Hi, Tommy, I am back, scratching my head. have scanned the descendants of Henry Copeland, James Copeland, Polly Copeland, Mills Copeland, and Peggy Copeland, children of John Copeland of South Carolina, Old Laurens District, 1700's.& 1800's. . I found several Elizabeth Copelands, a Fannie Copeland, and a F. Copeland, but their dates don't correspond to yours. This family in S.C. also 2 lines of Winns intermarried to Copelands. Mom told me Zee Winn of Huckaby and Stephenville J.C. Penny's was her cousin, but she had so many she got confused how, but it was in S.C. and Arkansas and Erath County, as were some of the Vaughns and Jim Nabors families. George Washington Sevier great grandson of Col. John Sevier, had one daughter, Dora, who married Campbell Copeland before 1880 and they had 13 children in Overton County, Tennessee. They had Sevier cousins in Milford and Itasca, Texas and Corpus Christi , San Antonio and Waco, besides the Wyly, Kay, Rampley Tarpley and other Sevier descendants in Texas. This includes the family and descendants of Missouri Governor Augustus King who settled in Stephenville. This is from the Sevier Family History of 1982. A Copeland researcher in Valley Mills, Texas has recently done a 2 inch plus bound book of the Copelands of Pennsylvania , Tennessee, Texas and the Carolinas but claims she could not find the 28 page geneaology chart mom had , sent for the 1937 Reunion. I asked her if she was sure she had found all wives of all men in her book. She was so positive she made me wonder if she might be alergic to a drop of Cherokee blood among a family of Bluebloods. Many of the Copelands around Waco can trace to the Carolinas. Due to Baylor students and some Cherokee businessmen and wholesalers and traders, Belmead First Baptist Church lets the Buffalo River Indian Baptist Church meet in their old chapel. My cousin Minneola Wyly Fulbright attends the parent church. Her mom was a Vinson from Alabama and Hico and Selden.. The Methodist are going to Tulsa next week from Waco to plan starting an Indian oriented Indian church. One lady wholesaler, formerly with some discount stores, is on the Tahlequah Tribal Council. On hwy 77 in Robinson is a Quala- T t shirt warehouse and factory. The Quala Cherokee were the main group in the Eastern Cherokee town and reservation in North Carolina, between Gatlainburg, Tenn. and Hiawasse Ga. They bought their own land through a Scottish front man while hiding in the hills from the Trail of Tears forced move. My pages also show a Fannie and Mary Copeland, twins born in the late 1800's. One married Toy Murphy in 1924. Sevier Family History lists a Thomas Dudley Jackson who married a Sevier descendant in Texas, Kate Corine Elston. 6/17/1896- one daughter Joyce Elston Jackson. Some of these kids were born in Alabama and some in Texas. Two of the sisters married Snow men. (One Wyly in Ga. married a Snow and one married a Starr) Some of this Jackson family is buried in Cleburne, Texas. Have more on Pres. Andrew Jackson and his Sevier conflicts and Wyly- Taylor home - their living room was his first law office- Amy Artis Wyly and Capt. Kitt Taylor, if you connect to him. I heard this at a Sevier Reunion in Gatlainbirg, Tenn. Valentine (Vol-In-Tin or Vol) Sevier had 7 children, 1699-1803. One son John had 18. His dau. had 2. One of them had 13 children and one of these 13, son O.C.Wyly had 23 & raised 3 others. 22 of the 23 had 4 to 8 children. Grandad had 3, and dad had 1 and I had2 and 4 grandchildren and 10 double first cousins in Selden - now that's just one line. The joke at the Sevier reunion was who was REALLY the father of his country, George Washington , his old neighbor in Virginia, or Valentine Sevier? Take care, Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Hi, will answer more completely later. but looks like you and I may have close Copeland Roots as does Rev. Kenneth Copeland. My Great Grandparents were Charles Madison Hipp (S.C. German) and Sara Copeland, married in South Carolina.