    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Hi. Dewayne, I was born in the old Reed Cox home at Johnsville where Charlie and Mamie Belcher Davis rented until Grandad Wyly bought it. Our barn may have been the original Reed Cox home- it had been a residence at one time, and had rooms but no ceilings. We milked under the shed that resembled a front porch. George Cox's pasture was across the old dirt U.S. 67 from our house. The Ed Cox I knew was still married to "Aunt Marthy" who used to give us kids walking to school, coughing, a spoon of honey and whiskey. "Uncle Ed" was a beekeeper. Don't ask about the whiskey- may have been from neighbors. I understand a Frances Wallace. Clarkesville, Ga. was the second wife of Gen. James Rutherford Wyly, war of 1812. He and Sarah Clark were divorced after 13 children. He and Frances were raising a young John Cleveland, Absolam's son, about 1850. Frances's daughter was Emily Bradshaw. Henry Wallace lived across the road from State Rep. H. Grady Perry's store at Johnsville on the new U.S. 67. I was told there were 3 Cox brothersin the civil war.. Robert E. cox was a merchandiser and ran R.E. Cox on west side of square at Stephenville. The store is now closed . The Waco branch store closed a couple of years ago, and the one in Fort Worth became a Cox- Stripling store on East lancaster- "The Great White Way" on the Bankhead Highway- U.S. 80, replaced by I-20. Now does I-20 sound all that adventuresome to you? Reed Cox was a farmer. Doc and sister were still at home when I was in Elementary school and Reed was raising his grandson, Dr. Morris Johnson. Guess you know about the Jess Salter tradegy which left Morris an orphan. "Granny " Cox turned us boys in for smoking Bull Durham sack tobacco- that's another story. It cost me a cow and a calf and free pasture until I was 21. I understand the third Cox brother became an Indian agent in Oklahoma and married one of Quannah Parker's daughters. in Oklahoma. One Cox , age 94, had run a Cox jewelery storein Waco for years and missed none until the last year or so. It is still family owned. A Cox grandson from Oklahoma is manager now- no known connection to the 3 brothers, but the present manager looked at me rather puzzled when I told him some of the above. Suzibelle and Ceburne Cox were an outstanding duet in Gospel Singings. , 1940's I can still hear Mrs. Reed Cox in the summer under the Johnsville Church of Christ tabernacle, singing in a high voice- "There's an All Seeing Eye Watching You".Bet you could hear a quarter mile down the creek. -1930's. There was no noise or light polution and the Duffau was safe to baptize in- some drank it on camping trips. Frank Latham, of Stephenville and present Chief of Police here in Hewitt, is part of the R.E. Cox family tree. This church was one locally known place where Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, and Raymond Hamilton their sometimes driver, slept when running from the law. Seems they "lost the law every time they crossed the Brazos. Clyde had camped out on the Duffau with Johnsville and Duffau boys while visiting his Hico kin. Ring any bells, or do you have all of this? The Town and Country Bankers historic calendar by Dan Young has a full page photo of 20 or more neighbors of Reed Cox with cotton sacks picking his cotton while the family was bedfast with Smallpox or some epidemic- In the 1930's some of them had long ponytails and sure could have passed for an Indian. One appears to have a feather in his hair, but we always clowned around putting them in our hatbands. Take care, Charles Wyly. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. Hi, I guess you know where the Evans- Crockett cemetery is- it is not fenced nor maintained. One Gillentine is there or in Rumph - Beech cemetery a few hundred yardas north and is fenced with Rock. The unfenced cemetery was used by Pony Creek Baptist and Box Methodist church and school and lodge hall, a few yards from each other. It is in front of and, to the right of the Pony Creek Church on the hill in a clump of Cedars, I grew up with John Ben Rumph, a Beech grandson. The cows keep the plots clean except for cedar damage and cave ins. Watch for big rattlesnakes. I found one larger than the calf of my leg once, but short- about 4 feet. The new Pony Creek-Box is behind the church and well maintained. The old one needs moving or maintaining. When the Bulldozers cleared some land, John told them to not disturb the old one unfenced. The last I saw the headstones were there and widely spaced- apparently several unmarked graves with fieldstone markers.Ruby Beech Rumph was our first grade teacher at Johnsville. 3. Hi, was putting about 700 hits in folders and wanted to check this one. Had another Hale inquiry. If he was at Comanche and headed towards Proctor, he could have been Stephenville bound- Erath County. Check Stephenville records. County line is between Proctor and Dublin. Also check Mineral Wells, (Palo Pinto County) and Breckenridge (Stevens or Stephens County) and Caddo Indian records in Oklahoma. It was not unheard of for a man in Erath County to vanish- regular church supporters- and be found years later in Palo Pinto with an Indian wife- Caddo, Cherokee, Lipan, or Choctaw., ususlly civilized with mixed ancestry. Grover Hale lived at Selden 1940's. His son Halford would be 70 t0 74 now, if still living. His older sister is. Another Hale built Jimmy Carter style homes in Stephenville. Another lived at Chalk Mountain, Texas, Erath County- some of the girls would be in their 60's now. Before Comanche and Palo Pinto and Stevens Counties were organized some court and records were kept in Stephenville. Federal and State District Courts were in Stephenville after Waco and Meridian ceased keeping them. 1. Re: [ERATH] THURBER
