Here is a useful site that will give you the information on each Texas County, date it was formed, parent county, county seat, and size in area. The main site this is off of is "Lone Star Junction": http://www.lsjunction.com/ Then go to "Online Database". If you've never checked this site before, it has many interesting sites, as well as the original Texians, and is searchable by surname. In looking for information on Erath Co. I recently came across a book of people who had registered their brand with the state of Texas. I found my ggggrandfather's name listed in the book. I was wondering if anyone out there know how one would go about getting a copy of the brand? Also, does anyone out there know if there is any valuable information on the registration form (if there even is such an animal)? I quess what I am asking is, is this an avenue worth following and if so what do I need to do? Who do I need to write to? Thanks in advance for the help Kisha Dante
Hi, The Pond name rings no bells. The Clark name does- there were more Clarks in U.S. history than Carter has oats or liver pills. I am descended from Sarah Hawkins Clark who was Col. and Gov. John Sevier, granddaughter. She told her grandkids who died in Erath County that she was married in her grandad's home whene she lived after her mom Elizabeth Sevier Clark died when Sarah was 7. Several of these Clarks settled near Crockett, Texas and one married one of Great Grandad's half Brothers in Erath County, Texas. His mother was Martha Catherine Mitchell, descended from German and/or Scottish . She wasthe 3rd wife of Oliver Cromwell Wyly of Habersham County, Ga. who had 23 kids. She was also a descendant of Col. Von Moller or Moulder , German, and Capt. John Stuart of Rev. War.and of Col. Ben Cleveland, who was at the Rev. War Battle of King's Mountain with Col. Sevier, Col. Shelby, and Col. Campbell- all State Militia, not George Washington's army. This was the first major win of Rev. War for the Rebels. Major Patrick Ferguson waskilled and some of Col. Cleveland's "Roundheads" or "Bulldogs" tried, whipped, rearranged and marked ears, and otherwise mutioated colonial Tories under Ferguson. Cols. Sevier and Shelby drew swords and stopped the mutioation and suggested they be allowed to live and report to Cornwalis. Shortly after they found him he surrenderred. He was scared to death of these wild Overmountain men with their personal rifles which shot 100 + yards. British Muskets and some of George Washington's would only shoot 45 yards,& so some British dealer sold them to some Mexican named Santa Anna to kill Texans with. Martha Mitchell Wyly is buried off the Pasadena Freeway near Alvin , Texas. Henry Clark was mayor of Stephenville and wore a George Washington haircut. He ran the 6+6 feed store and mill on the back side of the block joining the square on the north and sold it to Marshall Kay, a grandson of Oliver Cromwell Wyly & a Clark descendant. The first name you give is not in Sevier Family History. The Clark connection might be a key to something, Hope so. Hi All. My father S I Pond often talked of his uncle Isaac who ran off to Texas to be a Cowboy sometime before dad's birth 3 Apr 1896. Pointing out that this made him somewhat a childhood hero of his, even though grandpa Samuel did not get along with his brothers and did not keep in touch with the family. So all dad knew was uncle Isaac lived in Texas and that isn't a lot of help. Then one day my son pointed out that I should make some attempt at finding out about our family because I am the last of my generation. Now retired and with a computer I have filled in a lot of the gaps. I even have some on Isaac Newton POND. >From family notes, Bible, etc I find Isaac Newton b 8 Feb 1862, married Dana (or Danie) and died 27 Dec 1958. Her birth date is not given but her death is recorded as 26 Jan 1951. With their names is the note "Buried in Texas I imagine...where they lived." But then over the holidays I was told that Isaac N POND & Dana CLARK were married on 27 Jan 1889 in Erath cty Tx. That they had run a store of some kind while there and some of their issue may still live in the area. Though he thought that they were not now surnamed Pond. Others may be in Muskogee cty Ok but that is a guess. Any help on any of this will be greatly appreciated. To the person who wanted more information about the Thurber Community: Sunday, 24 May 1998 in the Stephenville Empire-Tribune, there was a very interesting article about this community. I beleive it was a full page article, and either that story or possibly a separate one, gave information about a cemetery that served that community. Could someone on the list please tell me where Hickey Cemetery is located. It is supposed to be in Erath County. Lola
Charles Wyly, I need information on Thurber. I have recently heard that my ancestors Bates COX and David FRY worked for T & P Coal in Thurber. What can you tell me about T & P Coal in Thurber? Are there any books or written info on this place? Any information would help. Lola