& moved to Arkansas. Both have parents buried in Huricane Baptist Church cemetery, Clinton, S.C. I have a Copeland Family History for a reunion held in Greenville, Greer, and Clinton (Old Laurens District) on alternate years, 1937. Grandmother Carey was the daughter of Charles Hipp and Sarah Copeland. . I and Col. Ken "Tex " Carey , and Hatchett cousins were in that history of 1937- back to John Copeland - 1760's, a Presbyterian Elder of Duncan Creek, where he is buried. , between Clinton and Newbury or Newberry . I visited the Huricane cemetery and church 4 years ago.Seems several Copelands still attend there and recognized my lineage. Other cousins buried there were White, Vaughn- Vaughan- , Dillard, and Nabors- Neighbors- Brothers differred on these spellings and tombstones indicate it, The Copelands of Ark. and Okla. all had Cherokee blood or were kin by marriage to someone who did. If they were in Arkansas or Missouri down to Tahlequah, Ok. before 1900 that was Cherokee Nation, settled by Intermarrieds and close kin before the Trail of Tears in some cases, such as the Blackburns on War Eagle River south of Eureka Springs. . My mom and Aunt Ada Carey Hatchett were born in Hope, Arkansas. When Grandad Carey joined his Stone cousins in Huckaby and Pea Ridge, Texas, One Copeland cousin of Grandmother's settled between Lingleville and Pea Ridge, Texas. Grandad had an uncle who laid on the Civil War Battlefield of Pea Ridge , Arkansas 3 days , wounded, among the dead. The burial crew saw him move. He recoverred and kept books for his daughter's grocery in Arkansas. One Hipp now lives in Cranfils Gap. 7 more Hipp brothers live south of San Antonio and 6 are school teachers. Must run in the blood- some overcome it. One Robert Maddigan of Temple (then) posted a 48 page listing of Hipp Family History from the Hepp- Hipp brothers who came to South Carolina from 70 miles south of Manheim on the Rhine River. The name supposedly means a pruning knife, or the one who does the pruning. In Minnesota it is Hippleth. I printed Robert's pages out, it was accurate in roots but narrow on recent generations. Some were called Dutch Fork Hipps in the Carolinas and several are in Copeland histories. Have you checked the Cherokee rolls for your Jacksons? There were some on it with 1/64 or less blood who claimed land west of the Mississippi River. That would mean they proved someone 6 generations before them had some Indian blood or were accepted into Echota(Old Chota) and Etowa as Ceremonial Blood Brothers. These were Blue Peace cities of Refuge FOR ALL WHO SEEKED AND EARNED IT. Andrew Jackson wanted this stopped, and THIS was one reason for the Cherokee Removal on the Trail of Tears. Sam Houston's childhood friend John Jolly in Tennessee was in Arkansas when Sam came to Texas and he encouraged them to come to the Republic. He declared all east and north of Tyler as a reservation. The President said no reservation, but they were welcome as farmers and citizens of Texas. Guess where Cherokee County, Texas got it's name? Will read some more tomorrow . See you later. Mr. Wyly, My grgrandmother was Nancy Ann Cothran Jackson, wife of William Addison Jackson, both of whom were born in Cherokee county Alabama and both died in Erath county but were buried in Hamilton County. They moved to Erath county between 1895 and 1900 and lived there twenty years or more. Their daughter Lula Ann Jackson d. 1927 Erath county and their son Joseph Forney Jackson d. 1963 Erath county. Are they in any of your Erath county history? Would love to know more about them as none of our relatives can tell me anything other than they were nice people. Nancy Ann Cothran Jackson, b. 1846 in Alabama was daughter of John A. Cothran and Frances E. Copeland b. 1824 SC. I always wondered why Nancy and William moved to Erath as none of our known kin lived there. Could she be related to your Copeland kin who moved to Erath County? Do you perhaps know who the parents of Frances Copeland were? I also have notes that say the Copelands were possible kin to Grover Cleveland. Another note says these Jacksons are buried in Altman Cemetery in Carlton, Hamilton County. Is that close by Stephenville? Another note mentions Chalk Mountain as where they lived or was buried. Would appreciate your indulgence on these questions. Really enjoy your missives on Erath County. Thanks, Joyce Dunn
