Hi, I just sent a note to Waymon Dees and had a paragraph avout the Roberson Stage Lines (I mispelled it Robinson) . My Uncle Joe Evans drove one of their "Robinson Stage Lines" buses. I remember the old Graham Paige and other "Stretch Jobs" wit luggage racks on the back, and in an open rack on top of the bus. They also had mail contrtacts. I think Uncle Joe was raised by his Uncle Cleve, who became a chiropractor in his later years. Several Evans folk are buried in Pony Creek(Box) old and new cemeteries, the Mitchell Creek cemetery, Selden(Hatchett) Cemetery, Indian Creek south of Stephenville, and Stephenville cemeteries. When the Roberson Stage lines and routes and contract mail sold out to Bowen, their headquarters was in San Angelo or Brownwood, home of Camp Bowie (WWiCamp Bpwie was west of Fort Worth in Benbrook). Uncle Joe moved to San Angeloand made the run from San Angelo to Fort Worth. Bowen sold out to Continental, which consolidated with Trailways - Continental Trailways, which was in West Dallas for home base. Greyhound has gobbled them all up now . Bus freight in the oil fields and to small post offices was big money in Uncle Joe's days with the Robersons. I used to go with mom to see her sister, Effie Carey Evans. We stopped at the bus shops a few times. They had grease pits under the busses when they parked them for service. Was Autrey Roberson or the Johnsville Robersons your family ? I attended school with one- red headed and freckled faced. Seemas one married a Goodman- a relative of the Mills and Little families. One of my South Carolina ancestors was a Polly Mills Copeland. My first cousin, Wayne Evans has a sister in Abilene. he is in Dallas and used to work for the old Red Ball Express trucking co. He said he had never been able to trace his dad 's ancestors positively out of Erath County but wants to. Am I on the right track? Hi, I sent some info on the Ewing family to someone last week. Was it you? My info came from notes and family group pages of the Sevier family Histpry (Gen. & Tenn. Gov. John Sevier), published 1961 . The Ewings are a subdivision of the Clan McLachlan of Scotland.Ewing was the second son ofFergus . This group was involved in carrying the Stone of Destinyfrom the Hill of Terrah in Ireland to Scotland . This stone was brought to London by Mary Queen of Scotts and placed under the coronation chair in Westminister Abbey and in 1998 was returned to Glasgow, Scotland . Scottish and Irish records and tradition say this stone was brought from the Jerusaleum Temple to Ireland by Jeremiah the Prophet and he crowned his daughter Queen of Ireland after .....................tamar Tephi sat on and was crowned 580 BC. These Irish were descendants of Nail Mor, the Egyptian Princess who found Moses in the Bullrushes in a basket . The Nile River was named for her and when the pharoah that did not know Joseph and his God took over, she fled to Ireland to escape execution as a possible rival to the new Pharoah. John Ewing had 2600 acres in County Donnegal, Kilmore, Scotland in 1680. BOWEN-BROWN- Boone Brown ran a tire and Appliance store in Stephenville 1940's thru 1960's. He was a Deacon in Stephenville First Baptist, I think. Another Brown married Elmer Johnson, 1930's, Selden and her mother lived with them. in 1940's. For Bowen family, try Brownwood,Brown County, Texas. My Uncle Joe Evans drove Robinson Stage Graham Page and other "Stretch Job" busses with 5 or more seats and open luggage racks on top- from Stephenville to Fort Worth. BOWEN bus lines bought the Robinson Stage routes, busses, and mail contracts and closed the Stephenville shops. Jncle Joe Evans and Aunt Effie Carey Evans moved to San Angelo and he made the run from San Angelo to Fort Worth, hauling many Camp Bowie Brownwood soldiers. In the 50's or 60's Bowen sold to Continental , headquarterred in West Dallas and Uncle Joe moved to Ennis, Texas and made the Fort Worth run daily until he retired. For the Kuykendalls, (pronounced Kirkendall) check the following: 1. Texas State Library- at least one Kuykendall was an officer in Sam Houston's Texas Army and had a roll in the Texas Constitution and Declaration of Independence. These are listed in Rolls of the Sons of The Republic of Texas, an actove State organization today. 2. Try Austin's Colony or old records of old Milam County. Waco was soon organized with McLennan County. Bosque County and Erath County records were once kept in Waco or Gatesville, near Fort Gates. Erath County had some records in Bosque County. 3. My Great Grandmother was Ella Atalissa Hatchett Wyly. One of her sisters married a Bosque County Kuykendall- there was a small clan of them in Bosque County. The Kuykendall Land and Cattle Company, up to a few years ago, had an office in downtown Clifton and sometimes trucked their cattle to Wyoming for summer pasture, allowing their Texas grazing to recover. Hope this helps, Charles Wyly. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Dear Mr. Wyly: I thouroughly enjoy reading your posts. My mother's family, the Robersons, lived in Erath Co. (Duffau, Seldon, and Stephenville) since the 1850's. Her father, Arthur Roberson, operated an early bus line between Stephenville and Fort Worth. I wonder if you have any recollections about them. John Roberson Mackey ROBERSON/EVANS/COX/ALLARD
