Dear Tracy, The only person I have heard of is a "Hack" Branch. I understand he runs a wholesale Beer warehouse and truck routes in Waco and is a Deacon who has contributed to various Baylor University Projects. Guess you have heard about the Forty Gallon Baptist Church in West Virginia. Years ago, possibly a century or so, when the budget was being planned they pledged the only thing they had that would raise money and it was in jugs. Sounds strange to me, but so do tobacco companies for the same reason. I will bet Hack Branch may have records of interest to you, or can get them if you stimulate his interest. Take care Charles A. Dear Tami, Guess you saw the recent postings of the Ramsey House built at Swan Pond, Strawberry Plains, Holston, Tennessee, south of Knoxville. I do not know of Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey's connection to Erath County Ramseys I knew, but they had Tennessee roots. I also sent a posting of the murder of Crockett Ross in Stephenville when I was in Tarleton College. If you don't find it, let me know. Also the Ross family ran a service station at the intersection of U.S. 281 and Texas Hwy 6 in Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. The Hamilton County Historical society is on the internet. Guess you also know that one of the world's largest traders in Horses and mules was the Ross Horse and Mule Barns in Fort Worth, Texas. Could one say it was in God's timing that as the southern farmers bought tractors and got rid of their horses and mules, the Turkish and later the U.S.Army wanted hundreds of mules to backpack ammo in mountain trails? We supplied our tanks in India in World War 2 with American mules on the Burma Road. My wife's cousin said he had led them on the trail and had seen mules slip and fall hundreds of feet with the ammo on their backs exploding. He said to a Texas farm boy who had plowed with Texas mules and monthas without seeing anyone but other mule drivers, it was like loosing a family member. Some of the Ross buildings next to the old Hog barns may still be standing in front of Billy Bob's on Historic Stockyards Streets. A Spagetti Warehouse stands on the hill where Swift and Armour packing plants once stood. A major market for horses now is coastal slaughterhouses who process horse meat for human consumption and fly it frozen to Paris. Those people eat most anything. Check your Tarrandt County- Fort Worth pages for more Ross families. It's 65 miles from Stephenville. Hi y'all, Could someone living in Erath Co. try to find an obituary for M.I. (Miller Irving) Thomas. He died 2 Aug 1936. He lived about a mile from Dublin. I sent an e-mail to the library in Stephenville but got no response. Maybe they are too busy this time of year. I am especially interested in the names of his parents. Thanks for any help you can provide. Kerry

Grace is my husband's mother and she is living in a nursing home near us in Boerne, suffering from Alzheimer's as well as a broken hip. She is the 9th and last child born to William Aaron and Lula Bell Jordan. William Aaron's parents were WILLIAM HENRY JORDAN and LOUISA C. HIGHTOWER. We went up to Austin to the Bureau of Vital Statistics hoping to get copies of her birth certificate. There is no such document. Instead, there is a "memorandum" apparently submitted by the doctor recording the birth of an infant - no sex or name specified - on 3 Sept 1916 and the names of the parents are misspelled: the doctor put down "Jourdan" for "Jordan" and "Lucy" for "Lula Bell". The State is requiring that we submit other proof of her birth and existence, plus other documents providing the correct way to spell her parents' names. Can anyone help us? Are there census documents? Early school records? Birth records of any of the other 8 children, all of whom were born in Morgan Mill, Erath Co., showing the correct spelling of the parents' names? The other 8 kids were: 1. Cecil Aaron 5-10-1900 2. Lucy Velona 13-7-1902 3. Bessie May 13-7-1904 4. Bobie Day 5-9-1905 5. Mary Alcie 19-9-1907 6. Nellis Lee "Gayle" 6-5-1909 7. George W. Ray 16-4-1912 8. Ruby Leato 1-6-1914 We were given to understand that the HIGHTOWER and JORDAN families were well-known and heavily involved in establishing Morgan Mill. Someone suggested that if we could find any "old-timers" that would know of the family, perhaps they could verify her existence through an affadavit. We would appreciate any help and/or information so we can help Grace. She needs Texas state aid but without proof of her birth, they are balking. She has been a TX resident all of her 82 years but we are unable to prove it. We appreciate your time, and your knowledge, and would be grateful for any help you could give. Sincerely, Lauri Haines Fairway1@texas.net

