    3. Hi, Re Morrow & Baker, the only Morrow I knew was the youth pastor at Hewitt Baptist Church, Hewit (Waco), Texas. He attended Baylor and Southwestern Seminary an the last I heard he was a church planter north of Denver. I can get his address if you want it. , . In the 1940-50sOran Baker was sheriff of Hood County- Grandbury. a former stunt man in Tom Mix & other western movies was the night watchman there. He needed no help to take in an unarmed drunk. In the 1960.s there were two or three Baker brothers in Walnut Springs, Texas. One farmed uo the Flat Top Ranch Road towards Erath County. I taught his son math & History & he finished two degrees at TCU in Physics. One lived near Willow Springs towards Meridian, He had 2 daughters in school. Ronnie Baker rebuilt pianos while in high school and became an Episcopal pastor in Hamilton. He is now semi retired due to health. The widow of one of these bakers and her married daughter now live in Hewitt. 3. Hi, Re. Pruitt & Leatherman Cled Pruitt was one of my teachers in the "Big" (4 &5 grades). he had a 1937 Ford Coupe . We went to baseball games with other rural schools, part sitting 2 deep in the front and part of us sitting in the back with the trunk lid up. We coughed up chalk & gravel dust the first 4 or 5 innings. One Pruitt today runs a Glen Rose Real Estate office with a Hico branch. He is on the internet. Chalk Mountain hills are popular with some American Airlines pilots for luxurious home locations. M. D. Pruitt was our Pony Creek pastor while he attended the seminary. There was a Pruitt Ranch. Some of them lived at Selden. the Box (Pony Creek) church was active 120 years but is inactive now. He became a pastor of a large and still growing church in Mesquite, Texas and his men there restored and painted the Pony Creek church building. Think he is semi retired now. He once said he used to stand outside at Pony Creek and look across Rough Creek & the Paluxy towards the present Comanche Peak nuclear plant and see smoke from 4 or 5 stills. Times change- Propane doesn't smoke. Tennessee habits were hard to break. Some moonshiners did not allow their kids to drink until they were 18 and they were good neighbors. I never had a problem with a child of a moonshiner or a bootlegger, . Can't say that about some legal club owners. Ever hear of the 40 gallon Baptist Church in West Virginia, where they were building a church and members pledged 40 gallons of Moonshine a year as their tithe to the budget? It was legal then and roads from Knoxville to Virginia & S.C. were single Indian trails for 1 pack mule only. Corn in the jug was easier to transport and sell in a jug than a wagon load of ear or shelled corn. I have photos of Marable and other schools in them (from books) with Pruitts in them. Also, The Leathermans lived at Cedar Point. I remember two or more brothers with large families. We attended Cedar Point singings and sometimes a revival with dinner under the Brush Arbor. One Leatherman from there married a sister of my Double Cousin 's husband Melvin Tarpley. Christine Leatherman married a Mills- brother to Marilyn Giesekie Mills Ewer's first husband. Christine worked for Jake (Roach) and Dorothy's cafe in Stephenville for over 30 years. Will try to recopy the Cedar Point history to make it dark enough to read. Many Leathermans were in the photos. 1. Re: [ERATH] Cynthial Jane CAMPBELL
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Hi, The Campbell's left very dim tracks in Erath Couty I knew. I searched H. Grady Perry's Grand Ole Erath, and Marilyn Ewer's PTA project on a history of the Three Way Schoiol District (Marable. (Greasy), Chalk Mountain, Pony Creek, Mitchell Creek, Crockett, Johnsville, Oden or Odom Chapel(North of Walnut Springs) Pizarro, Skipper's Gap, Maratheals Gap, & neighboring areas and did not find the name. have a Cedar Point Centenial book done in blue ditto or Hectograph Jelly pan. Will chack it if a Zerox will darken it and make it readable. Now for better news. I remember one set of Campbells- one rancher, a Campbell, married a Morgan girl from the Morgan ranch between Walnut Springs, Morgan, and Brazos Point- Eulogy- 5 oaks- Goatneck area. Brazos Point and 5 oaks were separated by the Brazos River which was- and is- crossed on a cable suspension bridge- a country version of the one at in Waco. The Roeblings built the Waco bridge then the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Another like the Brazos Point bridge was at Brazos and Tintop, where the national Motorcycle riverbottom run from Mineral Wells ended. A similar bridge is on Bob Phillip's 8 Country Reporter- I think it is between Knox City and Benjamin. - Cobb Ranch country. J.P. Morgan, of Morgan & Louisana Railroad & Steamship lines established Morgan, Texas. His son or brother controlled the land and Squire Morgan, my neighbor in Walnut Springs owned a home, did gardening, wrote poetry, and did farm labor. The ranch in 1960's was called the Morgan- Campbell