Greetings, I would think the Alexander lodge consolidated with Dublin, or Stephenville. If it had been Clairette, I would have said Hico, Hamilton County. Alexander and Clairette are both on hwy 6 from Hico to Dublin. Ask a friend who is in the lodge or check with the nearest lodge secretary and tell them what you sent meand they should help you. The Lee Lockwood Masonic library is in Waco and they have a secretary- librarian for much of Texas. Try writing J.T. Duke, 1749 Wychewood, Abilene , Texas 79605. He is or was the Texas Secretary of Masonic Lodges. He can help or tell you where to look, maybe. Hi, was checking my Sevier Family History and finall found a Major Martin and a Capt. James Elliott served in the Battle of Boyd's Creek campaign to remove hostile Indians from Tennessee. Col. John Sevier was comander acting on Gen. Andrew Jackson.s orders and Col. Arthur Campbell, a cousin of Col. William Campbell who was at King's Mountain with Col. Sevier and Col Ben Cleveland and Col. Shelby. This was reported to Governor Thomas Jefferson by letter. 1/14/1781. and Col. Arthur Campbell said Capt. James Elliott was a gallant young man and the only injury in the battle. Apparently on Dec. 28, 1780. They had visited Nancy Ward, beloved Woman of the Cherokee Blue Peace city of Refuge for all and they had burned old Etowa with a James Carey as scout/interpreter/recruiter of scouts. My mother was a Carey.. Ever an old person say Etewa? I have. This refers to the Glory days of old Etowa. Bet some who said it as a by word did't know what it meant. . P. 313 lists a Jo Ann Marie, Chandley , a Sevier descendant in Kansas City married Marshall Elliot & had 5 children. It lists 2 other Elliott women who married Sevier men- one in 1840.s and one in 1900's., both in Tennessee. Hope this helps- if I see any Erath County Elliotts will let you know Thanks Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Dear Sir. My GGGrandfather and his second wife Elizabeth West Boyles lived in Erath County from about 1880s until his death Sept. 6, 1892 in the Alexander Comunity. They are buied in the Alexander Cemetery. My question is: he was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge in Alexander. Where are those old records I am hoping where was a written investation that would tell me who his parents are. He was born in NC. Thanks Helen
Charles, I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy reading your posts. You never cease to amaze me with the wealth of information you are able to supply, not just historical information, but those little tidbits that I, personally, love to read. How in the world is it that you know so much about the residents of Erath Co? Please continue to post, and know that at least one person really looks forward to reading what you write (even if it doesnt apply to me and mine). Now, on to my question. I don't know if I have posted this, or if you will be able to help me at all. I am trying to find any information on my gggggrandfather Hugh S. ELLIOTT. According to the information I have found, he was born in Missouri in 1849. By 1870 he was in Navaro Co, living with another family, not married. By 1874 he was living in Erath Co. (listed on the tax records). He had a son born 1873, not sure where, and my ggggrandmother, Mary Ida ELLIOTT born 1875. Her death certificate lists her mother as being Betty ROBERTS, b. Arkansas. Betty died sometime between 1875 and 1879 when Hugh remarried. I have not been able to find her listed in any of the cemetery books that I have looked at, nor any information on when or where they married. Hugh died in 1924 and is burried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. So...do you have any tidbits for me? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Kisha Dante charles a Wyly wrote: > I forgot one. Charles, I really enjoy your post about the old days in Erath County as my Dads family came from there. He was raised there and in Hood. i find the stories real interesting. Wanda Blair Ruby