Can't help you on these families in Erath County, but check the Sevier Family History book. Ewing is one of the 28 plus colatteral families who were connected to The family of Govrnor and General John Sevier, hero of Battle of King's Mountain and first Tennessee Governor. and 30 others. It is by Cora Bailes Sevier and Nancy Sevier Madden. Nancy Madden told me in Gatlainburg , Tennessee that she now has more info on Wylys as a colinneal family than any of the others. - Sarah Clark, Gen. Sevier's granddaughter married a Wyly before 1820. Sevier descendants in Erath County included Wyly, King, Hatchett, Kay, & possibly Ewings. others. Sevier in England and U.S. was changed from Xavier, the Royar Burbon family of Navarre, Pamplona, and Aragon- the Basque empire in the Pyrineyes Mountains. The book was printed in Washington, D.C. 1964. In the appendix it states that the Ewings are a sub-division of Scottish Clan McLachlan In Linda Ewing's book called My Forebearers says that Ewing was the son of Fergus Erca Scottish Knng of one province. The clan seat today is in Kilmore , Scotland. They are mentioned in the epic poem Tradition says the Prophet Jeremiah , Old Testament, crowned his daughter - or a kinsman King of Ireland. In 580 BC the stone was brought from the temple in Jerusaleum to the Hill of Terah in Ireland and the parent- founders of the Ewing families were crowned on the Stone of Destiny, It was carried to Scotland. Mary Queen of Scotts carried the stone to Westminister Abbey and placed it under the Coronation Chair. Each King and Queen since then have sat over the Stone of Destiny, until this year it was returned to Scotland. Some legend says it was the stone King David used for a pillow when hiding from King Saul. All of this was supposed to strengthen the Divine Rights of British Kings. I also found another Erath County connection to Irish royalty in a DAR Journal in Waco High library. According to this legend in English archives, Nail Mor was the Pharo's daughter who found Moses in the Bullrushes. When another pharoh took over her family fled to Ireland. The Nile ?River was named for her. She was Sythian. She was also crowned as an Irish king. Don't know who asked the Irish natives about it. She was an ancestor of the McNeils of the United States. Dr. Mcneil of Stephenville had a granddaughter who married mom's close Stone cousin. When John Wilkes Booth, with an injured leg, and friend, came to Hico and Iredell they were hunting a Dr. McNeil. Must have had civil War connections. Will close and let you figure out what this has to do with your querry, thought you might be interested. With this and $4.00 you can gedt a Dairy Queen hamburger, but it does stir the imagination. Take care, Charles A. Dear Joe, Marilynn Mills Ewers book , begun as a Three Way PTA project of history of all communities in Three Way School District, East Erath County, quotes from May/June 1992 issue of American Geneaology Magazine, published by James Plyant of Stephenville concerning the Crockett family and their feud with the Beaches, when one crockett shot from under his horse's neck and killed Tyne Beach. The Grand Jury cleared Mr. Crockett and he moved to Quannah, Texas Cage Beach followed him and married his daughter in Quannah. Later, Cage and Crockett went hunting and Cage Beach came in and reported Crockett was killed accidentally. Nothing else was done. Crockett had shot at Tyne Beach's left nipple and mised an inch or so. John Crockett was a Tennessee Rifleman who served under Jackman, an officer under Quantrell. After Civil war they went to Old Mexico until after reconstruction, as carpetbag rule ignored Lincoln's blanket pardons. John and party refused to pay Ferry at Rio Grande and cleared old shallow crossing. An armed band forced them to use ferry for $10.00 A few years later, the gang leader was running a toll bridge and Crockett demanded the $100.00 he said he would someday claim. He got the money and raced away on Tennessee Trail. We would assume he used a gun to recover his money with interest. Relation of John and James Crockett and Davey Crockett, Alamo hero, is not known but some are buried in Beach Cemetery, Old abandoned Pony Creek Church Cemetery in front of present Pony Creek Baptist Church, or behind it in "New" Pony Creek- Box Cemetery, or in Mitchell Creek, Cedar Point, Rocky Point, and seems like some are in Indian Creek Cemetery behind Pleasant Hill (Chigger Hill) Methodist Church on Hwy 281 to Hico. Davey Crockett's wife is buried in Acton Cemetery, Hood County, not far from Erath County Squaw Creek. This is the cemetery where a boy was left for dead by his mom's boy friend. His sister was killed and he lived to testify against the killer.