Correction: i mistakenly got the Stephenson name wrong. Her name is Margaret Budd Stephenson of Covington, Ga. and is a descendant of james Wyly and Jemima Cleveland through their daughter Elizabeth Wyly, sister of Gen. J.R. of Clarkesville- Hiawasse- Toccoa and Tenn. Margaret and Velma Kay Hugghins supplied most of the Wyly pages in Sevier Family History book. John Cleveland, son of Col. Ben lived with james Rutherford and Sarah Clark Wyly in Toccoa, Ga. Traveller's Rest Inn, sold to them by Gen. Joseph Martin, brother in law of Col. Ben through Graves sisters. The property was owned in Cherokee Nation lease by Jesse Walton who left it for the Ga. Gold fields, which was part of the reason for the trail of Tears. Gen. Wyly sold it to a Jarrett- Lucas family (Tennessee Wylys were closely intermarried to some Lucas families. ) when he and Sarah separated. They sold it to State of Georgia. Clemson U. and others hold weekend classes in Blacksmithing and pioneer crafts there. Tell the guide you are a Wyly and they will show you the pegged rafters in the 3rd story family sleeping loft. and maybe some family records. James Rutherford Wyly and Frances Wallace raised her daughter Emily Bradshaw and Absolam Cleveland and Mary Yowell's son John Cleveland , named for his Uncle John. Col. Ben's brother(not son) John was a Baptist minister. So was his former Slave Toby Cleveland, his gunsmith and blacksmith. tOBY USED HIS INHERITANCE TO BUY gA. AND s.c. LAND AND ESTABLISH CHURCHES. tHE CHURCh SARAH WYLY ATTENDED- A mISSIONARY Baptist Church integrated before 1840 according to their records Gen Wyly's building crew refused to build the Clarkesville Episcopal Church for Charleston summer tourists until they agreed to include a free access balcony for fre Blacks, slaves, Indians, and unknowns to worship without shareing a family owned pew. This church still stands near the Oldest Clarkesville, Ga. Cemetery, 1 block from downtown. Take care, Charles Wyly The State of Ga. calls Traveller's Rest Inn 3 family ownership from settlement to date. Looks like 2 family to me, and posssibly, loosely, one family ownership. Gen. Wyly and Sarah Clark Wyly are buried side by side - one unmarked grave between them in Clarkesville, Ga. and Gen. Ben, raised by Col. Ben Cleveland as his son but really his grandson, is buried 1 row forward and 3 over from Gen. Wyly, his lifelong friend as well as cousin. The book published by Ga. Department of Natural Resources TRAVELLER'S REST AND THE TUGALOO CROSSROADS HAS MUCH WYLY-CLEVELAND-WARD-WALTON-LUCAS- "HACKETT" (HATCHETT?) jARRETT, MARTIN AND OTHER RELATED HISTORIES WHICH MATCHES SOME INFO IN THE BOOK- THE TRAIL OF TEARS. These books are available either from the State of Georgia or Inter Library loan. Hi, How far back have you traced this Edwards branch ?? It seems Jemima Cleveland, daughter of the Rev. War Co. Benjamin Cleveland of King's mountain and 99 other battles with no losses. She and James Wyly had two children, Gen. James Rutherford Wyly, Ga. Militia, born Blont Co. Tenn. and Elizabeth Wyly. James married Barbara Fuqua and had no children in Gordon Co. Ga. and Blont Tennessee then married Mary Whittenburger, Pennsylvania Dutch and had a large family. One grandson was CAPT. ALFRED HENDERSON WYLY & his Balch in laws - the East Tesas Redlanders who joined Gen. Sam Houston at Groce's Crossing with other groups the day before a starving Santa Anna was defeated, due to the Rear Admiral Moore of Annapolis then Texas Navy then San Angelo. Admiral and his 4 ship Texas navy sailed direct to the Yucatan State of Mexico. They al rebelled against Santa Anna as a dictator and the two navies kept the Mexican navy barricaded in Vera Cruz, leaving Santa Anna to find empty rivers, not supply ships. The Runaway Scrape and Houston pulled a scortchet earth on Santa Anna similar to the Russians with Napoleon and Mexico. NOW BACK TO THE EDWARDS FAMILY- Jemima (Myers? ) Cleveland Wyly married EVANGELIST EDWARDS OR EVAN EDDARDS ON SOME RECORDS. He was killed in the Cumberland Gap, 1796, leaving 3 Edwards