I forgot one military base about 65 miles from Stephenville, Texas up 377- at Fort Worth (White Settlement) was Carswell Air Base on Lake Worth. It was a Strategic Air Command Base and is now a joint Naval Air Station and reserve training center. Convair (then General Dynamics, now McDonnel- Duglass) Bomber plant was next door. I shared rides with other workers from Stephenville daily. Some came from Dublin & De Leon. It was a 60-80 minute drive. I tried living in Forth Worth, but it took 30 minutes to an hour longer to get to the Boarding houses than to get home. Take care Charles A. The Hancock Cemetery is located near Purvis in Erath County. Located about 7 miles southeast of Dublin, Texas. The cemetery has about 29 graves, 19 marked with field stone (unknown) and 10 with tombstones with names. All the known have been identified except Asa L. Anderson, son of C.H. and B.F. Anderson b Jan. 24, 1875 d August 6, 1876. Need help identifying this family. Those with tombstomes are: Rubie Vera Hancock daughter of T.B. and Ora Carlton Hancock. b May 18, 1897 d July 16, 1898 Charles Martin son of M. & A. Houston b November 227, 1901 d August 6, 1876 (The rest of the Houston families moved shortly after their two children died to New Mexico and some decendants live there now) This Hancock cemetery has been cleared of brush, fenced, and a large sign errected. It had never been fenced to keep cows from walking on the graves and breaking tombstones, hopefully it will be taken care of from now on, if we can keep people interested.
Hi, Jason The women's organization was the Order of the Eastern Star. Normally a lady in this had a husband or dad who was a Mason. My aunt lived with a widow , Winnie Hill, in Fort Worth, after WW2. Winnie was in the Eastern Star and Aunt Mary used to attend some meetings with her. Some of these still visit my aunt since Winnie died last year at age 94. I never visited the barber shop you mentioned, unless it was adjoining Martin Brothers Parts and Station, opposite side of street and half way between Jake and Dorothy's. There were others in that area a few years at a time. You mentioned Arkansas as a possible first home. If they were there before 1900, they either had Cherokee blood or had kin who did. Check some Cherokee rolls of the Cherokee Nation in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. If you could prove that, your kids might be eligible for free college. There is a Blackburn Water wheel grist mill south of Eureka Springs on the War Eagle River, built before 1840, I think It still runs and has a cafe on the top floor. It is beautiful and fertile country east of Simpsonville.- White Water Country is to the north. . These , like some of my ancestors and Will Roger's family and John Jolly, Sam Houston's childhood friend, were ususlly well educated (but not necessarially an abundance of Schoolhousing). The ones who came before the Trail of Tears were intermarried and saw a chance for choice free land in a peaceful frontier and there was some friction between them and the ones on the Trail of Tears, when those on forced marches found some of their best land already occupied by apparent Anglos who were on the Cherokee Rolls. There were several Moores in the Chalk Mountain area. I attended school with some of them. The military bases nearest Stephenville from World 2 would have been Camp Bowie, Brownwood, down U.S.67 from Stephenville (WWi Camp Bowie was a tent camp west of Fort Worth-.) Fort Hood, Texas- down 281 to Hico, Hamilton, and Gatesville,North Fort Hood replaced old Fort Gates. Killeen is the entrance to South Fort Hood and Gray Air Base (Gray is now part of Fort Hood) Fort Hood is the largest Armored training center in the world and has traimed picked groups of leaders from several countries of the workd, and still does. Camp Barkley, Mineral Wells, was about 50 miles north of Stephenville at Mineral Wells, north on 281. Abilene also had an air Base- still does. Men from there have been called several times to go to Iraq. Waco had Rich land Army Air Base in WWi- it's about 100 miles south on hwy 6. (Some say the best thing that ever came out of College Station was Hwy 6- My Aggie son does not agree). Waco High, the fair grounds, and Madison Cooper airport and part of Lake Waco are on old World War I Military base. One old hanger built before 1918 is now a boat storage and repair on the opposite side of the lake from Waco. In WW2 Waco had James Conally Air Force Base, and a touch and go strip at Prairie Hill used by Bergstrom pilot training. Conally runway could handle B-36 bombers- not many could and Chrysler built a factory to modify aircraft and add electronic guidance systems to the President's and other planes, some of which are built in Italy. On the other side of the runway the old hangers and homes and Barracks are the core home campus of Texas State Technical College. The Prairie Hill strip is now an emergency landing strip and home of drag races and