew up on. I'm not sure they are still in business or not........ but it was a line of casual wear with a southwest look. Debbie
Charles, Ahhh..........you hit some familiar names for me. Two Mountains or Double Mountains which are in the Caprock area near Snyder is ONE AREA OF TX I've been too. My mother's cousin owns a ranch at the base of the Caprock and part of the Caprock I'm told. Snyder is where many of her family live, including two of her brothers, ie. Henry Lee "Tommy" THOMPSON and Gerald THOMPSON. All the THOMPSON in the area are probably part of our family. My cousin Brenda is a hair dresser in Sweetwater (you mentioned that town) and her brother is the juvenile probation officer for the county Snyder sits in. Will close but keep your knowledge flowing as it is good to read all you remember or can find. DEBBIE

...for everyone! We agree wholeheartedly with Mike and JoAnn! Not only do Janice and Annette host a lovely Website; but of our 9 listservs, Erath is the most successful. Thank you, Charles Wyly, for starting things with your wonderful stories and reminiscences; and thank you, all other subscribers to our list, for sharing, asking, researching...; and thank you, Janice and Annette for having the perfect companion page for our list. With all the discussion, posted queries, and surnames, you're sure to find out about your Erath ancestors--not just learning names and dates, but sharing their lives as well. Keep up the good work, all of you! Your list owners, Tim tim@selfroots.com Barbara seawolf@selfroots.com http://www.selfroots.com Barbara seawolf@selfroots.com http://www.selfroots.com