I forgot one. When Charles Pettit was running the Flat Top Ranch between Walnut Springs and Chalk Mountain, a Roberts was the working foreman. He had 2 sons who attended Meridian High School. Hi, When I was in high school, Mont Thomas was sheriff and his chief deputy was "Blackie" Martin. I think they were in office when a neighbor had a flashback to France and battles of WW1 and killed his wife and daughter, thinking they were German soldiers. A Model A or B Ford patrol car warned us to leave our house with no lights while much of the neighborhood hid in fear. This sheriff may have been a Hassler, not sure. A deputy came back without lights, walked towards our house, and called dad's name, then told us to drive to Selden without lights and spend the night at Grandad's without lights which might attract a shellshock victim. The man was dead at the time, but we did not know it. He was a good neighbor and had worked for Erath County grading roads for years. a local boxer was "Sonny Boy" Roberts, all in Stephenville.Think they were all related, but didn't know Mr. Roberts very well . Dad knew Mont Thomas and Mr. Martin. His son has been on this net a few months ago seeking Martin info. My Uncle Emmett Carey moved to Fort Worth and he and a Jack Martin ran the 23rd Street Garage off North Main near the Old Spagetti Warehouse in the old Armour packing company slaughterhouse. They handled repos and repairs from a West 7 th car dealer and sold them across the street. I worked there a few days while at Convair. Bill Martin was an air force pilot in World War II. He and a friend bought an old bomber, installed a water tank, and flew fresh fish from the coast for the Zuider Zea. he had 2 or 3 restaurants and , after retirement, built the Bill Martin's seafood restaurant and motel and station south of Burleson, Texas. , now run by his nieces or granddaughters. "Son" Martin of Venus, Texas was his kin and had a large garage where he serviced cars, trucks, and school busses. R.A. (Bud) Martin lives at the duffau Creek in Three Way School Dist. and he and wife Fannie are 90+. Son Harley is now an Assembly of God minister in Haltom City and his church did run a rest home. Brother Bud Jr. lives in Cleburne, and daughter married a Robinson. They live at Selden. Bud and Fannie moved from a farm adjoining the LBJ ranch near Johnson City, Texas. Don't know the connection, if any, but Lyndon Johnson's aunt was a Martin. Martin Brothers ran a gas station , wholesale auto parts, and sometimes bus station 1 block from Stephenville Courthouse Square on Fort Worth hwy. The loop around town hurt most business in that area. 1930's into 1970's. George L. Martin was an immigrant from England. he and his wife lived on Glen Rose Hwy about 2 miles from the new loop. Walter Syer, 1862-1937 was an English immigrant fromLongham, England who settled in Skipper's Gap- area of Erath County between Stephenville and Glen Rose. and bought 375 acres of McDermit ranch before the cedar had spread that far , partially due to birds and fences making roosts where open prairie and gravel hills had only post oak groves for roosts. .I know there are probably hundreds of Martins, but maybe these might be a link you need. Sorry I can't remember more. happy hunting Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Hello, This question is for Mr. Wyley, Do you know anything of the Roberts family? My gggrandfather was James K. Polk Roberts and he filed a pension application from Stephenville in 1899. Hi, I know the name. Check your Stephenville and Dublin phone books on yout Telephone directory server on the net. Strange one should have the first name of Carey- that was my mom's maiden name. My great Uncle was John Bolton Moxley. Wonder where the Bolton came from?? Hi, I have a smattering of ignorance about some of these names and enough to raise a lot of qyestions about others. Willet My wife attended Clyde High School. Slim Willett attended there before she left Pettit (Levelland) Texas. He ran a battery shop in Abilene and was supposed to have written "Don't Let the Stars get in your Eyes" made famous in the 1950's by Kay Star & others.. He was well known in Clyde- Abilene area and well liked, but never wrote another hit song. . Cook There are a few Cook families in Stephenville who own Cook Building Supply and a Selden farm. One married my mom's first cousin-David Carey. The founders of the business were barbers in Glen Rose. One may have been a mechanic, also. Ms. Urcy Cook was an English teacher in Walnut Springs High in 1960's and her niece Natrelle Hedrick Young is a publications director at Tarleton State University. I taught her math and some history. We lived next door to them until we bought a house. Same family as the Glen Rose group? Don't know. Good hunting grounds for research , including Stephenville and Tarleton State University libraries. Gentry The historic Gentry Bridge is a few miles downstream from Stephenville on the Bosque. Today you turn and go back. There was an excellent swimming hole there- the sight of end of school parties and WW2 farewell parties for draftees. One of these Gentrys married a Garner at Selden and one ran the 4 line Selden switchboard- a local cooperative with wall phones and combinations of longs and shorts for each number. Think I have photos of some Gentrys mom & dad attended school with. Padgett There a bunch in Waco- some spell it Padgitt. We lived by a Padgett in Brandon, Hill County, Texas who ran a store on White Rock Creek and moved it to Hwy 22. It is now closed now. He had a son, a wife, and a brother there. In Waco, some Padgitts we attended church with at Woodway