    1. Re: [ERATH] 1872 cattle drive
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Lana- after re-reading your letter and my reply, let me simplify my answer. if your ancestors joined the Goodnight- Loving Trail in the present Erath County, it is reasonable this drive did not originate in the Palo Duro Canyon south of Amarillo. The Texas Almanac shows another East branch of the trail starting west of Fort Worth in the vicinity of the W.T. Waggoner Ranch near Weatherford. If they drove cattle straight west on the presentgeneral route of I-20 and climbed the Ranger hill they were in Erath County in the vicinity of Thurber and may have turned south toward Desdemona (Hogtown) then to Comanche, Brownwood, and San Angelo, intersecting Palo Duro Canyon Branch in the Concho River and Colorado River (Of Texas) near San Angelo, below Colorado City, Texas. Depends on the grass, Indians, and new fences. They could have crossed Erath and continued due west along the present I-20 route to Abilene and then turned south through the Buffalo Gap, then to San Angelo. The Abilene route was more open, except for the Callahan Mesqitue groves. Would be more water and less mesqitue through Comanche and Brownwood The Spanish had named the High Plains the LLano Estacado or the Staked Plains. The Indian guides for Spanish taught them to collect tall Yucca bloom stems and at night by the campfire, peel them They were used to put a bright- almost white stake every so many yards across the High Plains. There were no other landmarks to sight on and avoid going in a circle. Even the wind isn't from a constant direction all day every day, At Camp Val Verde, Waco, they taught us how to break sticks or pile rocks making an arrow point down the trail., Indian style. Flat on the ground, the wind would not move these markers. A combination of Stakes and arrows on the ground would be simple to read and easy to change to decieve an enemy following you. Perhaps your family joined a larger drive of Waggoner or other cattle for the Goodnight- Loving trail. The Waggoner was a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt and one ranch house near Cresson had a room he had stayed in . The Fort Worth Star- Telegram has carried stories on the ranch and some western trails over the years, usually during the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show. The season for this fair has also changed over the years. I attended the 1936 Texas State Centenial in both Dallas and Fort Worth with my parents. . For educational trips like that with parents, you were counted present at school- I had a perfect attendance slip that year. By the way, it sounds strange to some that they drove cattle from Colorado to the Palo Duro Canyon area, then later drove them farther south to get back to Colorado up the Pecos and Rio Grande Rivers. No stranger than the Kuykendalls, who were active in Bosque County from 1830-s on, in the 1940's they would buy East Texas cattle as needed to supplement the herd. If Bosque County range got too dry they, in 1950's sometimes loaded cattle in Diesel Truck trailers and took them to Wyoming or other summer pasture in the area, and when winter set in, they would send them to market or bring some back to the fresh winter green grain grazing in Bosque County. Their Kuykendall Land & Cattle, downtown office in Clifton , Texas was open until a few years ago. I no longer see their signs. According to PBS programs, the surplus Black Drovers put out of business when the trail drives ceased, often joined the Buffalo Soldiers and manned the Fort Concho and other Southwestern Forts. Think one was in Yellowhouse Canyon, west of Levelland. The Indians named them in honor of their fear and respect of them . They drew 2/3 of the pay of a White soldier, as did the ones who served in the Civil War. The U.S.Army kept troops segregated until after WW2- usually with some White officers. I was in the first integrated Heavy Tank Batallion in the Korean War. A main street in Fort Hood is named for the 751 Black Tank Batalion , across the street from us at Camp Polk. Most of them in WW2 fought under the French Flag- not their own Stars and Stripes. Some had Czech officers from Central Texas- who had lived near Black farm workers. The Confederacy and the Georgia, Militia, had integrated troops from 1812 to the end of the Civil War and they were given the same pay as white