    1. [ERATH] Introduction
    2. Stevens, Gary
    3. Hello Everyone, I should have introduced myself before asking so many questions... My name is Gary Frank Stevens. My grandmother was born Bessie May Laney. She married my grandfather C.D. Cunningham and was later married to Frank M. Mingus. I never knew my grandfather but would like to know about him and his folks... My step grandfather was the only grandfather I ever knew... My grandmother owned a dress shop in Hico for many years... It was called "Bess Mingus Dress Shop" Anyone here of it? :) My mother Alta Doris Cunningham was born in Black Stump Valley between Hico and Chalk Mountain... She went to school in Duffau and has always gone by Doris. I am living in Houston right now.. I moved here when I married my wife Terri, 3 years ago... I have a step son named Joshua who is 8... I work at NASA as a Senior Systems Engineer...

    3. There never was a Stephensville- sometime during the organization it was printed that way in a local newspaper or official letter. It was not named for a Stephens Family, but a Stephen Family. Three of the Stephen brothers moved north, one to Stephenville, one to Panther Cave at Chalk Mountain overlooking Somerville County, and I think the third one lived in Meridian at one time. If you look up anything in the Geneaology libraries. most info refers to Stephenville. No reflection meant, I thought I made a mistake one time, but I was wrong, Ha! 3. Now , back to Mary Jane Buffington, a Princess in the Cherokee Natoin of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. with Georgia Indian and Anglo roots- taken from a chart sent me by Sidney McNair , Tahlequah, Ok. and drawn by his brother in Fort Worth, Robert Fletcher Wyly#2. robert F. was the son of William Clark Wyly of Tyler, Texas, a Capt. in Confederate Army, and Georgia born, the great grandson of Col.& Gov. John Sevier of TennesseeHis first wife was Mary Williams. Their children were Oliver Cromwell (Bud) Wyly and Florence. Robert F. and Mary Jane Buffington married in Mayseville, Arkansas, Cherokee nationat one time. Mary Jane Buffington, his second wife was born1840'sto Joshua Buffington and Saber Lynch who married 1830. Children of Robert F. and Mary Jane , Percy, Robert Lee, Julia, Capitola, Albert Sidney, Marmaduke, and Zoe Aster. Percy was the Regional FBI supervisor under J. Edgar Hoover who supervised the integration of Mississippi and was chief of security of Albequerque schools and Sandia Corp. until death. His son is an attorney there now. Cora McNair was born to Dr. Felix Hurd McNair and Nannie Sarah Bushy. Her father was Jesse Bushyhead, about 1/2 Cherokee, a Baptist who was arrested and put in Camp Hetzel , Georgia for removal to the Indian territory when cold weather approached. During the warm months in prison he and Cousin John Foreman became ministers, cut pole bleachers, and held daily Bible studies. Their Anglo guards were not as interested in the Bible as they were. Jesse's mom was Eliza Wilkerson. His dad was OO-OO-Du-tu, Cherokee for Bushyhead. His wife was Nannie Foreman His dad was Capt. John Stuart of Rev. War and married Susannah Emory, . She was 1/4 Cheroke , a Divine of unusual Spiritualability (A beloved Woman, like Nancy Ward of Echota, blue Peace City of Refuge in Georgia??0) Her first husband was Richard Fields and there was a third. Now back to Mary Jane- Joshua was the son of Thomas Buffington and Mary Emory, who was also the sister to Susannah Emory who married Gen. Joseph Martin , Indian Agent. Will get back to him. Mary daniel wasthe daughter of Marmaduke Daniel and Nannie Still, half Cherokee. Sabra Lynch was the dau. of Jeter Lynch and Nannie Martin, married 1799. Nannie's mom was Susannah Emory wife of Gen Joseph Martin, above. According to the Trail of Tears book and Cherokee Sunset books, Gen. Martin had 2 Anglo wives, oneSusannah Geaves, the sister of Col. Ben Cleveland's wife Mary, who I am descended from.Col. Ben fought 50 Indian and British Battles in 1770-90's and never lost one, but the one when eh and Daniel Boone were bear hunting near Cumberland Gap without dogs for Indians to smell and hear. Some Indians jumpped them and took their clothes and shoes and let them walk home alone. I call that a draw- they lived. Gen Martin also had 3 Cherokee Wives. He told one of his Anglo wives he would be killed by a hothead native without family ties to them. One was Nancy Ward's daughter. Nancy's first husband was Mankiller Gen Martin was also the son in law of Jesse Walton who left the Traveller's Rest Inn unfinished for the Georgia Gold Fields. Gen. Martin sold the property to my ancestor Ga. Militia General James Rutherford Wyly, about 1812, and Wylys sold it to the Lucas and Jarrett families about 1850. The Georgia Dept of Natural Resources runs it now as a museum park They sella book called Traveller's Rest & Tugaloo Crossroads" or get it at your library. Gen Martin's parents were Joseph Martin and Susannah Childs. Some Texas Darnells are descended from Jesse Bushyhead . Hope I have all Martins correct- I checked 3 sources. Take care, Charles Wyly William Buffington Wyly married Cora McNair in 1901 and they had Lucien, R.F. and Sid. 3. Hi, guess you knew that Sam Houston was soberred up by his Tennessee childhood froend John Jolly in Arkansas and his