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Hi, Have been busy- taught English as a second language today. Some classee have Asians - only one class today had non traditional Spanish- they were 4 Blaack students. They were the best behaved kids I have seen since the Pre Calculus classes. Will give you sketchy info tonight- have a photo book of Thurber somewhere. a Tackett in Madison, Wisconsin contacted me & I sent her some info. The TP Railroad on the southern Transcontinental railroad tracks in late 1800's developed the Coal mines on the Johnson Ranch between Thurber and Mingus or Caddo or Strawn. It was a high grade coal to get locomotives to California. Acme Brick developed with the mines. The veins were thin but plentiful. At first locals were hired, but since Stephenville had 700 or less and no railroad, they recruited all over Europe and Ireland and brought the immigrants to Thurber- all under 5' tall if they could be found. A six footer would have to work on his knees. Mules pulled the cars to the shafts in the mine and could not always raise their heads above their shoulders. The miners were also at Newcastle Mines near Graham , Texas. The railroad brought Portugese and Czech vegetable and fruit farmers to Clyde, Texas- shallow water in sand. They raised fruit and vegetables for the dining cars. Thurber was a company owned town with 10,000 people plus , Some say 20,000 to 30, 000 in the area. with that many or more spacialized contractors, gamblers, bartenders, and local traders up to and past Mingus- Palo Pinto County- a wet town with the largest bar between Fort Worth and El Paso. It had the first synchronized red lights, treated city water, a complete sewage system, and fire plugs on each town The first city in the U.S. with all this, plus a company store and pay in company credit coupons, discounted if they attended the Italian Opera in Stephenville. at Cage and Crow Opera House. . Some coal was on the surface- no one wanted an underground fire. The miners had an annual habit of striking and getting raises. One strike saw the town fenced with barbed wire and a company of Texas Rangers trying to stop riots. Some young upstart named John L. Lewis was just in time to organize the strike that drove the final nail in the coffin- the Railroad said no raise or they would get Ranger and Desdemona oil to run their trains to California with less labor. Lewis refused to compromise and the mines were closed and 30 days later the workers lost their company houses and jobs in the middle of a desolate spot in Texas. Reminds me of how the last strike at Waco's General Tire Plant closed it in favor of an Indonesian factory with far cheaper labor, Seems that happened in Pennsylvania with Trane Air Conditioning. Texas thanks you, Pennsylvania. . I used to be a member of IAM in Convair Fort Worth, but some unions are worse than than Clayton Williams about shooting themselves in the foot with their own actions. I can't remember any Union leaders take a cut in pay when they cost 10, ooo jobs, as in Thurber. Failures aren't usually in History books. The town today has 3 people and a TP library not open to the public with every resident, miner, brickmaker, fireman, or whatever and which mines he dug and country of origin. Last I heard the city was partly back in the Johnson ranch withTP Railroad, owned by Seagram Whiskey controlled by the Kennedy family, paying property taxes in Stephenville, Texas. There is a Thurber Historical Society in Stephenville somewhere. Check their phone book on Yahoo search engine. on the net. Some coal was recently mined open pit for Chapparal Steel, Midlothian Texas- the leading maker of construction Rebar in the world from old cars. Whei I was in grade school we hauled clean used brick to build barn footings for 5 cents each. Fort Worth and other cities within 100 miles had streets paved with Thurber Brick, some still do. Stephenville and Tarleton State University should have abundant Thurber and Newcastle records. Tarleto had one Central Heating system with underground steam pipes and had Thurber coal for standby fuel in the 1950's. Sometimes Gas lines lost pressure in a bad cold spell. Dan Young's 10 or so Historic calendars for Town and Country Bank have many photos and daily notes of Thurber activities. Did you know that Judge Ben Cleveland of the Old pendleton District had a common punishment for horse stealing- 1. 4 hours with wrists and ankles in British stocks 2. 29 or 39 lashes with a Buggy whip 3 brand a small HT for horse thief in one cheek. 4. 1. Re: [ERATH] Registered Brand
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Hi, The brands were registerred in the County Clerk.s office of the county seat the year of registration, depending on the closest organized county to the east or south, usually. For instance, many of my family marriages in the 1800's were recorded and issued in Meridian, Bosque County even though the men lived in Erath County. Before that they were registerred in Waco, McLennan County. Some marriages family members thought were performed in Graham, Texas are in Stephenville records. Yes, there was one Erath county fire, but the older records in Meridian or Waco were nort affected. Before that it was Milam County all the way to the Red River- Cameron is the present county seat of the present Milam County, South east of Waco on Hwy 77. Look in the Texas Almanac for the date the counties were organized. It is published by the Dallas Morning News every year most of this century. The News is on the Internet- not sure about the Almanac, it may be also. Also, check for brand registrtion in Texas Cattle Raisers Association in Austin, Texas. They have active detectives working today The twin brothers, U.S. Marshalls, now retired, the McManara Brothers recently broke up a livestock theft ring. They had also before retirement, worked at Mount Carmel and on Kenneth McDuff and other murder cases. The theft of cattle and farm equipment today is more common than on the frontier. It does.'t take long for some good dogs to load cattle into a truck and be gone, sometimes leaving cut fences, sometimes they just drive into the pasture. Hogs are no longer worth stealing- too cheap- so don't camp out without dogs and/or a hunting gun on unknown creeks unless you want a Russian Boar or crossbreed to teach you how to climb a tree.