soldiers. One entire company of Black soldiers volunteered to Louisiana Civil War officers, only to be rejected as untrustworthy after a lengthy argument among white officers. They preferred integrated units to encourage each other. The volunteer Free Blacks rode north and joined the Northern Army to get respect. In the war of 1812, Gen. James Rutherford Wyly was second in command of the Georgia Militia unit that sacked and burned Talahassee, Fla. They had 700 White and 400 Cherokee slodiers- the Cherokees were mad at the Seminoles for backing the British against their Anglo cousins. They were paid back by Andrew Jackson with the Trail of Tears when the Anglos found the Georgia Gold Fields. Seems sometimes we are our own worst enemy. 1. Re: [ERATH] ROSS
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Hi, Sandy, Some of th Ross family ran a service station in Hico , Texas at the intersection of Hwy 67 and U.S.281, catty cornerred across from the Koffe Kup Kafe for many years. The Koffe Kup Kafe has many old pictures of Early Hico on its walls. Crockett Ross was killed at a Stephenville service station near Tarleton. He was shot by a teenage Robert Bagwell who was robbing the service station Mr. Ross was in charge of. Dan White, Robert's Uncle, was sittting in the get away car outside- 1940's or 50. Robert got life in prison and his Uncle, who had raised him for a time, got the Electric chair. Before he died, he was converted by a Selden pastor doing Jail services. He was baptized in Stephenville First Baptist Church baptistry and Selden Church accepted him as a member based on his profession of faith. He made no more appeals before execution. If you tie to Sull Ross, Texas Ranger officer from Waco who found Cynthia Ann Parker, Quannah Parker's mom in The Wichita Falls area on the White River. he must have been lost at the time, as he said in one report they made a forced ride 6 days north of Albequerque, N.M. in original Republic of Texas on the White River (Wyoming???) The White River near Wichita Falls is not north of Albequerque, New Mexico, but east. Maybe they were north of Albequerque when they started??. Sull Ross later became President of Baylor University and later Texas A&M. University. Several streets and buildings in Waco are named for him or his family. I think the Texas A&M Honor Guard crack drill team is named the Sull Ross Rifles. For Ross history in Waco look in Geneaology Department of Waco- McLennan County (Which once included Erath County land records), McLennan County Courthouse, the Texas Collection of Baylor University (not the main Library- a separate library), the Texas Ranger Hall of fame and library off Hwy 35 at the Brazos, and the Texas A&M Library. 3. Hi, Linda! I was born and reared in Erath County and taught at Venus. We lived on the curve outof Venus on US 67 toward Alvarado. My wife's ancestors in Alvarado and Cleburne included Ash, Clayton, Jack, Gillespie, Riley, and Renfro. I found a name that might be of interest- you are a Conaster descendant. Mrs. Nelda Smith Stone Wilson of 524 West Sypert, Nashville, Arkansas, 71852. She published a Stone family History Book and a Howard County History book. They may have been combined . She sent a photo of a TIM CONASTER and cousin ECTOR WEATHERS, age 17 for both, who (Probably 20 years ago) where Tim was examining a vine coverred headstone in an abandoned cemetery. Nelda says there are many of these in Southwest Arkansas. Some have no names, just a rock headstone, abandoned over 100 years ago when the land owners moved to Texas or farther west. The photo was taken of Tinm Conaster near Antioch, Arkansas. The Bateman Cemetery, containing some Stone, Carey, Copeland and others is now maintained. Engraved headstones had to be shipped down river from S. Louis and up the Red River to the port of Fulton. William Bateman was buried in this area when George Washington was still living- 1797 & his stone is marked. I am seeking Bateman info- some from Mecklenburg County are on the U.S.Census and the Cherokee rolls. After 1884 headstones were brought into Southwest Arkansas by rail. In 1890 some local shops began cutting and engraving headstones. In Texas many were marked in limestone rock with chisels and scratch tools. Some were poured concrete. There is a retired teacher (I don't know her husband's name) with the last name of George and then a Roger George that lives 5 