Ranch This is in Bosque County. There should be Campbell family records for 2 to 4 generations in the Meridian courthouse. Oh, yes, there was a front page article in Waco Tribune Herald about the School Supt. Bateman of Meridian contacting the Bosque County sheriff to drive a school bus- he could not find licensed drivers. The sheriff took the job , partly to make a positive impression on the students. The county outside Clifton is as sparsely settled as some High plains Counties. If these Campbells were on an Iredell (Bosque County) mail route or Hico (Hamilton County) mail Route, they may have lived in Black Stump Valley area of Erarh County, Duffau or Three Way Area of Erath County, or Hamilton County. It is also possible these Campbells lived across the Brazos in Johnson ( Cleburne) or Somerville Co. (Glen Rose) or Hill County ( Blum- Whitney) areas before the Morgan- Campbell marriage. During the prohibition days, if one left $5.00 in a hollow oak tree in designated areas on the crooked & dangerous (Quicksand) Brazos River, guess what was in a mason jar in the tree when you returned ? The big boys told me- Alcohol and other paint removers were never part of my beverage survival requirements. Happy Hunting- Hope this helps. 3. Doctor's Certificates were issued by the State, or, In Mexico, Benito Juarez signed one for Great Great Grandad Dr. W. P. Hatchett's brother. They were given to men who "Read Medicine" and served an aprenticeship under an older Doctor, studying textbooks at night. Dr. Hatchett was licensed in Texas and was said to have attended the University of Cincinatti Medical school. I have his book of formulas and perscriotions for common ailments- (I think it is his- or copied from his by Great Grandmother. ) and he was also a pharmacist, a minister, and a land speculator. I understand the U. of Cinn. cannot produce a degree completed by him , but there have been all kinds of ways it could be missing now. My first Stephenville Doctor, Dr. Naylor, also did dentistry. Don't think he did major surgery, but he and Dr. hatchett made rural house calls. 3. Hi being an Erath County native and attending many churches, singing Conventions, weddings, funerals and other sad occasions, as well as County Baptist Association meetings as a delegate, I would say off hand he was Congregational Methodist, possible Regular Methodist, or Primitive Baptist. Some Primitive Baptists to this day do not believe in professionally educated Ministers- they may be educated as an Engineer or teacher or whatever, but the Pastoral sermons & so forth are learned from Bible study, concordances, & so forth. One Primitive Baptist church at Evergreen- U.S. 67 was very close to Quaker or Amish- an ordained Elder with leadership experience or ability was sometimes present. If he did not feel led to preach, they sang a song or two and sat and read until someone- any man- would felt led, and he would stand and discuss scripture and its applications for 5 minutes to an hour or more, I was told. They met on both Saturday and Sunday once a month. All business of the congregation was done on Saturday. I think some Churches of Christ also have Elders as does the Christian Church which supports TCU all through its moves from Waco to Thorp Springs to Fort Worth. Confused yet? Hope i gave you hunting ground. Erath County church Clerks- not paid secretaries have kept detailed records for 140 years. . County associations or District Bishops could point you to the right one who may still have records, such as Mrs. Caudie Beech Duke kept at Pony Creek. 1. Re: [ERATH] Rev Head
    2. charles a Wyly
    3. Hi, I am not sure, but Ida Head Gristy was a member of the Selden Baptist Church, organized either by Great Great Grand Rev. and Dr. Hatcherr or one of his sons, Hamp or "Pink " or Pinckney. Dr Hatchett was a missionary Babtist, son in law of Rev. B.Tt. Stevens of Shipley, now Pine Mountain, Ga. Both are buried at Selden. They and "Choctaw" Bill Robinson organized "Churches of Christ to be called the Pony Creek (or whichever) Baptist Churches. In the Pony Creek organization they had 1. 2 sermons back to back (no Sunday School), 2. Gave Right hand of Christian Fellowship to new converts (In a community where two of Quantrill.s Raiders who rode with jesse james lived), adjourned to a pool in the Pony Creek for baptizing, went back to the church and gave the right hand of Church membership to those baptized, , went into business conference, and elected delegates to the Paluxy Baptist Association. a month later those delegates met in Grandbury. Rumors spread that Indians had returned (Usually equal opportunity Raiding Comanches who also raided Caddo and Lipan and Cherokee homes- nothing personal towards white skin) on Pony Creek & Paluxy before all Civil war soldiers came home. All delegates to the association returned home, passing burned homes or raided stock pens. Not one of their farms was disturbed by the Raiders. Erath County was the Cross Timbers