and two Wyly children. He was scalpped in the presence of Jemima and J.R. Wyly , age 12 or so, hid in the water under the bank. Elizabeth grabbed two EDWARDS children and jumpped off a rise into some canebrakes. the advanced hunting party came back and shot the Indian scalping Evangelist Edwards. Col Ben Cleveland , a combat veteran and leader of "Cleveland's Bulldogs or Roundheads", including James Wyly, stood and wept now that he had a chance to help his daughter and she needed him. He gave her land in East Feliciana Parrish, Clinton, La and money. She raised the Edwards children there, but Gen. Wyly seems to have drifted back to Blont County , Tennessee to Landin or Louden (the same town) and lived there until he married Gov. John Sevier's Granddaughter Sarah Hawkins Clark in Gov. Sevier's home in Knoxville, Tenn. then they had children in Tennessee and Georgia, where he built the Tugaloo Turnpike and Inns in Hiawasse, and Toccoa, Ga. where he built Traveller's Rest Inn, now a Ga. State Park and Clevelands lived with or near him. Jemima married a distant Cleveland cousin in La. and when she died the cousin tried to claim her land away from her children. Ga. Militia Gen. James Rutherford Wyly, War of 1812, his firsd cousin Gen. Ben Cleveland and "Devil John", as Col. Ben affectionately called him, went to court in Clinton, La. and regained custody of Jemima's Louisiana land for Col. |Ben's estate. The records, in English but questions in several volumes and answers in corresponding volumes have a load of CLEVELAND-EDWARDS- WYLY history and experiences. Elizabeth was the grandmother of Elizabeth Budd Stephenson of Covington, Ga. also a certified Geneaologist on all these lines. Janie Furman has the above linkage as a supplement to her Sevier- Kay connections to the DAR accepted very recently, just as is stated in Pres. Cleveland's Geneaologies of 1899 for the first tine in recent history. Janie is a Sevier- Wyly- Cleveland 3 rd cousin in New Mexico. Can get you the DAR numbers if you want them. Next Question: was Gov. Edwin Edwards, of La, the one who flew into Stephenvillea few years ago and paid cash for a ranch, of Jemima's Lineage? James Grady Wyly, Neely Plantation, Talula, La. (Under the Vicksburg Bluffs) was desc. from James and Mary Whittenburger. He knew of the Edwards connections. and Louisiana connections. Some geneaologists get red eyed when it is brought up. Confused yet? Some won't go there and others are now being accepted by DAR on the same trail that was repeated to Sarah Hawkins Clark Wyly by her Grandad Sevier and she to her grandchildren while living in their homes near Clarkesville, Ga. and managing Clark land. Gen. Wyly married a Frances Wallace and raised Absolam Cleveland's son John for some years when he were small. They came to Selden , Texas repeating the same stories coverring 200 years., third repetition. Jean Wakefield Riggs told me she used to ride to the Selden(Kay or Stone) cotton Gin with her UNCLE A HURLEY and stop at the coverrred cistern of Grandad's Uncle Bill, or William Sevier Wyly and rock and talk about life there 1867 & before. sHERWIN wOOD, ONE OF oLIVE wYLY'S TWINS NOW LIVES IN THE HOUSE, RESTORED AND ROCKED. The 5 th generation is now living there. Take care Charles Wyly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. On the otherhand, if a sponsor is found, we want to be on record requesting a hearing. At that hearing, we would need to flood the room with genealogists and other concerned citizens. This bill seeks to allow adoptees to obtain their original birth certificate upon reaching the age of 21. HB13 has met with the hostility of child placement services and birth mothers. Currently it is held up in committee where it may die. Part of the HB 13 awareness may have had some effect on HB 836 because both have to do with vital statistics registration If you wish to pass this letter around, please feel free to do so. My column on Saturday April 24 will state most of what we know about the bill at this time. The column is already on my website at http://barnettesbooks.com Just click on read the columns. Scroll down and click on April 