Will someone look at their Family Archive CD317 to see what is listed for a JW HICKEY marriage in Georgia abt 1870. I think he married a Minerva Catherine WARD. Thank you, Karen
.James William "Charlie" HICKEY ....d. abt 1875, my mystery man ! I am unable to confirm the story, or where he lived, died, buried, marriage to Minerva WARD, or who his parents were. It is said that: (in the Loco, IT (maybe Stephens Co.) .. Charlie was an Indian Scout for Texas Rangers. ... Was killed approximately 1879-80 during the range wars of Texas ...Charlie and Oscar took the buckboard out to work on a fence. Charlie was killed while repairing, rebuilding or building a fence by some men who rode up on horses and shot him. Oscar was with him (approximately 5-6 years old) when it happened and saw it all. Oscar ran back to the house and told his pregnant mother. They went to the neighbors house and then all went to see what happened. Oscar's father was dead. ... Said to be Chickasaw, or Pottawatomie ------------ full or 1/2 ..."Don't fence me in" song was based on the range wars of that time. Any suggestions anyone? Karen
Can anyone help me by locating marriage info on HICKEY and Minerva WARD. Possibly in Loco, Stephens Co., IT on 01/11/1870. I "think" his name was James William "Charlie" HICKEY. Also he was killed in that same area abt. 1875. I would like to know how I might get death info on him. Then had a son Oscar Daniel HICKEY. b. abt 1871 Thanks, Karen

Hi, can't remember his first name, but there was a Hickey who was a barber in Stephenville, Texas . To me he was Mr. Hickey 60 years ago. He sometimes cut my hair. the first name of Jim stickes in my mind. The Texas Agency for licensing barbers and /or cosmetologists in Austin probably has a list of all licensed operators. This Hickey definitely had the keen eyes and high cheek bones so characheristic of many Eastern Indians. WARD- now there's a book. Guess you knew the beloved Woman of the Women's Council who trained and approved the next Cherokee Chief at old Chota or Echota was first married to Mankiller. She fought beside him after he died. Her second husband was a Ward of the Quala Cherokee area of Georgia and North Carolina, south of Gatlainburg. He was Scotch - Irish and they lived among the first white settlers in North Georgia where my Wyly- Hatchett- Cleveland- Clark families lived from Toccoa to Hiawasse & into the Carolinas. Her neighbors and husband taught her dairy and poultry husbandry and better farming methods, which she carried back to the Blue Peace City of Refuge, Echota in early 1800's . I attended school with a Nancy Ward in Selden, Erath County, Texas who had the hair , eyes and light olive skin of many Indians- no connection known, That was 1944-46. I do know , however that the Buffingtons of Bruceville- Eddy , Texas were close kin to Mary Jane Buffington who in late 1800.s married a son of William Clark Wyly of Tyler, Tex. and Ga. in Arkansas and he was on the Tahlequah Cherokee Council and ran the orphanage in 1900. Many Arkansas and Texas Cherokee had Georgia & Carolina roots. Nancy Ward , in Echota, heard her old Georgia friends were having a severe drought so she sent them 300 dogs to eat to prevent starvation. She also sent cattle, which her son in law Gen. Joseph Martin of the Clarkesville- Toccoa area returned to her and said thanks but no thanks. He was an Indian agenttrying to help the Indians and she was helping the Anglos. In Waco and Stephenville , a Joe L. Ward was an auto parts dealer with a Waco warehouse. He retired in the last 10 -15 years- or at least the business names changed. I have taught with Love family members in Waco, Black and white. One recently retired as an Assistant Principal I substituted for another when her baby was born. Taylors were all over Erath and Bosque and McClennan and Ellis Counties that I knew of and taught. Many of the Waco area Black and White and some "Spanish " in Waco claim Cherokee and/or Choctaw heritage. Historically there was a Capt. Kitt Taylor, pre Civil War, who married Amy Artis Wyly in Tennessee and Andrew jackson, a struggling young lawyer, had his first law office in a chair by the fireplace of their home, where he rented a room. "Old Chola" had not yet developed his later selective memory of promises made to native American Americans. Seems the Blue Peace Cities of Refuge for one and all regardless of race or social status, and the Georgia Gold Fields made him forget a lot of treaties and personal promises to personal friends.. If this rings any bells I will look for more info on Mr. Hickey & others. Take Care Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Is anyone researching THOMAS family in Erath/Commanche Co ca 1900? Thanks, Cindy