First Baptist were talented musicians and business folk. They claimed no kin th some others here. In the 1800's Tom Padgitt ran a sadle and harness factory in East Waco. He was instrumental in starting Paul Quinn College,A>M>E> Methodist the oldest Black college west of the Mississippi. This college has moved to the old Bishop (Baptist) College Campus in Dallas. Most of the campus buildings are unused and for sale. . Mr Padgitt wanted his workers trained to do skilled work at all levels. There still is a small Waco saddle shop, but later generations changed to photography and a camera store and sells to many schools, including all sorts of Audio- Visual teaching and hobby aids. It was a timely move with the autos and later farm tractors making harness tack obsolete except for rodeo type events. Howard Tim Howard attended Tarleton College and is now living in Hewitt, Texas & I see him at church regularly.Think he grew up farther West towards Lubbock. He has just started his geneaology research. He drove for Poston feeds while attending Tarleton. There were other Howards in the Pony Creek- Cedar Point - Rocky Point area. I haven't seen some of them in 50 years . Used to see them at church or singings at Cedar Point- Rocky Point & surrounding areas. Should be several in Stephenville phone book. Copeland- my Great Grandparents were Charles Madison Hipp (South Carolina German) and Sarah Copeland, Scotch Irish and posibly a dash of Cherokee- they were married in Clinton, Old Laurens District, South Carolina.in the Huricane Baptist Church. The Huricane cemetery has many of their Hipp, White, Dillard, Nabors- Neighbors ,Vaughn-Vaughan kin. John Copeland, Presbyterian elder of Duncan Creek Presbyterian before 1750, is buried at Duncan Creek between Newbury and Huricane church. He was in Rev. War. He is my direct ancestor and his pastor was once Rev. Balch of Greenville, College, Greeneville, Tennessee. he rode horseback from Greeneville to ordain Elders in Duncan Creek. Another pastor who updated psalms acceptable for singing was a John Kennedy. They dressed frontier style, similar to Indians. Since they were not British Episcopal bluebloods, there older records are in 1 of 2 Mecklenburg County courthouses in area once claimed by Va. and North Carolina, not in the present county seats or State capitols. . The Scottish Presbyterians (State church of Scotland) were given land between the coast and the mountains as a buffer from roving Indian attacks. The above Hipp has 48 pages on the Internet now from Stephan Hipp (Hepp) and his 2 brothers from 60 mikes south of Manheim, Germany with a British King's land grant. I have a 1937 Copeland Family tree and history passed out at their rotating reunions in Greenville, S>C>, Clinton, S.C. or Greer, S.C. They had my name and several cousins my age in it, including the children born in Nashville- Hope , Arkansas. A Copeland researcher on the Bosque River north of Waco has recently completed a 2" book of Copeland history and says we are not kin. I think she is wrong. McClennan county is loaded with Copelands. Check your Carolina Cherokee Rolls on this one and you will see why Rev.. Kenneth Copeland boast s of Cherokee heritage, Many claimed Arkansas Cherokee Nation land before the Trail of Tears- see Tahlequah or other Indian records. Grandmother's Copeland cousin settled in Huckaby- Pea Ridge area of Texas between Stephenville and the much larger coal mining town of Thurber, Erath County, Texas. Winningham? Went to High school with "Bulldog" and "Pup" Willingham 1940's, Stephenville. Believe they both played for Tarleton and Texas A&M Reeder- There was a Bose Reeder who was an Erath County politician in 1940's. Think he also had a ranch west of the Bosque River. Mullins- was in Army, 1950-52 with a Mullins, about 6' or more, from Ennis or South Dallas area. Sellers- One was a real estate agent in Stephenville. Green- Several have lived on Hwy 67 east of Stephenville in Welcome Valley or Rabbit Center or Evergreen comunity. They were electricians and country Musicians. Jimmy was younter than me. Also, one .Green, a retired Waco firefighter, runs an antique store at West, Texas on I-35 Is this Allerd or Allred? Gues you know one Texas Governor was named Allred. The Allerd Reunion was the largest and longest running one in Oakdale Park in Glen Rose. Dad went every year before 1950. He said were distant kin, but I can't see it on several lines back to 1750's. Possibly they are Sevier or Cleveland or Yowell descendants- but it looses me. Smith- have known a few hundred, no connection known, except that Kate Smith, the singer, was a grandchild of Oliver Cromwell Wyly, as was my grandad,. O.C. was once sheriff of Habersham County, Ga. among other things. Price- the ones I knew personally were Nolan and Travis Price of Stephenville. One married Balma Gristy, our neighbor, and they were Gospel singers and musicians. Happy hunting, Charles A. Wyly . . ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