religiously as well as geography. In the 1940's there were 7 th Day Baptists, Anti Music Baptists ( Usually Primitive or "Hardshell" ), Missionary Baptists, which many Black Baptists have never left (Keiths and Rippetoes of Highland and Pontotoc - Dublin to De Leon, were Missionary Baptists with local associations. Others were Primitive who supported the Primitive Baptist Duffau Association campgrounds in Glen Rose. The Fundamental Baptists were strong in 1940's days of Frank Norris of Fort Worth and Hubbard, Tex & Detroit Michigan, where some guy named Jerry Falwell was a teenage Sunday School member. Southern Baptist literature was from Nashville, Tenn. Missionary baptist literature, if they used anything but the Bible was from Conway, Arkansas. Those in the reform movement of the Campbell Brothers and one Stone, dropped the Baptist name in cases like Atlanta First Baptist and dropped the Bapgtist name and doctorines, taking over the building. 40% of the members found a new building and at a recent Centenial celebration led by Dr. Charles Stanley, the Church of Christ in the old building returned the old Pulpit to the Baptist group for special services. Dr. Hatchett's cousin, Crid Hatchett was a Church of Christ Elder at Chalk Mountain and Clara Atkins, my elementary teacher, and the Stiglers of Stephenville grocery were his descendants. Several Hatchetts were killed in Taylor's army in Mexico, 1845-7. Missionary Baptist churches around Clarkesville, Ga. were integrated before 1840's Toby Cleveland, given freedom money and property when Rev. War Col. Ben Cleveland died, organized Missionary Baptist Churches in Georgia and South Carolina which spread into Texas. No rural Baptist or Methodist or Church of Christ would work on Sunday . Some would repair broken threshers or bailers several worked around so it would be ready Monday. That vanished from Erath County with the coming of Dairies- Cows need milking 7 days a week and State inspectors may call on Sunday. I remember Rev. Holt of Bluf Dale changed from Methodist to Baptist 4 or 5 times, depending on who needed a pastor within driving distance. The Episcopal ans Disciples of Christ were in early Stephenville. Dublin had a Catholic parish until Tarleton, of A&M system, drew Catholic services into Stephenville. Thurber had Catholic and most Protestant churches. Some Northern Baptists had one mission in Stephenville, which switched to Southern or dual afilliation. I remember 8 or 10 types Baptist- two types Methodist (Congregational and Episcopal), 2 types Churches of Christ- some were doctorinal one cuppers and anti all holidays but July 4 th, several types Pentecostal, and accordion and Gituar music in the Courthouse shade before preaching. Jehova's Witness from Hico were very active in south and East Erath County. Most held 2 week summer Revivals and meetingsunder Brush arbors, tabernacle sheds, or Oak Trees with 1 or 2 lanterns to stay cool. Most harvest was completed by then. Sorry if i chased rabbits- hope this helps.Take this and $5.oo to the dairy Queen and you can get a Malt, and hopefully some change. 3. Hi, I notice the name Daffin in your reply. Wonder if the Ghost town of Duffau could have been a bad reading of Daffin printed? The old Duffau had 2 story brick buildings , a railroad station- and taxi service to Stephenville, which had no early railroad. Duffau was on the Duffau Creek and was thought to have been named for an Indian named Duffau, do you suppose his name in Arkansas or other Cherokee background was really Daffin- just wondering. For Example- the Paytons of Payton- Frakes Dairy in Stephenville were descended from the Hewitt and Crawford area Patton families. The Patton community has a sign pointing towards Crawford from Hwy 6. a Patton told me this at a garage sale at an old house on I-35 in Hewitt. He had books from the Patton store before 1900 which had family charges of opium, paregoric, and other drugs which were over the counter, but now illegal or Rx only. I bought the book for $1.00 as I remember. Print Patton and if you wave the crossing of one T and you have Payton. Gen. Patton of WW2 had Texas connections besides Fort Hood & Camp Bowie. He even trained his mechanics to buy, with a million or so of Patton money , from wrecking yards, anything stripped from Wrecking yards that fit Army trucks, as he knew thatOrdinance depots were understocked and paperwork was too slow to chase Rommel across North Africa. Rodgers is the German spelling of Rogers and Spanish Rodriquez and other Spanish spellings. Col. Honzie Rodgers retired at Walnut Springs after Korea on a ranch across the road from Col. Buck Barry, Texas Ranger, and family, near East Bosque or Flag Branch. Lorene Wyly also married a Rogers or Rodgers in Detroit, Mich. before moving home to Stephenville, The cooks I knew most about were the brothers in Glen Rose- barbers, I think- at least they met a lumber truck operator who needed repairs and swapped them the lumber for truck repairs. This led to Cook Brothers Building Materials on loop in Stephenville. "Bud" cook had a home in Stephenville near our rent house and bought Dr. Hatchett's retirement home Dr. Hatchett fought as a short term Ranger in Mexican War- with abrother & several Ga. & Tennessee cousins, and organized churches, Gonzales to Waco to Stephenville. He was my great Great Grandad. Bud Cook's daughter married my cousin, David Carey, who owns land from the Selden Cook place to the Duffau Creek Johnsville. Hope this helps. 