friends. John Jolly and the Copelands, Careys, Stones, and German Hipp families from South Carolina and Tennessee could all pass for Anglo, but some had Indian blood from 1800 and before in The Carolinas and Georgia and east Tennessee and North Georgia. This group sided with their blood kin against the British. Nancy Ward, for example, became the beloved Woman- leader of Woman's Council which trained the next chief at Chota or Old Echota. , the Blue Peace city of Refuge of 3000 who allowed polygamy and welcomed all refugees of all races and tribes. If you behaved, you became a blood brother. This group sent their kin and friends in North Georgia 300 dogs once to save them from starving during a drought. When she sent cows, her son in law Gen. Joseph Martin took them back. he was an ancestor of Mary Jane Buffington- he from Toccoa Ga. area- he sold the Traveller's Rest Inn to Gen. James Rutherford Wyly. His first wife was a Graves, who was sister to Col. Ben Cleveland og Ga. & King's Mountain. Wylys sold out to The Jarrett- Lucas families. It is now a Georgia State Park where Clemson and other college hold blacksmith demonstrations. The Blackburn Mill was built by Blackburns on War Eagle River south of Eureka Springs before the Trail of Tears ended and still runs. Those on the trail were shocked to find the Ozarks west of the Miss. settled by Anglo appearing peoplewith their names on the Gov. Indian rolls. A Dallas City library worker told us the Arkansas Indian Background before there was an Oklahoma border. He held a Geneaology workshop here in Bellmead recently. Andrew Jackson had 3 major reasons not ususlly in books, to force the final removal. 1. The Blue Peace cities of Refuge of Echota and Etowa, Tennessee. It was an escape from Anglo law. Jackson orderred Col. Sevier and his Gillespie- Jack- Mcallie-& others to burn Etowa and scatter the ashes. Their guide and interpreter James Carey may been part of Daniel Boones Longhunters, including Stones, . Can some Longhunter researcher contact me on this. My Careys and Stones were there and in Arkansas with the Batemans when it was questionable if they were in organized U.S. territory at times. Many were in the territory of the Louisiana Purchase north of Arkansas before the purchase was done. Our books usually called them Mountain men. The Trappers at Annual Rundeveaus (SP) were not all French. If Jackson's plan worked, why are there so many Red Headed freckled faced Cherokees on the Eastern reservationand their outdoor pageant between Gatlainburg and Hiawasse Ga. at Cherokee, N.C.?? The Buffingtons of Bruceville- Eddy McLennan County. had records of Cherokee and Anglo ancestors, including Mary Jane, when I substituted after retirement. Will send names from Buffingtons to Martins and Capt. John Stuart, 1700s.Linda Darnell, movie star, was part Cherokee from this line. 3. Charles, A Belinda Redwine married into my Jarrett family in 1835 in Jackson Co.,Georgia. She died in Arkansas in 1861. I also have a Cunningham who married a McCluskey (relation to me know confirmed, but suspected). My McCleskeys and another group of McCleskeys (possibly related) settled in Erath County. Mine came in 1870 and settled near Patillo. My McCleskeys are also descended from Howell Jarrett of Wilkes Co., Georgia. I am also interesting in more information about Mary Jane Buffington for two reasons. Pickens Lafayette Buffington married Zemily Isabella Wood, daughter of Lorenzo Dow Wood and Isabella Rhea McCleskey, in Georgia. It is also possible that I am descended from Thomas Gordon and Mary Buffington of Gwinnett Co., GA. If there is a Native American connection there, I would really like to know about it. You said, "Anyone in Arkansas, Missouri, and East Oklahoma before 1900 either had Cherokee blood or kin who had married Cherokee..." What proof do you have of that statement? My mother had family in Washington Co., Arkansas prior to the War of Northern Agression. Margaret McCleskey, Arlington, TX Charles A. 3. Hi, Don't know the connection, but the Mary laneys caught my attention. In 1952 , when I returned from the Army, I used toattend parties in Chalk Mountain. Since I was known to everyone I and Bill Riggs were appointed chaperones for a hayride trip, Mary and Claudia Laneys were teenagers and were all State basketball players at Stephenville High School, which won State that year. Mary and Claudia were grandchildren of Ben and Ruth Laney, mom's friends. One of their sons, Jiggs Laney and wife, an Edwards, lived in Skipper's Gap on U.S.67, not far west of the Maratheal's Gap (Greasy) School. They adopted 2 children. If they were still trying to follow the Scottish- Anglo European of picking names, then the Mary above may be a granddaughter or great granddaughter of the Mary you listed. Let me know if you do not have the naming pattern based on older kin. Also, The National Indian records are kept in a Federal library in Fort Worth, Texas. I ran the Cherokee Rolls in the Waco city library and found some of my kin in Arkansas in 1900 with 1/64/or less blood. One Wyly married Mary Jane Buffington , aGeorgia born princess descended from several generations of mixed blood. One was on Tahlequah Tribal Council and ran Cherokee orphanage in 1900. His grandson is on the net with Wyly- Connor Real Estate in Tahlequah. Anyone in