a truck driving school. It is on the Mexia hwy. Some of Hitler's soldiers, our prisoners, were kept in the Cleburne , Texas football stadiunm under the bleachers, in Hearne, and outside Mexia, Many farmers from Mexia to Malone spoke German and selected prisoners helpped them with all out. farm production for war needs with all young able bodied men in the service. In West Texas some of them re-did an old German Church- see Texas Hiways magazine on the Internet. The Mexia barracks are the Mexia State School for mild to seriously handicapped citizens. You said the Korean conflict- that would have been Fort Hood, Gray AFB, or the Abilene Air Base- all others had closed. We knew a Blackburn in Walnut Springs, Texas who had kids in school and farmed. His daughter was in my wife's Sunday School class 35 or so years ago. Hope this helps. Greetings Friends, I am new here and would like to see if I could get a little info from ya'll... I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather. I have a bit that I've gathered from my family, but am still looking for more (on my Great Grandmother, actually). John A. Blackwood was (as far as we know) not born in Texas. He might have been born in Arkansas. His DOB is Apr 12, 1895. Guessing based on what I know, he married between 1913 and 1935ish to Clara born about 1891. I don't know for sure, but her maiden name might be Moore. John had a brother, Joe who was a fireman in Stephenville. John and Clara had several children one of which is Clara Bell Blackwood (my paternal grandmother). John was a Mason and Clara belonged to the Order of Stars (I think that is what it was called, I might be wrong). John died in Nov 1969. Both are buried in Erath Garden of Memories Cemetery just west of Stephenville. I have been told John was a member of the Assembly of God then converted and attended a Methodist church on McCart in Stephenville. John was a barber and had a shop at 129 N Virginia St just east of the square (a block from Jake and Dorthey's Cafe). Clara Bell went on to marry Bruce Anderson (a serviceman stationed nearby during the Korean conflict). Speaking of which, can anybody help me on the name of that station? I've checked every site I can and none have reference to a base anywhere near Stephenville. As you can see, I do have a lot of info. But there are still hole. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Hi again, Just popped into my mind- there were Pearce and Pierce families in Erath County. Check records for a Pearce written by a census taker or clerk's secretary. We were told at Sevier Reunion in Gatlainburg, Tenn. that some politically correct census takers could barely write their own name. They would remember the nameand whittle knotchea on a stick for men, women, and children and his wife or slave or child would write down the name he said and count the notches as he recited the names. If so, his memory was longer than mine on instant recall of new info. Some would change their name one letter because of an embarasing divorce or Indian marriage. or other family fueds. Not all crimes were comitted against those not kin, such as stealing livestock or dividing inherited property. In Arkansas, the marriages licenses were issued but a marriage was not recorded until the circuit riding preacher turned in his "regular" report of marriages he performed, if he lived to get back and report the last group. Hi, I attended Stephenville High School with A.R. Pearcy- or "Coke" Pearcy. As I remember he was from Bluff Dale- or he was in group of Bluff Dale and Johnsville boys who met at the grocery store nearby during lunch hour. He may have lived in Stephenville some- seems a Pearcy had a tire store in Stephenville. Will forward this to Neil Renfro- he should know this one. Gee Whizzz This must Bowen day on the line. I have made two replies this afternoon on the Bowen Bus lines of San Angelo or Brownwood. They bought out the Roberson Stage line buses, routes, and mail contracts and closed their Stephenville shops. Uncle Joe Evans drove for Robersons and moved to San Angelo to make the Fort Worth runs by Camp Bowie, Brownwood. He raised 2 children there, before Bowen sold out to Continental, then it was Continental Trailways, before Greyhound bought them out. I knew nothing of the Bowen family. My cousins might. Check those other two postings- one to a Waymon Dees and one toJmackey on the Robersons. This help any? I remember the Hancock name but the only one I knew well was Don Hancock of Lacy- Lakeview (Waco). We shared a vocational office in West High School when he was Vocational Counselpr and I was Industrial Cooperative Training Coordinator. We moved to Midway High School in the same summer (Hewitt- Waco). He became Principal, then Superintendent of the Conally Independent School District. He married a Smetak girl from West, Texas and they have 2 or 3 children. He used to stop and eat his summer sack lunches with us when he worked a month longer than I did in Midway.. Hope this helps.