(Within the last 2 years) The Crockett School between Selden and Pony Creek (now gone) was across the road from where the head of Mr. Snow's stepson was found in a tow sack by Elvis Riggs. I have heard him tell some of the story. Mr. Snow had dismemberred his wife, stepson, and mother in law, put them under his house, and was burning them in his fireplace when the head was found. The crowd was so large at the trial that the walls at balcony level in present Stephenville Courthouse began to crack, and large steel rods were added to hold walls straight. Great Uncle Ed Fleming taught there once. He caught 2 or 3 boys chewing tobacco and spitting through a knothole. He sent them to the pump to wash their mouth. Then he told them to chew, put hands on knees, and spit 10 times each. Each miss was followed with a swing of the paddle, in the presence of other students. This school hired several young Tarleton grad students who thought they wanted to be teachers. Next time you go into the cellar like record rooms in Stephenville courthouse basement, or catacombs.look at rock colums and remember this. Ah, Good Old Erath- so calm and peaceful.Until 1950-s no one ever locked their doors. We had small chunks of bacon disapear from our smokehouse, but no one ever took much- just enough to survive during the depression. You mentioned the Indian connection- Most of Erath County citizens had traces of Cherokee, Choctaw, or other Indian blood or had married some who did. In my family, Cherokee Rolls show Stone, Carey, Copeland & many others as intermarried or to 1/64 blood who claimed Arkansas Land in Cherokee Nation. Remember, Sam Houston's childhood friend John Jolly was in Arkansas & Anglo appearing Cherokee kept Houston out of trouble as he dried out again from drinking. Pres. Houston, Republic of Texas, during Trail of Tears wind down, declared all north and east of Tyler, Texas as Cherokee Reservation, outside the U.S. Pres. Lamar said no reservation, but said those who had farms were welcome to stay if they were loyal to the Republic of Texas. Cherokee County, Texas is far south of this. Eugene Wyly, one of O.C. Wyly's 23 children from Habersham Co. Ga. married a Loudelia Bateman of Mecklenburg County, back East. They married in Stephenville or Breckenridge- recorded in Stephenville. She was on Cherokee rolls in Arkansas. I am descended from Sarah Bateman and James T Stone of Arkansas. These Stones were moving to Huckaby and Pea Ridge, Texas before 1900. The "Pig Trail" they came on is a Federal Park road today from Mena, Arkansas for 45 miles west then south through Oklahoma , crossing Red River at a shallow crossing and dodging the swamps and Caddo Lake . >From there through Greenville, Texas or Dallas it is a good travel area to Stephenville. Seems one was a teacher in Huckaby or Dublin area. Seems Hugh lawson was a teacher at Huckaby or Oakdale, where mom attended school. Dean Lawson, a former Baptist minister attends church with us at Hewitt Baptist. He teaches a class of older people. His kids are still in school. (Hewitt is a town of 10,000 plus, between Waco and Lorena), Texas. - McLennan County . I found an item of interest to all Civil War buffs- Waco Tribune Herald Monday, oct.12, 1998 about a living son of a Civil War Vet in Moody, TexasIt is in the Brazos Living section- 50 plus section, page 6c. Alexander said his dad would enter a room and if two lamps were burning, he blew one out to save money. My Great Grandmother Moxley would not quilt at night by candle- it was too expensive, she said in a letter to her daughter in Mary Hardin Baylor College, Belton, Texas, charterred by the Republic of Texas along with Baylor Men's College at Independence, Texas. Alexander is the second true son in the loal Felix A. Robertson Post camp 129, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Many Texas County Seats had a Confeterate Veterans