Arkansas , Missouri, and East Oklahoma before 1900 either had Cherokee blood or kin who had married Cherokee and they knew who would sell them land. Many in Erath County had various Indian blood but were not about to talk to strangers about it as long as John R. Baylor and his semi official- semi vigilante Central Texas Rangers were "purging" the Palo Pinto- Erath Caddo and other peaceful Indian Farmers. He closed their farms, sent them to Fort Phantom Hill, then informed the U.S.Army commander there that his Rangers outnumberred his troops and if he did not ship all Indians to Oklahoma they would kill him , his troops, and the Indians. Mr. Baylor was next the first Governor of the State of Arizona. Rev. R.E.B. Baylor who started Baylor University in 1845 was 25 years or more ahead of John R. Baylor, whom Col. Buck Barry, Texas Ranger, had commissioned part time to lead posses seeking killers. The Caddo were friendly and kept Comanches out of Erath County for many years before the civil War. 3. Yes, there is still a masonic lodge here in Stephenville. We tried calling them, but don't get an answer today. This is a number from the 1998-99 phone book, and the building with the masonic symbol is still standing, so we assume that they still meet. Masonic Lodge 244 S. 3. Hi, I knew Tom Laney and family of Erath County, also Ben Laney & his family. Ben and Ruth were close friends of mom and dad in their older years. Tom was paralyzed for some reason and scooted around town on Saturday and trades days with a cup of pencils and razor blades, selling them from he sat on with one leg under him & pushed it with a walking cane. The Kiwanis gave him a gasoline 3 wheel scooter similar to our electric carts today. Some "Friends" offerred to take him home. They didn't they put him out on the Fort Worth Highway. He started home and a car hit him from behind. Tommy, his son was a hard working young man. He secured a position as a maintenance man at Tarleton State and pastored a Baptist church in Stephenville. I saw his sister last week visiting Mutt and Dorothy Suitt. Where are you? My great Great Great grandfather Rev. B.T.Stevens from Chipley (Pine Mountain) (Calloway Gardens Country) ,Georgia is buried at Selden (Hatchett) Cemetery on the Duffau Creek by two daughters who married Dr. & Rev. Hatchett. He ordained his son in law and or 2 of his brothers as Missionary Baptist ministers. The were Texas Ranger scouts for Taylor in the War with Mexico, 1845. Dr. Hatchett was a Doctor, minister, and pharmacist and land speculator. Family "stories" say he was but I have found nothing to support this. I have found that he was a postmaster in Victor, TX about 1864? Charles thank you for the historical info. Thanks to all of you who have helped the rest of us. Annette, in AZ

    3. Hi, Fred , and welcome. You and I have overlapping memories, but yours are brobably more detailed east of Lone Mountain than mine- mine links back to Indian Creek and Hico as well as Glen Rose and Huckaby. By the way, I have photos of the mountains with almost no cedars and climbers in wool suits and Tarleton uniforms climbing Lone Mountain and did have one of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Surveu tower used in WW2 for aircraft spotters. The next tower west was near Alfred Scrimsher's syrup mill, south of Tom Arendell log cabin. It was standing 1942-44 when I attended Selden school after Johnsville. Concerning WYCHE- Dr. Allen G. Wyche was a Chiropractor. Not sure about a Stephenville office, but I think he was the one in Dublin my parents attended before they quit driving. Didn't know the rest of his family. Bill Bradley was a Superintendent of Schools. Seems it was Iredell The name sounds familiar inconnection with Oglesby and Gatesville schools. So, There should be Bradley records in Meridian and Gatesville. Concerning Alexander, I attended high school with several Alexanders- guess you did too. One was "Col. Bob" , Stephenville football player. In case you missed Grady Wyly at Stephenville Country Opry recently, He left the dairy and was hauling Frito scrap from Dallas to McAllen for a Mexican feed lot and had a triple bypass surgery in McAllen a week or so ago and has now returned to his home by his son's dairy at the entrance to the Selden (Hatchett) cemetery. Moral? Don't eat Frito scrap? 3. Hi, who was your ancestor that was Erath County sheriff? I can probably find him in H. Grady Perry's GRAND OLD ERATH or Homer Stephen's FRONTIER POSTMASTERS. aLSO, if he was a Roberts, I have several boxes of records from Mattie Roberts Somerville of West Monroe, La. which give Roberts tracks from the east coast to California. Mattie, a certified Geneaologist and officer in the Natchitoches, La. Chapter of DAR is also a Wylly descendant, but I may not have time for a detailed research until the Wyly Reunion is finished , after August 1 st. She had 20 plus boxes of research passed on to me after her passing away by Bill Somerville, her Husband. Thanks, Bill. To my knowledge I am not a Roberts descendant- as Mattie was. Carl W. Turnbow , sheriff in 1940's was related to the Roberts family and Martin families by marriage and other links. Blackie Martin was Carl's deputy before he became sheriff. Take care, you may be kin to Billy the Kid if this is the line you are seeking. Mattie was.