HI- MACKLINE, EVANS, THOMPSON, KEAHEY, NELSON- THIS IS NOT THE BEECH- RUMPH PRIVATE GRAVEYARD WITH SEVERAL GRAVES AND A ROCK FENCE 100 YARDS OR MORE NORTH TOWARDS THE JOHN BEN RUMPH CHILDHOOD HOME. Entrance is at the first cattleguard on left north of U.s. 67. standing in the front of the pony Creek church, the cemetery is to your left about 40 degrees in large cedars at the top of the hill. The new cemetery is BEHIND the church. I found the old abandoned Box Methodist- Pony Creek Baptist cemetery yesterday after Cousin Maypearl Pendleton or Pemberton Carey's funeral , age 92, at Stephenville. Her husband was Perry Carey, son of George Carey of Arkansas and Selden, Texas. The above are the only readable names. Someone with better eyes good at crayon rubs might read one more. It has an overlapping heart around the names with a round top on the hearts, like a plumbob. There are 8 or 10 more nearby with foothigh native limestone walls and caps, and possibly 4 that are not marked or rocked. Headstones of 1880's appear to be white sandrock- unpolished but professionally cut and inscribed. Several graves have iron fences with no gates. The cemetery is not otherwise fenced. Cattle like the shade, so watch your step. They do clear out the tall grass and weeds. There appears tp be an unmarked grave , caved in, at the headstone & outside the fence of the Keahey grave. Could easily be a Rattlesnake den now. Carl Duke and I killed a large short one in a nearby grave 50 years ago. He was 4 feet into the grave. This cemetery is less than a mile north of U.S. 67 on Pony Creek- Duffau county road on the next hill west of Three Way school and Three Way Store, formerly run by Texas Rep. H.G. Perry, a Hurley grandson. When I attended church there I was told they abandoned the old cemetery because they feared it might be contaminating the hand dug well water. It is on the wrong side of the hill for that. Just to the west it drains into the Prairie or Hurley branch of the Duffau Creek which runs south . A few feet over the hill the water drains into the Pony Creek which flows north. Lone Mountain and the Paluxy valley are in the background. It is an unusual view. First grave :Infant son of L.E. AND A.E. MACKLINE, Oct. 10, 1860. Second Grave: REBECCA M. wife of S.T. EVANS 5/18/1824 d. 12/31/1897 Third Grave : S.T.EVANS 4/23/ 1818-8/30/1880 (3 ARE IN IRON FENCE- NO HEADSTONE ON THIRD) 4 th Grave JENNIE MAY, DAUGHTER OF T.J. AND M.J.THOMPSON 10/25/1845 (POSSIBLY A 75 BUT LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE A WORN 4) TO 5/28/1881 Next: WINIFRED, WIFE OF JOHN R. KEAHEY, B. 1841 REST IS UNREADABLE- NEEDS A RUBBING AND A 4' PIECE OF HEAVY PLYWOOD TO COVER THE POSSIBLE SNAKE OR SKUNK OR FOX DEN IN FRONT OF IT. rEADS THROUGH AN IRON FENCE & HELD DOWN BY A LARGE CEDAR. Next : H.P. NELSON, SON OF N.L. AND H.E. NELSON, B. 3/22/1827 d. 5/1/1861 At first glance ridges indicate there might be 10 to 20 more unmarked unfenced & unrocked graves, but i think a metal prod would show they are scars left by a bulldozer clearing cedars. John Rumph gave instructions that the cedars around the graves would not be touched. Carry some pruning shears, to get to the headstones without scratches, a hoe for snakes and whatever, a 4' piece of plywood to cover the hole in front of the Keahey headstone, and a stepladder to scale the iron fences . One of the Evans headstones was knocked into the fence and broken in two pieces. They are all 2 to 3 inches thick. One is 4 feet high, . I turned both halves of the Evans stone up to make it readable. I lost my Keahey request. If you still have it please forward this to him- maybe they will see it. Hi! I have been reading your posts on this list with great interest. One line of my family lived in Erath Co., in the Dublin / Stephenville area. Their surname is TACKETT, also my ONEY line lived for a time in the Stephenville area (though I am unsure the exact area he was living before his marriage). The family I am researching and looking for connection on is: William M. TACKETT, b. Jan. 10, 1823 in Floyd Co., KY. Married Mary Ann PATRICK, b. Jan. 6, 1829 in Floyd Co., KY. They were married before 1845 in Madison Co., Ark. and their 10 children were born in Madison Co. Ark. - 1. George W. TACKETT, b. Dec. 29, 1845 m. Mary Ellen WILLIAMS 2. James TACKETT, b. Sept. 23, 1848 3. Nancy TACKETT, b. Jan. 24, 1850 4. Robert TACKETT, b. May 31, 1853 m. Emily HARRIS 5. William M. TACKETT, JR. "Uncle Billie", b. Jan. 1, 1856 m. Virginia Tennessee "Maggie" WILLIAMS 6. Sarah Jane TACKETT, b. Mar. 5, 1858 m. 1.) Jackson Alexander BROWN 2.) William Thomas WELLS 7. Andrew Jackson TACKETT, b. Jan 8, 1860 m. Lavine Ann WHITE 8. Rhoda Ann "Rodia" TACKETT, b. Nov. 8, 1862 m. William K. "Bill" DENNIS 9. Mary Catherine TACKETT, b. Mar. 23, 1865 m. Beauregard Glenn SALYER 10. Eliza Jane "Liza" TACKETT, b. Jan. 10, 1869 m. Richard P. "Dick" ONEY Just