or 6 miles north of Stephenville on a farm that belonged to his father. Roger might be in his 60's (not sure) but that would make his father of the generation you were asking about. If I can help, let me know. 3. The only person I ever heard of with the last name of George is Bob George of Dallas Texas who runs a radio show about sundown on Dallas 660 and Waco 1010 and others called "Classic Christianity" or "People to People". His wife's family were in a Russian Communist Prison and she went through rough times. She has written one book. Apparently he does not meet in Churches, but hotels and public auditoriums. He is interesting. Seems all programs sound very similar. - wait a minute- wasn't there a Phyllis George, a Beauty Queen? Think she was from Texas. 3. I sent some Gillentine records today to Dee- Need to start proofreading- I left out a key word- the ordinance that Rev. Hurley's church considerred as one of the 3 was footwashing. Many Baptist and Methodist Churches- sometimes joint congregations in the same building, had spontaneous footwashings after Baptisms or The Lord's Supper.. These were not taught as doctorine and are practically unheard of today. The Episcopal Church has , on some special occasions, an announced footwashing- whether by everyone or the leaders, I do not know. Two sermons of one hour each and one or 2 of the Ordinances made a long service. Baptism was in the Creeks nearby. This is described in Dr. Tidwell, sSouthwestern Baptist Seminary Ph.D Theses- a History of the family of " Choctaw" Bill Robinson. and the geneaology of the Robinsons. People all over Erath and Comanche Counties are descendants of his. Dr. Tidwekk, of Iredell, Texas was Southern Baptist and his wife was Primitive Baptist of Iredell, Texas. Both Churches claimed Great Great Grandad Rev. & Dr. & Pharmacist & farmer William Pinckney Hatchett. He and Bill Robinson shared the oulpit on special occasions. Dr. Hatchett was a leader in organizing the Central Texas Baptist Convention, including the Paluxy Association. Dr. Hatchett's father in law was Rev. B.T.Stevens buried Hatchett Cemetery, Selden, Texas and active in Chipley, Georgia. His daughters, wives of Dr. hatchett ( of Mexican War, 1845) were Angelina Isabella Stevens and Narcissa Stevens. Both marriages in Georgia.at least one after he came to Texas- think Rev. Stevens had both weddings in Georgia. 3. Kay, First I'll post info. as I have received it and then post some "conflicting" data. If anyone else researches BRUMBELOW/BRUMBELOW/BRUMBELO/BRUMBLO there is an excellent book "Brumbelow: Linear Expansion" by Jerry Lee Brumbelo, 1982. I was able to view this book several years back and KNOW I have some notes from it but those seem to have disappeared into my files. No problem though as I sent copies of what I found to my cousin, Lisa PAGE (a direct descendant). Melinda "Linda" MULLINs also descends from this line and is found online. Lewis BRUMBELOW / Nichodemus KEITH md. Eliz. BRUMBELOW b @ 1820's Robertson Co. TN d 14 Jan. 1895 TX / Abijah B. KEITH b 1842 TX md. Mary Ellen UZZELL / Leucey Ann KEITH b 1878 Erath Co. TX md. 1893 Erath Co. TX Chana B. MULLINS Chana was my grandmother's uncle. He left TX for Kay Co., Roger Mills, OKLA then to Qualla, NM I have a copy of Chana and Leucy with 4 of their children and the youngest is like looking at my sister as a child. Incredible what genetic can do with looks. This girl is our 2nd cousin once removed and still family looks are startling. Now, the Brumbelow book I mentioned states that the line of Lewis BRUMBELOW was well researched by Mr. Michael COOK, Certified Genealogist , of 3318 Wimbert Ave., Evansville, IN He has placed her as marring 45 Aug. 1841 Stephen D.DORRIS.(According to Wm. POE of Tuscon, AR sh remarried Nicodemus KEITH). The book then lists the children as follows: Abijah DORRIS 23 Jul 1842 TX Stephen " " 19 Feb 1844 TX John Bunyon " 3 Jan 1846 TX Rebecca Jane " 16 Sept 1848 TX Louisa " 23 Jun 1850 Wm. Bundy " I wrote Lisa about this finding and my suggestion was to find Nicodemus KEITH and Eliz. BRUMBELOW's marraige certificate to determine if these children were in fact DORRIS or KEITH children and compare with census records. Regardless......we know that Abijah used KEITH as his surname in later years. Abijah B. KEITH is listed as Elijah on some records in err. b23 Jul 1840/42 (FHC) d 10 Jan 1930 NM md.23 May 1869 Hunt Co.