24. The column was submitted this morning for a Saturday publication date. Since being notified of this bill by Tommy Burns of Houston, I have found out only a little bit more. Supposedly, the bill was submitted to clarify the current law. The intent of the bill was to clarify the existing law and help open birth and death indexes in counties where the county clerk felt they were closed (At the same time, other county clerks felt the indexes were open). While in committee an amendment was placed on the bill stating the indexes would become open and public when the actual records (birth and death records) became open and public. According to the amendment the indexes would be closed for 25-50 years until the records themselves are public. The HB 836 passed the Public Health Committee in the State House of Representatives on March 30. It was referred to the Senate State Affairs Committee. As of today, the bill does not have a Senate sponsor. If we cause enough rancor, it is possible no one will take on the sponsorship of the bill and it will die in committee. On the otherhand, if a sponsor is found, we want to be on record requesting a hearing. At that hearing, we would need to flood the room with genealogists and other concerned citizens. While a law clarifying the present confusing law might be welcome, amendment on HB 836 closes the birth and death indexes until the actual records become public which is 25-50 years. .Monday night I contacted Jack Brissee, Chair of the FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee. Jack and his committee work with genealogists and other organizations all over the country when records are threatened with closure or misuse. He jumped on it and has faxed a letter to the Chair of the Senate State Affairs Committee. He has urged everyone to contact all genealogists, genealogical, historical and other concerned organizations to write a calm, collected, but, concerned letter to the Chair of the Senate Affairs Committee and to our own Senator concerning this bill. The Honorable Florence Shapiro Chair, Senate Committee on State Affairs P.O.Box 12068 Capital Station Austin, TX 78711 Another bill in the legislature each of you should be aware of is HB13. I have included this mailing to a number of my columnist colleagues around the country who might wish to be alert to what is happening, down here, in Texas. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who hears any news on this matter. Thank You, MIC Mic Barnette's Writes a Weekly Genealogy Column In The Houston Chronicle. Looking for any info on an Ed Dowdy born about 1885 in Erath Co. Thanks for any help. Judi
Mike Edwards, b. 1881 was a first cousin to the Joseph Edwards (1854-1873) who was hung and was the first cousin once removed to Joseph Ed Dowdy. Additionally, the spouse of Joseph Edwards was Barbara Susan Dowdy, the paternal aunt of Ed Dowdy. The Edwards-Salmon-Dowdy families were connected several different ways. All lived in and around the Clairette community. Mike Edwards parents were Micajah Richard Edwards and Martha Salmon--- Joseph Edwards parents were Samuel Edwards and Elizabeth Salmon. Thus Mike and Joseph were double-first cousins. The Clairette cemetery had its beginnings in the 1850s as the Salmon family cemetery in a similar manner that the Duffau cemetery began as the McCarty family cemetery at about the same time.
Hi, Wonder of you are referring to the people who ran Blair Hardware in Hico, Hamilton County in the corner of Hamilton co. between Stephenville , Erath County on Mineral Wells Hwy and Hamilton, Hamilton County, or between Clairette, Erath County and Iredell, Bosqye County on Hwy 6. The two roads intersect in Erath County and divide again in Hico. Either a sister or Blair Widow was running the store last year. Not sure about now. Leroy Jackson sounds so familiar. Jacksons are all over Chalk Mountain, Hico, and Stephenville area. Check your census or last tax roll. They are available in Erath County Courthouse, Texas State Library near the Capitol, or at the University of North Texas in Denton. Texas. If I recall more or see anything I will be back in touch.
