    1. [ERATH] Erath 1880 Census being transcribed
    2. Janice
    3. While we can't help out with the soundex, we want to annouce that we are beginning work on transcribing the 1880 census. We have a most thankful borrowed microfiche machine (which will work to read microfilm if we rig it) and borrowed film. This will be very slow going. We are awaiting the template and OK from the USGenWeb Census Coordinator for TX, and then we'll get started on it. The 1860 & 1870 census is already being worked on by somebody else. Anybody that has access to microfilms and readers, and has a laptop computer (or yours at home if you have the reader at home), can volunteer to help transcribe any of the U.S. Census'. This is a most worthwhile project! Anyone interested in it can go to this page: http://www.usgenweb.org/census/ Regards, Annette and Janice Erath Coordinators At 07:53 AM 2/5/99 EST, Arkivemom@aol.com wrote: >Does anyone out there have access to the 1880 soundex for TX? My mother says he was born in the Thurber area. Died Dec. 4, 1952, San Diego, CA. WWI and WWII vet. Have located a William E. Pollman, m. My grandfather Louis's middle name was William and Raymond was my fathers middle name. He was from Thurber TX and my mother said he went back there from time to time to visit relatives. My grandmother and grandfather were divorced (if ever married..oh my, a family scandal) before my father was born. He was born in Bremerton WA (no records) when Louis was in the Navy. He met him in the 40's when Louis was a paymaster aboard a ship. I met him once when I was about 7. That's the story....does this match anyone out there. 3. I was in Waco this weekend and also saw the article. I grew up in that school district and they have been planning to buy this acreage for many years. The graves are on the Walker family property and very possible are part of the Walker and Standfield families. The graves will be relocated to the old Standfield Cemetery in Lacy-Lakeview. I feel very confident that every measure is being taken to properly relocate these graves. 3. Hi, i grew up in Johnsville between the Duffau Creek and U.S.67- we called it the main Duffau because of the sandrock and gravel springs and cold swimming holes. The Hurley or Prairie branch of the Duffau may have been longer, but sometimes dried up. Some Holders lived near us. Mrs. Odel Wright across the creek was a Holder. her brother, Jim Bob ran a washateria in Stephenville in 1940-60s approximately. He used to joke about the Box Holder mail in his box- he was Bob, not Box Holder. i grew up and attended school with two of the Wright children Tiptons seem to fall out out of the woodwork since leaving North Carolina 1790's to 1830's. like the Sevier descendants of Virginia and Tennessee and North Carolina. I attend church with one in Hewitt, Texas who says he never heard of the Tipton International farm Equipment and International dealers in Waco and Hillsboro. Texas. I met one Tipton who was running a convenience store in Eastland or Cisco, Texas. He was past 50. I asked him if he was a descendant of Sheriff Tipton and the Tiptonites who arrested my ancestor Col. John Sevier for treason after the Free State of Franklin fell, rejected by U.S. Congress, John Sevier, Gov., a North Carolina Militia Col. He cracked up laughing and said" You must be a Sevier descendant- only a Sevier or Tiptonite would know the story that well". It seems some of Gov. Sevier's sons, brothers, and former soldiers of his began drifting over the mountain for the trial. One horse had an empty saddle. They listened to the charges in court from Sheriff Tipton and the prosecution, the judge declared a recess for water and rest rooms , and Gov. Sevier and supporters calmly walked out to his horse, they mounted, and all calmly rode out of town back to Knoxville with no protest from the sheriff or judge. This time the G.T.T. on the court records meant Gone to Tennessee, over the "hill", if the name was in use, not "GONE TO TEXAS",as it was often recorded in Tennessee and Georgia. A small unmarked cemetery in McLenna County is now being researched . it has 4 to 6 visible headstones- incarved fieldstone north of Waco. They are thought to be pioneer graves. of 1870-1880's but no one jnows who. The land is needed by the Connally Schools expansion , Don Hancock, Superintendent. Michael Bradle of the Lampassas, Texas firm called American Archeology is waiting final approval to fhe Texas Historical Commission to move the graves with wooden coffins to a new site after Baylor University Forensic Labs try to learn more about those buried there. They will be re- interned at the Stanfield- Walker cemetery in Lacy- Lakeview, north of Waco. POSSIBILITIES: deceased cowboys buried on the Chisolm or more correctly, the Texas Trail? See Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, Waco Tribune Herald front page Take care Charles A. Wyly Quarantined pioneers moving west before becoming ill? Paupers buried at County expense? Executed criminals or lynch victims of an overzealous vigilante Posse? . Probably not black- the rural cemeteries of much of Hill and McLennan County containing more than one race had no evidence of a fence, except the oldest ones in Waco proper. One cemetery in Hill county with 12 or more graves- across the creek from the biracial cemetery near Brandon- Bynum, Texas was supposedly of a white group accused of being hores thieves by a vigilance committee or posse. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. Hello to researchers, I know this is Erath County pages- Erath County records were kept in Waco- McLennan County tax office for a year or so. and many south of Stephenville had marriage records in the Meridian, Bosque County Courthouse, including my Great Grandad Robert Augustine Wyly of Selden and some of his siblinbgs. John B. Erath, Stephenville surveyor, had a home in Waco when he wasn't surveying or fighting Indians with Texas Rangers. TODAY'S WACO TRIBUNE HERALD front page tells of an unmarked pioneer small frontier cemetery which is being moved so the Conally Independent School District, Don Hancock, Supt. can buy it for a new campus. (north of Waco on old Chisolm Trail & I-35) South of West, Texas and east of Steinbeck Bend of the Brazos and Bosque rivers. . Field stone headstones have no names- apparently 12 graves, more or less. A Killeen Archeology contractor is sending all remains to Austin to determine race, sex, age and health of corpses that are found. WHO ARE THEY? can the DNA be tested of partially decomposed bodies in wood coffins and could someone with missing ancestors have theirs checked for a match? There were no fences separating white from black burials in Hill County 30 years ago, such as jasper had. Waco once had one by Fort Fisher, but it was cleaned and removes a few years ago. Separate cemeteries were either paupers buried by the county or executed or lynched criminals of the same race as the other cemeteries. Thought you might want to know and post. 3. Hi, had to think on this one. Had to fix my daughter's car- was too involved for her 17 year old son and he didn't have the time. There used to be a Meek who farmed in the Black Stump \Valley- Duffau area. He was a neighbor to a Will Fouts. One or both of them ran a grain ghresher in 1940, s or 1950's. If you are useing Yahoo for phone and town lookups, remember, a large section of Erath County has mail from Hico post office in Hamilton County. Not sure how their phones are carried today. In 194o's to early 1950.s there was an Albert J. Meek Packard dealership in Fort Worth on West 7 th across from Montgomery Wards Mail order & retail. Water went 4 stories over his cars and business during the last major Trinity River flood. You can reach Betty Meek of Hillsboro, Texas, Hill County at the Hill College Library, the Audie Murphy Gun Museum and/or Confederate Research Center. She used to attend Central Baptist Church there. Will send more if I find anything. Take care Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. Hi, It just occured that at a recent antique tractor and engine show I saw a Farquar Tractor. Don't remember where they were made but a local antique dealer could tell you. They were made around 1900, more or less- about the same time as the Oliver Hart Parr and Rumley Oil pull and Aultman Taylor tractors. Find the location of their factory and you will possibly find some Farquar family descendants today. I think I sent you what I knew about some Sanders families in Stephenville, Texas, Hewitt, Texas, and the Dublin- Hico area. If you don't have it, let me know.