3. Hi, Hewitt is a city of 8,000 plus and houses are being built 10 & 20 at a time. It was on Old Temple Road out of Waco, but now is surrounded by I-35- Robinson citylimits, Waco on 2 sides, near Woodway and is home of Midway High School, Midway District. Lorena School District has many houses in Hewitt. Two trains a day - 120 cars of Wylming coal fly through to Austin and San Antonio. We join the Waco industrial Park- Coca Cola Minute made international bottlers, Tenneco, Time DC, Huck, M7M Mars factory, and regional testing labs, and many more. Caterillar has a factory in London for large- diesel dump trucks- 5 foot wheels. The second is under construction. They will ship to Mexico and Canada and pay $18.00 per hour after completing their training program at Texas State Technical College (Old Conally Air Base) Conallly and Hewitt area each has a Raytheon Aircraft harness factory or modification plant. We are 3 miles from Waco's Richland Mall. The older Lake Air Mall is the oldest completely enclosed Mall in the State. There are several other factories within 5 miles, including a National PX supply and Pittsburg Paints. Woodway is the Highland park of Waco area- high living standards and codes and completely surrounded by Waco, which now goes past the McGregor airport. , 3 or 4 miles from McGregor. Hewitt has strict building codes and excellent streets. New houses $80,000 to $ 250, 000.00 One next door neighbor is American born jaanese- a retired missionary. Next house on the corner is a Black family. He works for the State. Across the street is a man born in West Germany. down a little is a German, a Syrian P resbyterian, some German Texas born Lutherans, and a Spanish Jehova Witness. Some of the Patel families from India live in Hewitt. Many retire from Fort Hood and start over in this area. Bet a Geneaologist in Killeen - Fort Hood would have fun. Hope this is not more than you asked. With a strip of Waco homes and Woodway, the school District has far more population than Stephenville at present. and Thurber was once 10 to 30 times larger than Stephenville. Many I attrend church with have Erath County or Tarleton roots.McLemores and Warrens and friends owned much of the cotton land Hewitt now occupies. Take care Charles Wyly The old town of 4 or 5 houses still exist. It was named for a Railroad executive - a Hewitt, who located the station here in Steam and Interurban days. The station was recently moved back to the tracks and will be restored as a museum. People who ran the depot and teletype are still living. Earliest settlers were one Wyly, a astor Wylie from Baylor, and the Warren and McLemore families. Hewitt Drive in 12 years has changed from 2 lanes through hay fields to 5 lanes and 6 at shift change. We have had McDonald's, Taco Bell, Burger King, 2 chicken places, Trevenio's and Whataburger built in the last 5 years, all near the High school, which has Marine Corps ROTC for boys and girls. 3. The URL, snail address, and phone number for the Orphan Train Society is now available on our "Self Portraits" website. Thanks to Cousin Russell Self for providing this information. Go to the main page and click on "Link YourSelf." It is the first entry under the Genealogy Pages section and will remain there permanently. The Society has helped a lot of people as well as making many of us aware of a part of history that might otherwise be forgotten. I'm sure they will welcome all visitors and inquiries. 1. [ERATH] My connection to Erath County
    2. Frank
    3. I am new to genealogy and I've been on this list for about a month. I thought I would put up some family history to see if my family tree ties in with anyone else on this list. My grandmother Vada COOK was born in Dublin, Erath in 1915. She had a brother Herschel COOK and sister Lera May COOK. My great grandparents were Rhonel Earl COOK and Myrtle SCHOOLER, they were married in 1913 in Erath. Rhonel (Ronald) was shot in a watermelon patch at a young age in 1917. After his death, Myrtle married Robert RODGERS in 1920 in Erath. Myrtle died young about 1925. The untimely death of my great grandparents led to my grandmother and her siblings being reared apart. Over the years my granmother has lost any contact with relatives in the area. Through the limited research I have done I have connections to the following surnames in Erath county: CABE, COOK, DAFFIN (DAUPHIN), RODGERS, SCHOOLER. If you notice any connections please feel free to contact me.