after the birth of Eliza Jane the family left Madison Co., Ark and was in Williamson Co., Texas for the 1870 census & also for the 1880 census. From the family history of George W. Tackett in the "Williamson County, Texas Its History and Its People" book states that the family left Williamson Co., for Erath County in the early 1880's. I am looking for any connections on this family. I'd love to exchange information. I am especially looking for the marriage location of Eliza Jane Tackett & Richard P. Oney. I have checked with the Erath Co. Courthouse and they don't have the marriage recorded there. Is there anyone out there that may have the answer to this one of my searches? I look forward to hearing from anyone on this family or any connecting families. Teresa weagre@itlnet.net
You might call the FHC in Mesa. They have lots of books. The cemetry lists are also on film at the FHC. Look on the catalog and order them. For your information--these links are a new and permanent part of our main page, "Self Portraits," and are offered for your enjoyment and as an aid to research. Go to our main site at http://www.selfroots.com Scroll down to "Link YourSelf" and click on the link Check out the first two entries under "Genealogy Pages." "Deciphering Old Handwriting" has links to examples that show variations in penmanship that you might find in old documents. It is a really nice site. "GenealogyQuest," a site maintained by our friend, Erin Wallace, has a search engine that will handle a multitude of surnames--and if you have a genealogy Website of your own, you can submit it to her for inclusion there. Hi, saw your post in Rootsweb review. Great Great Grandad Dr. William Pinckney Hatchett, Dr. , minister, & land investor, is buried by his mom Elizabeth Tuggle. Some of the family were in Jamestown colony. The Tarrant, Tuggle, and Herndon families had many close marriage and business ties and made Navy uniforms for 400 years and sold them world wide. . The Tuggles, or Tugglestines, had Belgian Roots. Tarrant County is named for one from these families. One gave the land and built the present Christ Church in Bradford, England and gave it to the people of the Parrish. I have some history copied on 8 1/2 by 14" paper , 1/2 inch thick, if you have specific questions about them. The info came from Clayton Geneaological library in Houston, but I'm sure others have it also. I am desperate need of a lookup in the 1900 census for Erath County, Texas. I am looking for a Robert L. GEORGE. He was born in April of 1871, so in the 1900 census he would be 29 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lola
To All Whom It May Concern: The purpose of this message is to inform all genealogists & researchers who subscribe to TEXAS Rootsweb Lists, of a very important web site that now has a searchable database of over 1,650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks, between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers had fought in the Indian Wars in Florida and also the War with Mexican, and then the Civil War. It is without doubt that some of the descendants of these men are most likely in every county of the great state of Texas. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT: The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead, of Virginia, and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, as being under his command and/or responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by 'quantity.' (ie. 426 males 20-30 yrs, or 34 females 20-30 yrs) HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has turned most of the 'quantities' into actual names. The list of these officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see the Barracks Notebook section) are available, free of any charge. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ http://www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data of Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," for those who served at this federal military post on the Niagara Frontier. Also available is a wealth of rare and interesting information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com
Dublin is indeed still an active city. I was there last week to find my great-great- grandparents gravesite. They lived there from about the 1870's. They may have known your relatives. William died in 1888 and Alice died in 1924. Dublin is a city of about 3,500 people about 80 miles southwest of Ft. Worth, Texas. From all I can find, Dublin was a thriving area at the turn of the century. I do not have much in the way of details of life there in the 1890's though. My great grandparents in Dublin were William F. Hannon who married Alice Karnes. They are buried in the Old Dublin Memorial Park. They had a daughter Leila Hannon who married William Alexander Flippo.