Caampgrounds used for picnics , rodeos, & ect. Some such as Mexia are still in use. The camp in Hillsboro is just across the Hwy 22 from the Hill College Confederate Research Center and Audie Murphy Gun museum. Col. Harold Simpon, retired USAF was a director of the center, which has extensive Hood' Texas Brigade records. A Factory Outlet Mall of about 100 stores is a few blocks away on I-35 south of the I-35 East (Dallas) and West (Fort Worth) split., in case the wife wants to shop and you do the research. Downtown antique stores and the restored Hill County Courthouse are worth seeing. The Alexander story blew my mind I had great or great Great Grandads Wyly, Copeland, Moxley, Hipp, Carey, & Stone in the Civil War. all on the Confederacy, but Great Grandma Mary Ann Fleming Moxley had a brother, Jerry Fleming who served in the Us. Army of Northern Aggression, and left for Colorado, then Alaska after that. Anyone ever hear of Jerry? We have found no trace. Happy Hunting Charles Augustine Wyly James Newton Alexander enlisted in the Civil War 3/17/1863. Dear David & Dawn, Yes, I have heard of this treasure and disapearance. Think it was in the series of Erath County Historic Calendars published by Town & Country Bank, Stephenville, and written by Dan Young, history teacher now at Hico, Texas High School. I attended Stephenville High School, 1944-46 with Joy Nell French. There were other French families in Duffau and Hico. There two in Hamilton on old Stephenville road, 3 in Hico, one in Stephenville, phone book. You can find them in Internet phone books or I can send them if you want them. Never heard of the Duffau Creek being called a river. The main Duffau Creek starts in Evans and Wyly and neighboring land 8 miles East of Stephenville and passes through Duffau to the Bosque River near Iredell. Some call the Prairie or Hurley Branch of the Duffau the Little Duffau, but the Little Duffau Baptist Church and Salem School are between Duffau town and Clairette, near the present Dutch owned dairies- on opposite side of the main creek. These streams had many cold water springs and sandrock and gravel swimming holes in the 1940's. It was a Federal Stream stocked with fish. The bosque above Hico sometimes almost dried up- Greens Creek did. The Duffau an East Bosque ran the Bosque to Lake Waco. , then into the Brazos. My Grandad Henry A. Wyly used to tell about being converted in a 2 week "Protractive Meeting" or Revival and the last day of the Little Duffau meeting, the Evangelist called the Pastor down to the front and announced he had head knowledge of the Bible, but had been converted and convicted by his own preaching. He and Grandad were baptized together in the Little Duffau Creek. Dinasour bones have been found in the Duffau sandrock between Selden and Three Way. Tales of hidden treasure by jesse James persist in 2 areas near Johnsville and East Waco, where heavy equipment dug for a safe two years ago. They claimed the safe had papers to prove a Jesse James story and it would move on the imaging machines when digging equipment was used, It is in soupy quicksand type mud whis 90 feet deep on East end of the suspension bridge- the Balconies Fault line. The East end is built on large cedar logs made into a raft and sealed from decay by airtight mud. Grand used to say the rain on his front porch went down Sims Creek to the Bosque. The rain on the back porch went (and still does, the years it rains that much) goes down the main Duffau. Stop at the Koffe Kup Kafe and you will see historic photos (Hico) including a mass baptizing in robes in Cemetery Hole at Duffau. I have wondered if I had been dropped off the list too as I have not heard anything from Erath cnty in a long time. Got one yesterday so I woke up. I found a site that is very interesting to say the least and may be a place to look beacause it has hundreds and hundreds of names and details of lots of folks. This is really a scrapbook that a lady kept for years and years. It it made up of old newspaper clippings from 1880 thru 1930 however since some of this is obituaries it will have details of some pretty old people and events. Since Temple and Belton are really not too far away you might just find someone. I have not read all of it but I will. Let me know if you find one you are looking for since I like success stories. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/nannie.htm Dene Weathersbee in Sour Lake, Tx. dweather@gte.net
